Minnesota Bach Ensemble Announces 2019-2020 Opening Concert for its 8th Season

MBE welcomes new Artistic Director Mischa Santora!

After seven successful seasons under the expert leadership of Andrew Altenbach, Minnesota Bach Ensemble (MBE) is opening a new chapter of its exploration and performance of the works of J.S. Bach, his sons and contemporaries. Mr. Santora comes to MBE after an exhaustive search for a conductor both knowledgeable and experienced in baroque music and possessing the considerable technical skills needed for this challenging and often tricky repertoire. He also brings a warm and collaborative conducting style.

The October 26 and 28 program features J.S. Bach and his family. J.S. Bach’s sons respected and revered their father, but ultimately rejected his complex style of composition. Their search for new paths forward is one of the most exciting (and rarely told) stories in music history. Linh Kauffman (soprano), Philip Zawisza (baritone), and Adam Kuenzel (flute) are the featured soloists in this celebratory season opener.

Mayor Frey and Eleven Team Break Ground on $190 Million Project

The ceremony, which took place on the Eleven site in front of a 30-foot visual of building, included from left to right, Brian Murray, CEO of Ryan Companies, Carl Runck, Director of Real Estate Development for Ryan Companies, Luigi Bernadi, CEO Arcadia Management LLC, Dave Weinberger, CFO Arcadia Management LLC, Mike Ryan, President North Region Ryan Companies and Paul Whalen, Partner at RAMSA.Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and the team from Eleven, Minneapolis’ first luxury condominium project, recently broke ground on construction for the $190 million project.

Eleven is the first residential project in the city to be designed by Robert A.M. Stern (RAMSA), based in New York City.  Luigi Bernardi of Arcadia LLC is serving as the project sponsor and co-developer and Ryan Companies is serving as co-developer, builder and is partnering with RAMSA as the architect. 

The 550-foot, 41-story Eleven tower will be Minneapolis’ tallest residential building.

Soon to be the premier address in the Mill District, Eleven will typically have four units per floor, transitioning to two units per floor, and finally one unit per floor in the upper portion of the building. Each home includes a large private terrace which is at least 14 x 14 feet.  RAMSA, Ryan, and local firms Peterssen/Keller Architects and Martha Dayton Design and Sotheby’s International Realty have ensured the building interior is as thoughtful as its exterior.

Amenities include a large landscaped terrace that will be unlike any other in the city including a 75-foot lap pool, a private motor court, a 24/7 doorman, an expansive fitness suite, a multi-sport court, a library, a golf simulator, a children’s splash pad, retail space (ideally for a restaurant), a demonstration kitchen with dining, residential and guest parking, storage, and more. City Closing Streets Around Target Center in Preparation for President Trump’s Rally at Target Center

Via an October 8 e-announcement from the City of Minneapolis:

The City is planning limited street closures around Target Center ahead of President Trump’s political rally in Target Center Thursday evening. 

Beginning 8 p.m. Wednesday, the following streets will be closed around Target Center:

• First Avenue North from Sixth Street North to Eighth Street North.
• Second Avenue North from Fifth Street North to 10th Street North.
• Sixth Street North between First Avenue North and Second Avenue North.
• Seventh Street North between Hennepin Avenue and 10th Street North; access to parking ramp will be provided.
• Twins Way between Seventh Street North and 10th Street North.

Interstate 394 to/from downtown access changes:

• Exit ramp to Sixth Street North will close 8 p.m. Wednesday.
• HOV entrance ramp at Third Avenue North and Fifth Street North will close 8 p.m. Wednesday.
• Access to Ramps A and B will close 9 a.m. Thursday. Ramps A and B may be accessed from local streets.

Minneapolis managed parking ramp facilities will be open for parking until full, including the ABC Ramps. On-street parking will be restricted in some areas of downtown to facilitate traffic operations.

Metro Transit expects to have regular service with detours as needed due to street closures. Riders from affected routes who are subscribed to receive alerts will see them Wednesday morning. Riders are also encouraged to stay tuned to Metro Transit’s social media channels for real time updates.

Shared scooters will not be available in Minneapolis on Thursday. Nice Rice stations and dockless hubs will also be out of service in the area near Target Center. Normal operations will resume Friday.

