April 14, 2018, Saturday - MacPhail Spotlight Series: Troubled Souls

Time: 8:00pm (7:00pm Pre-concert conversation discussing the musical direction)

Location: MacPhail Center for Music, Antonello Hall, 501 S 2nd Street

MacPhail Spotlight Series: Troubled Souls

This Spotlight concert features the foreboding sensibilities of three very different composers.

Nebojsa Zivkovic wrote Uneven Souls, a Marimba concerto complete with percussion and chorus effects. Based on Balkan culture, it’s a tribute to what the composer sees as the Slavic people’s uneven, “non-dogmatic” way of life, free of “ultimatums” or “strict rules.”

Liszt’s Totentanz (Dance of Death) evokes the terrifying sounds of Judgment Day, with its extended quote from the famous medieval chant “Dies Irae.”

Stravinsky’s masterpiece, The Soldier’s Tale, is a classic cautionary tale, complete with a Faustian bargain.

Zivkovic: Uneven Souls
Jenny Klukken, marimba; Erik Schee, David Birrow and Bob Adney, percussion; Voices of Experience directed by Jerry Rubino
Liszt: Totentanz
(arr. for two pianos, percussion and chorus by Mischa Santora)
Irina and Julia Elkina, piano; Erik Schee and David Birrow, percussion; Voices of Experience
Stravinsky: The Soldier’s Tale
Francesca Anderegg, violin; Rolf Erdahl, bass; Nina Olsen, clarinet; Jonathan Brandt, trumpet; Karl Wiederwohl, trombone; Bob Adney, percussion; Tyson Forbes, narration; Mischa Santora, conductor

Location: Le Meridien Chambers, 901 Hennepin Avenue

Phaedra Odelle Exhibit Opening

Boutique Art destination Le Meridien Chambers, 2017’s Best Hotel in Minnesota by Travel + Leisure Magazine, announces the opening of a new exhibit by Phaedra Odelle to be on display in the Le Meridien Chambers Art Gallery beginning April 14, 2018 with an Opening Celebration to commemorate its entrance.

Minneapolis artist Phaedra Odelle is drawn to natural elements in unnatural settings. Her collage work has a signature enchanted quality and juxtaposes seemingly polarized elements, creating a sense of unexpected wholeness. The artist is known for her use of doorways to express hope, potential, and power, while confronting fears of the unknown.

This exciting exhibit continues Le Meridien’s legacy of curating stimulating contemporary art from all over the world able to be enjoyed by guests and visitors free of charge. The unique merging of travel and art has caught national attention with features on The Today Show, Architectural Digest, HGTV, US News, Forbes, & Fox News, citing the bold original pieces by artists like Damien Hirst & Gary Hume that are showcased throughout the lobby and guestrooms. Le Meridien Chambers Marketing Manager Matthew Galaviz-Reed gives insight to the motivation behind the feature, “Phaedra Odelle’s pieces compel a response, it resonates deeply with the psyche and will leave a lasting impact on all who experience it. We look forward to sharing her work with Le Meridien Chambers Guests”.

Erik Rivenes Celebrates His New MNHS Press Book, “Dirty Doc Ames and the Scandal That Shook Minneapolis”

Rivenes is a writer, historian, founder of the Saint Paul Gangster Tours, and producer of the Most Notorious podcast. A cash bar with be available starting at 6 pm, and the presentation will begin at 7 pm.

The story of Albert Alonzo “Doc” Ames is perhaps the greatest political scandal in Minnesota history. As mayor of Minneapolis, Ames exposed the city to national humiliation—and helped jumpstart an era of reform. At the turn of the 20th century, Minneapolis was moving away from a time of political rings, frontier justice, and old boys’ clubs to a more civic-minded way of governing. But in 1901, the affable, degenerate Doc Ames, a former Minneapolis mayor well past his political prime, duped his way back into the office. Ames appointed his brother as chief of police, and together they assembled a rogues’ gallery of thieves to squeeze as much money out of the city as quickly as they could.

Under Ames’s leadership, criminals walked beats wearing policeman’s uniforms. City detectives robbed prominent citizens. Police maintained arrangements with madams and saloonkeepers, extracting pay for the privilege of openly ignoring the law. With a card game gone bad and a complaint to a newspaper, it all fell apart. Ames fled Minneapolis in mid-term to avoid prosecution. And at Doc Ames’s spectacular downfall, the citizens of Minneapolis finally woke up and took their city back.

