Time: 7:00pm-9:00pm

Location: Truckstop Gallery, 20 Grove St. #72, Nicollet Island

Hold Fast Opening Reception

Truckstop Gallery presents St. Olaf’s 5th Year Emerging Artists Program, April 27 – May 17

Hold Fast features St. Olaf’s four emerging artists of 2018:

Artists Cailan Carpenter, Josh Torkelson, Holland Hardie, and Evan Weselmann

Cailan Carpenter is a ceramic artist whose work blurs the lines between functional pots and sculpture.  Josh Torkelson is a multi-media artist who explores the lines between permanence and the ephemeral in both two and three dimensions.  Holland Hardie creates layered prints focusing on outdoor patterns, both natural and human made.  Using bright colors and a large-scale Evan Weselmann’s paintings encourage viewers to contemplate deeper than the surface.

Trucksotp Gallery proudly supports St. Olaf’s Fifth Year Emerging Artists program, more information can be found at https://wp.stolaf.edu/art/5thyear/.  Trucksotp Gallery is an art gallery created by artists, for artists. April 26, 2018, Thursday - Hennepin Avenue Reconstruction Project Open House

Time: 4:00-6:00pm (no presentation; come and go at any time, children’s activities available)

Location: Hennepin Theatre Trust, 900 Hennepin Avenue

Please join us on Thursday, April 26 for an open house to learn more about the Hennepin Avenue Reconstruction Project.

The City of Minneapolis is advancing planning and design of Hennepin Avenue between Washington Avenue and 12th Street. Considerations include accommodations for multiple travel modes within the existing right-of-way, including sidewalks with space for plantings and furnishings, one-way bikeways behind the curb, space for enhanced transit stops compatible with future Arterial Bus Rapid Transit service, and the retention of four vehicle lanes for the length of the Hennepin Avenue project area. A roadway layout will be presented to the Minneapolis City Council for approval in July 2018.

At the open house, the project team will be updating the public on the design process and next steps, including how previous public input has been considered. A layout with specific dimensions will be available for review. You will also be able to comment on options for an overall aesthetic vision for the larger corridor between the Walker Art Center and the Mississippi River. We hope to see you there!

April 24, 2018, Tuesday - Book Launch for Susan Bartlett Foote's "The Crusade for Forgotten Souls: Reforming Minnesota's Mental Institutions, 1946-1954"

Time: 6:00 PM program; 7:00 PM Reception and book signing.

Location: Humphrey School of Public Affairs, Cowles Auditorium, 301 19th Avenue S

Book launch event for Susan Bartlett Foote's The Crusade for Forgotten Souls: Reforming Minnesota's Mental Institutions, 1946-1954

Books will be available for purchase from the University of Minnesota Bookstores. This event is brought to you by the University of Minnesota Press, the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and the School of Public Health.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
In 1940 Engla Schey, the daughter of Norwegian immigrants, took a job as a low-paid attendant at Anoka State Hospital, one of Minnesota’s seven asylums. She would work among people who were locked away under the shameful label “insane,” called inmates—and numbered more than 12,000 throughout the state. She acquired the knowledge and passion that would lead to “The Crusade for Forgotten Souls,” a campaign to reform the deplorable condition of mental institutions in Minnesota. This book chronicles that remarkable undertaking inspired and carried forward by ordinary people under the political leadership of Luther Youngdahl, a Swedish Republican who was the state’s governor from 1946 to 1951.

Susan Bartlett Foote tells the story of those who made the crusade a success: Engla Schey, the catalyst; Reverend Arthur Foote, a modest visionary who guided Unitarians to constructive advocacy; Genevieve Steefel, an inveterate patient activist; and Geri Hoffner, an intrepid reporter whose twelve-part series for the Minneapolis Tribune galvanized the public. These reformers overcame barriers of class, ethnicity, and gender to stand behind the governor, who, at a turbulent moment in Minnesota politics, challenged his own party’s resistance to reform. The Crusade for Forgotten Souls recounts how these efforts broke the stigma of shame and silence surrounding mental illness, publicized the painful truth about the state’s asylums, built support among citizens, and resulted in the first legislative steps toward a modern mental health system that catapulted Minnesota to national leadership and empowered families of the mentally ill and disabled. Though their vision met resistance, the accomplishments of these early advocates for compassionate care of the mentally ill hold many lessons that resonate to this day, as this book makes compellingly clear.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Susan Bartlett Foote
is professor emerita in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, where she was head of the Division of Health Policy and Management from 1999 to 2005. She is author of Managing the Medical Arms Race: Innovation and Public Policy in the Medical Device Industry.

Time: Doors open at 6:15:00pm; program begins at 7:00pm

Location: Central Library, Pohlad Hall, 300 Nicollet Mall

Talk of the Stacks with Alex Wagner

Alex Wagner, co-host of Showtime’s "The Circus" and a contributor to CBS News and The Atlantic, will explore race, immigration, and belonging in her new book, "Futureface". Alex will be in conversation with Minneapolis-based political columnist, culture critic, and host of "With Friends Like These" podcast, Ana Marie Cox.

As the daughter of a Burmese mother and a white American father, Alex Wagner grew up thinking of herself as a “futureface”—an avatar of a mixed-race future when all races would merge into a brown singularity. Drawn into the wild world of ancestry, she embarks upon a quest around the world—and into her own DNA—to answer the ultimate questions of who she really is and where she belongs. Wagner is anchor and correspondent for CBS News, a contributing editor at The Atlantic, and author of "Futureface: A Family Mystery, an Epic Quest, and the Secret to Belonging".

Presented by U.S. Bank and sponsored by BNSF Railway and Star Tribune, Talk of the Stacks is free and open to the public and held at Hennepin County Library - Minneapolis Central (300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis, MN 55401) in Pohlad Hall. Location: Mill City Museum, 704 South 2nd Street

Washburn A Mill Tour

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. • The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
  • Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928 and 1991
  • The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.
