What are we all waiting for in our own lives? I think that’s the takeaway for me from Waiting for Godot at the Guthrie Theater. This magnificent play, written by Samuel Beckett and directed by Joseph Haj, will only be on stage until October 11. Haj commented that "Beckett’s search for meaning in a broken world is a large part of why the play continues to resonate with global audiences."
Written after World War II, but highly relevant today, the Guthrie’s production has powerhouse actors – David Strathairn as Vladimir and Jimmy Kieffer as Estragon, along with William Sturdivant as Pozzo, Jim Lichtscheidl as Lucky and Antonio Teodoro as the boy. Valdimir and Estragon wait day after endless day for the arrival of Godot. Their repetitive dialogue reinforces the play’s absurdist and existential themes. The repetitive dialogue seems to me to mirror today’s news organizations asking the same questions of politicians – over and over – and endless analysis of what was meant by the non-answers.