The City of Minneapolis has worked closely with other government agencies and partners on a traffic management plan to minimize disruption to traffic and parking as much as possible. Traffic conditions will be dynamic Thursday with the potential for increasing congestion by the end of the day. Traffic control agents will be coordinating traffic flow between buses, cars and pedestrians. Please follow their directions to make sure everyone gets in and out of downtown safely.

Fall Street Sweeping Begins Tuesday, October 22

Crews are preparing to sweep streets across Minneapolis before winter, keeping leaves and debris out of the storm drains and ending up in our lakes and rivers as much as possible.

Minneapolis Public Works will begin street sweeping on Tuesday, October 22.

Temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted at least 24 hours in advance so streets will be clear of cars when they’re swept. Anyone who parks on the street will need to follow posted parking rules or their cars may be ticketed and towed.

Ways to stay informed of the parking rules:

• “No Parking” signs – City crews will post “No Parking” signs at least 24 hours before sweeping any streets. Parking will be banned from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the day a street is swept. However, the “No Parking” signs will be removed as soon as possible after a street has been completely swept to allow people to resume parking after the signs are removed.
• Social media – The City will use Facebook and Twitter to post periodic street sweeping updates and information.
• Interactive web feature – You can use the City’s website to find out when the sweepers are coming through your neighborhood. Reference the website once we get closer to the start date. The fall street sweep takes four weeks, and visitors to the website will be able to find out which week their street is scheduled to be swept. Then, on the weekend before each of the four weeks, the schedule for the upcoming week will be broken down to show which day of the week streets are scheduled to be swept.

"Kulture Klub Presents" in Hennepin Gallery through December 30

Youth and mentors from Kulture Klub Collaborative (KKC) express their voices through art in Kulture Klub Presents, which focuses on the strengths and contributions of homeless youth. KKC provides access to the arts and artistic practice to youth ages 16-24 who are experiencing, transitioning out of, or at-risk of homelessness.

Visitors to the Hennepin Gallery will gain access to the unique perspectives of KKC youth, who are frequent visitors to the Government Center mostly for difficult legal and county assistance matters.

The exhibit will highlight work from the following five recent KKC projects, interspersed with paintings of participants creating the displayed art:

• This Is Our Downtown – Letterpress posters and framed digital photography of the people and spaces that make up downtown Minneapolis.
• Highpoint Center for Printmaking – Prints created during a three-month class that focused on a different technique each week.
• Weaving and Healing – Gratitude mirrors created during facilitated workshops.
• Northern Clay Center – Hand-built ceramic pieces from a series at the regional ceramic art center.
• Aerosol Mural – Portable mural painted on individual 16” x 20” canvases.

The Hennepin Gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Hennepin County Government Center, A-Level, 300 S. Sixth St., Minneapolis.

Exhibit background

This exhibition and corresponding events are supported by the Hennepin County Multicultural Arts Committee (MCAC). MCAC was created by the County Board in 1995 as part of the organization’s response to the Minneapolis Initiative Against Racism. MCAC sponsors art displays, performances, discussions and exhibits representing Hennepin County’s diverse cultural canvas.

For this exhibition and corresponding events, MCAC is receiving support from Forecast Public Art, a non-profit arts organization that activates people, networks and proven practices to advance the transformational power of arts in public life.

Founded in 1992, KKC provides access to the arts and artistic practice to youth ages 16-24 who are experiencing, transitioning out of, or at-risk of homelessness. KKC also focuses on creating opportunities for teaching artists to connect with this unique youth community and develop their skills and craft in a supported setting. Over 300 youth a year engage with KKC’s programs. KKC is community-minded and artist-led. 

KKC partners closely with YouthLink, and is based at their drop-in center in downtown Minneapolis. Youth get their basic needs met and connect with support staff who help them to reach their individual goals and move towards independence and stability.

Downtown real estate market update from Cynthia Froid Group:

Downtown Section of West River Parkway to Close Completely Beginning October 14

Via an October 4 announcement from the Minneapolis Park & Rec Board

Section of parkway already closed during weekdays will also close on nights and weekends beginning Oct. 14

West River Parkway will completely close between Fourth Avenue North and the parking lot for the Stone Arch Bridge, just west of Portland Avenue, beginning Monday, Oct. 14, 2019. The closure is expected to last for about a month. The Stone Arch Bridge parking lot will also likely close for a shorter period during this time.