Time: 8 AM - 9 AM

Location: A-Mill Artist Lofts, 315 Southeast Main Street

Morning Forum: The Minneapolis Preservation Story

Hosted by Preserve Minneapolis

A major tenet of being a preservationist is the importance of understanding our history. To that end, we thought it most appropriate to take some time and talk about the history of Preserve Minneapolis – and, for that matter, the history of preservation in Minnesota.

Join us on Wednesday, April 11th, for our next Morning Forum, where our speakers, Charlene Roise and Denis Gardner, will explore what preservation means to Minneapolis and Minnesota. They will talk about notable preservation projects and the important role they play in our unique sense of place and deep community pride.

Meet our speakers!

Charlene is a founding partner of Hess, Roise and Company, historical consultants, and became the company’s president in 1997. She has worked around the country on a broad spectrum of cultural resources ranging from bridges and aircraft hangars to high-style commercial buildings and designed landscapes. She serves on the board of The Cultural Landscape Foundation, based in Washington, D.C.

Denis P. Gardner is the National Register Historian at the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office in St. Paul, where he reviews the eligibility of properties for the National Register of Historic Places. He is the author of Minnesota Treasures: Stories Behind the State’s Historic Places (Minnesota Historical Society Press) and Wood, Concrete, Stone, and Steel: Minnesota’s Historic Bridges (University of Minnesota Press). His latest book is Our Minnesota State Capitol: From Groundbreaking Through Restoration (Minnesota Historical Society Press).

Please note our venue is at A-Mill Artist Lofts for this Morning Forum. Thank you to A-Mill and Dominium for hosting us.

This event is free to attend and does not require pre-registration.

April 10, 2018, Tuesday - The Science of Wine and Flavor at North Loop Wine and Spirits

Time: 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Location: North Loop Wine and Spirits, 218 Washington Avenue N

Twin Cities Wine Education LLC presents The Science of Wine and Taste

Time to geek out. Let's talk acids, alcohols, tannin, yeast strains, photosynthesis, fermentations, and the science of food and wine pairing.

In this new and highly interactive class, we will dive head first into the science of wine, starting with modern developments in vineyard management including canopy management, organic farming, dry farming, and more.

We then step into the winemaking itself to detail cold soak macerations, temperature controlled fermentations, the use of oak (and if chips do the same thing), and the history (and current controversy) of sulfur. We'll also have a discussion about 2,4,6-Trichloroanisole, or cork taint,... and why screw caps might be the best closure for all bottles of wine.

We will also cover the range of options a winemaker has at their disposal when it comes to yeast, and how this is crucial when it comes to the final style of the wine (and why some winemakers skip selecting their yeasts and let nature do all the work).

The last part of the class discusses the science of food and wine pairing, paying particular attention to how wines interact with sour, sweet, and fat.

Of course all of this is accompanied by great wines to help us understand the points discussed.

You can expect the extensive Twin Cities Wine Education handouts, use of top quality Riedel stemware, and an intimidation-free presentation of the information. Twin Cities Wine Education classes are a snob-free zone!

April 9, 2018, Monday - Behind the Book: Some Hell w/ Patrick Nathan & Chris Jones at Pryes Brewing

Time: 7:00 PM - 8:15 PM

Location: Pryes Brewing Company, 1401 West River Road N

Behind the Book: Some Hell w/ Patrick Nathan & Chris Jones

If it's true that everyone has a book idea in them, this wide-ranging conversation will help us understand how an author can take that idea and make it a reality. Chris Mackenzie Jones' new book Behind the Book (University of Chicago Press, 2018) traces the in-depth stories of how eleven debut authors brought their debut works into the world.

On April 9, debut novelist Patrick Nathan will join Chris to explore the story behind his new novel, Some Hell (Graywolf Press, 2018). The conversation will reflect and build on the in-depth interviews that Chris conducted to write Behind the Book. We will examine the life history behind Patrick's new book from beginning to end—including generating the idea, developing a process, building a support network, revising the manuscript, moving past setback, finding the right partners, building awareness, and ultimately, moving on to the next project. Come raise a glass, learn through example, and celebrate as two local authors go behind the book. A book signing will follow.

Presented by Graywolf Press, University of Chicago Press, and Milkweed Books.

UPDATE: the first 40 people who purchase Some Hell or Behind the Book that night will receive a complimentary beer!