This section of the parkway is already closed during weekdays, but it reopens on nights and weekends. The upcoming full closure is due to work ramping up on Water Works, a new riverfront park project currently under construction.

The adjacent bike/walk trails will remain open during this time. The parkway will reopen periodically for short periods throughout the fall to accommodate previously scheduled special events.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board appreciates everyone's patience while Water Works is constructed.

MacPhail Spotlight Series Showcases Minnesota’s Best Musicians

Local Musicians, MacPhail’s jazz faculty highlighted in 2019-20 season

MacPhail Center for Music announces the seventh season of their premier concert series, the MacPhail Spotlight Series, under the direction of Mischa Santora. The lineup highlights Minnesota musicians and stories, MacPhail’s jazz faculty and the stunning place of worship that is the Basilica of Saint Mary.

“MacPhail’s top-notch musicians never fail to amaze me, and it is such an honor to collaborate with them on a wide range of concepts,” says Mischa Santora, artistic director. “This season we’ll celebrate local artists and their stories, showcase MacPhail’s all-star jazz faculty, sonically explore the Basilica and honor the genius of Beethoven. The 2019-2020 season features:

• October 18, 2019: Roaring Twenties (Paramount Theater, Austin, Minnesota): Hear iconic songs like “Honeysuckle Rose,” “Sweet Sue,” and “Ain’t We Got Fun” alongside instrumental selections, as this program takes you back to America’s most transformative and mythical era.
• November 16, 2019: Locally Sourced (Antonello Hall): The great state of Minnesota boasts a vibrant arts scene, and MacPhail is proud to present some of the finest, including our very own faculty. Gregory Theisen, Fred and J.D. Steele and guest Libby Larsen will perform some of their own creations alongside a few covers by Minnesota legend, Prince!
• February 8, 2020: The World Through Jazz (Antonello Hall): Curated by Christopher Rochester, newly appointed Jazz Coordinator at MacPhail, this program explores jazz and how it travels through various parts of our planet. Experience the stark differences, but also similarities, between Bossa Nova, Afro Cuban, Flamenco, Reggae, Irish music and more.
• February 13, 2020: Reverberations (Basilica of Saint Mary): Exploring the aspects of space, time, and music, alongside the spirituality evoked by the majestic columns, cavernous ceiling, and dignified statues of the Basilica of Saint Mary, artistic director Mischa Santora composed a piece based on poems by Eliot, Rilke and Merwin. It is intended as a tribute to both the beauty of the building as well as the Basilica’s mission of inclusion, equity, social justice and environmental consciousness.
• April 4, 2020: Anatomy of Genius (Antonello Hall): Celebrating Beethoven’s 250th anniversary, we perform three major pieces from this musical genius. The concert highlights Beethoven’s musical intricacies and stylistic evolution over the course of his life, interspersed with Beethoven’s highly personal letters and contemporary accounts of his performances.

Tickets for concerts held at Antonello Hall are $25 for adults, $15 for seniors (ages 55 and older) and youth (ages 6 through 18). Basilica of Saint Mary concert tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for MacPhail students; both may be purchased by calling 612-767-5250 or by stopping by Student Services at MacPhail locations in Minneapolis, Chanhassen, Apple Valley or White Bear Lake. Friends of the Mill District Announces Mill City Dance

Friends of the Mill District (FOMD) is excited to announce the first ever Mill City Dance. We are partnering with the Heart of Dance and Abiitan Mill City in the launch of a 10-week session of dance classes featuring a variety of dance types, including ballroom. The session will begin on Thursday, October 10th, 12:30 pm to 2 pm. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Abiitan Terraces (2nd floor of Abiitan). Guests will need to check in with the concierge in the lobby and will then be directed to the 2nd floor.

No partner is necessary. Come as you are, single or with a partner. Mill City Dance is sponsored by the Friends of the Mill District and in keeping with our mission, will be free and open to all. Programming expenses are paid by FOMD.

The Hungarian Film and Cultural Festival 2019 @ MSP Film Society October 18-19

The Hungarian Film and Cultural Festival 2019 is presented by Creative Cultural Exchange and MSP Film Society. The festival will take place on October 18 and 19 at St. Anthony Main Theatre, 115 SE Main Street.

A celebration of Hungarian culture and history through the lens of five popular Hungarian films. After the final film, the MSP Film Society will host a cultural festival and reception to give you a further taste of Hungarian culture and commemorate the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.

All films will be shown on the Film Society Screen #3 at St. Anthony Main Theatre, and the cultural festival will take place on the 3rd floor above the theater.

Prices: $8 regular, $6 student, $5 MSP Film Society members

Sixth Annual Twin Cities Startup Week Announces Schedule of Events

The sixth-annual Twin Cities Startup Week (TCSW), the nation’s second-largest startup week featuring talented entrepreneurs and individuals from the startup capital of the north, has announced their 2019 schedule of events and opened ticket registration. Prominent startup leaders and notable figures, including St. Paul Mayor Melvin Cater, Target Vice President of Innovation Gene Han, Loup Ventures Managing Partner and Cofounder Gene Munster, Inc. Staff Writer Emily Canal, Geekettes Founder and Facebook Diversity Specialist Jess Erickson and other soon-to-be-announced enterprise pioneers, will headline almost 250 events throughout the week-long phenomenon from Wednesday, October 9 to Wednesday, October 16.

Earlier this year, Beta.MN, organizers of TCSW, named Casey Shultz as the Director of TCSW, the first woman to spearhead the event. This year’s event will also introduce three industry-focused tracks and three partner events, including:

Be a Friend of the Mill District

As many of you may know, the Friends of the Mill District is a small, neighborhood charity. Our mission is to connect all people in the Mill District neighborhood and surrounding areas. How do we do that? We hire some of the very finest artists in the metropolitan area to lead groups that we have founded and manage.  The Mill City Singers, Mill City Yoga, and Mill City Players are three such groups. Each of them is free and open to all, which is another part of the mission of the Friends. If we are going to be open to all people, we must make sure that a ‘membership fee’ is not an impediment. We work very hard to make sure that every segment of the population in our community knows they are welcome and feels welcome when they join us. Our mantra is that we are ‘stronger together’ and we have learned the truth of that statement through the growth of each of our groups.

Obviously, the work that we do, can only be done because of a loyal group of contributors who believe in the work we are doing. We are so very grateful to each and every one of them and love the work. It does require money to pay the salaries of our amazing artists who include J.D. Steele, Fred Steele, Laurie Omodt-Tebrake, James A. Williams, Patricia Brown, Ahanti Young, and soon to include Ember Reichgott-Junge and Andrea Mirenda. 100% of the donations are used to pay our artists. All other work is done on a volunteer basis.

The Steeles

On October 17th, the Friends will be holding their first fundraiser, starring the Steele Family in their only appearance in the Mill District this year. We are honored to be hosting this amazing group and hope you will be able to attend. The evening will begin at 6:00 at the Mill City Museum with Taste of the Mill District, which will feature donated appetizers from many of the restaurants in our community, along with a cash bar. At 7:00 the Steeles will take the stage. If you have had the honor of seeing them in concert, you know what to expect. If you have missed them, buckle up, it will be an evening of rollicking music, amazing joy, great laughs, and an evening of community. Tickets are available at Eventbrite.com. Hennepin Avenue Downtown Reconstruction Project Update

Hennepin Avenue Downtown Reconstruction Project

Hennepin Ave. reconstruction project, led by City of Minneapolis Public Works, will be reconstructed between 12th Street and Washington Avenue beginning Spring 2019.  The project will reconstruct the pavement from building face to building face, including improvements to public and private utility infrastructure, and improved infrastructure for pedestrians, bicycles, transit, and vehicles.

Utility work continues along the project corridor.  Primary scopes of work will continue to be Xcel Energy, CenterPoint Energy, and the Sanitary Sewer work.

What's Coming Up 

The Sanitary work is progressing toward 11th St over the next couple weeks and is finishing up the work at 9th by the end of the month.  Xcel is progressing toward 4th Street and CenterPoint will be jumping over toward Washington. 

No closures planned over the next two weeks.

MCBA Announces "New Editions” - Celebrating More Than 50 Local and International Book Artists

New Editions Celebrates More Than 50 Local and International Book Artists 

Minnesota Center for Book Arts hosts two-day showcase of all-new book art, including a public sale and book arts-themed Story Slam

As a hub for artists of all kinds—bookbinders, papermakers, letterpress printers, and more—Minnesota Center for Book Arts has devoted two days solely to the celebration of new book art created within the last year. The event kicks off on Friday, October 18, 7-10pm with a ticketed preview party, followed by a juried public sale on Saturday, October 19, 10am-3pm. 

“This year’s selection of work is fresh, fun, and really speaks to the depth and breadth of what book art can be. We love being able to showcase such a variety of artists and the various contemporary processes and themes artists are incorporating into their work,” says Torey Erin, Exhibitions and Artist Programs Manager.

“You’ll see examples of letterpress printing, bookbinding, paper making, zine making, marbling, calligraphy, typography, origami, collage, and more. This is a great event for members of the public who are new to the book arts and want to support our artist community, as well as for longtime arts lovers who want to add new work to their collection,” says Executive Director Elysa Voshell.

The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis is in the Running for a Partners in Preservation: Main Streets Grant

The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis, 410 Oak Grove Street 

American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in collaboration with Main Street America, announced today that their annual Partners in Preservation campaign this year will shine a light on historic buildings and sites celebrating the contributions of women in local communities across the country.

In honor of the upcoming 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote, the Partners in Preservation program will feature 20 sites that each play a role in highlighting and raising awareness for the often unrecognized contributions of women to American history and society.  From the home of Colorado’s first female African American doctor in Denver, to famed author Harper Lee’s hometown courthouse in Monroeville, Alabama, these sites celebrate the triumphs, struggles and rich history of women in America.

Beginning today through October 29, anyone can vote for their favorite Partners in Preservation: Main Streets at VoteYourMainStreet.org. The voting platform is hosted by media partner National Geographic, and Delta Air Lines is also joining as a campaign sponsor for the third year in a row. People can cast up to five votes each day of the campaign. The historic sites with the most votes will receive a share of $2 million in preservation funding from American Express, and each local partner is receiving an initial grant of $10,000 to increase public awareness of the importance of these historic places and build grassroots support for their Main Street district. Winning districts will be announced on October 30.

Included in the 20 sites vying for Partners in Preservation: Main Streets grants is The Woman's Club of Minneapolis

The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis was founded by women, for women, as a place to gather and engage in educational opportunities, civic contributions, and friendly association. The Club’s auditorium has historically hosted diverse forms of theatrical practice and public engagement, and currently fills a vital need in the Twin Cities arts community by providing a safe and accessible performance space for independent artists.

This space, formally called The Assembly, needs updates and upgrades to better serve the community. Funding will help replace the seats and repair the damaged floor—a critical first phase of a three-phase renovation.

Eleven Closes on Financing from Industry Leaders

Largest Condominium Lenders, Related Fund Management and Bank OZK Back Eleven

Ground breaking is scheduled for October 7 

Eleven, Minneapolis’ first luxury condominium project designed by a world-renowned architect, has closed on $188.5 million in financing from the industry’s leading lenders; Related Fund Management as the mezzanine lender and Bank OZK as the senior lender.

Dougherty Funding LLC, whose team is led by Executive Vice President Murray Kornberg, arranged Eleven’s financing with the two largest condominium construction lenders in the country. Eleven’s financing represents the largest construction loan ever secured for a condominium project in the state of Minnesota. 

“Having two of the industry’s leading capital providers approve the largest loan ever for a ground up multi-family project in the state is a testament to the vitality of this project,” Kornberg said. “The participation of these lenders in this project is a significant endorsement of Eleven and is consistent with the response we are currently seeing from buyers and the community at large.”

Eleven will be the first residential project in the city to be designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA), based in New York City. Luigi Bernardi of Arcadia LLC is serving as the project sponsor and co-developer and Ryan Companies is serving as co-developer, builder, and is partnering with RAMSA as the architect. 

The 550-foot, 41-story Eleven tower will be Minneapolis’ tallest residential building. Local firms Peterssen/Keller Architects and Martha Dayton Design and Lakes Sotheby’s International Realty are also part of the Eleven team that is ensuring the building’s interior is as thoughtful as its exterior.

Amenities include a large landscaped terrace, a 25-yard lap pool, a private motor court, a 24/7 doorman an expansive fitness suite and yoga studio, a multi-sport court, a library, a golf simulator, a children’s splash pad, a demonstration kitchen with dining, residential and guest parking, a retail space for a restaurant, and more. 

This is the first foray into the Minneapolis marketplace for Related Fund Management’s credit platform.
