February 27: Alicia Eler & Stephanie Glaros in Conversation with Stephanie Curtis: Exploring Identity Through the Lens of Digital Media

This dynamic trio of local newsmakers explores identity through the lens of digital media, discussing authentic storytelling and building a personal brand. Alicia Eler is the visual art critic/reporter at the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the author of "The Selfie Generations: How Our Self Images Are Changing Our Notions of Privacy, Property, Sex, Consent, and Culture". Stephanie Glaros is a teaching artist, author, and speaker, best known for her blog and book, "Humans of Minneapolis". Stephanie Curtis is the Senior Producer for Minnesota Public Radio’s The Thread and co-host of The Cube Critics, a weekly film review podcast.

Presented by U.S. Bank and sponsored by Star Tribune, Talk of the Stacks is free and open to the public and held at Hennepin County Library - Minneapolis Central (300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis, MN 55401) in Pohlad Hall. February 27, 2018, Tuesday - Consolidated Public Office Building Pubic Meeting at Mill City Museum

The City of Minneapolis is moving forward with plans for a new downtown office building near City Hall to better serve residents and businesses. 

The goal of the Consolidated Public Office Building is to strategically collocate City employees who are now working in several leased and owned sites scattered around downtown Minneapolis. The new City office building will be diagonally across from City Hall at 501 4th Avenue S, a site now home to a parking ramp. It will be a sustainable and resilient building featuring a welcoming, customer-centric public service area.  

City staff and the project design team of MSR Design and Henning Larsen will be hosting a community engagement meeting on Tuesday, February 27 to gather project input.

The Neighborhoods 2020 process timeline has been extended through May 2018. If you'd like to receive regular updates on Neighborhoods 2020, visit the Neighborhoods 2020 web page, and click "Join the Neighborhoods 2020 mailing list" to sign up to stay informed of meetings, documents and public comment periods!

On February 27, all community members are invited to a 60 minute listening session at 5:15 pm to share their thoughts/ideas/dreams about the future of neighborhoods.

The listening session will take place at UROC - University of Minnesota Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center, Room 107, 2001 Plymouth Ave N. This is an opportunity to speak openly, candidly and directly to the Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission (NCEC), with the end result being that the comments will play a major role in developing a recommendation to the City Council about the future of neighborhoods.

All comments and opinions will be documented and shared with the overall community along with directing community members to our online video of the meeting. Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, “the king and queen of the banjo” (Paste Magazine), have a musical partnership like no other. Béla Fleck is a fifteen-time Grammy Award winner who has taken the instrument across multiple genres, and Abigail Washburn a singer-songwriter and clawhammer banjo player who re-radicalized it by combining it with Far East culture and sounds. The two met at a square dance, began collaborating musically and eventually fell in love. Over the years, they played together most visibly in the Sparrow Quartet alongside Ben Sollee and Casey Driessen and informally at a pickin’ party here, a benefit there or occasionally popping up in each other’s solo shows. Fans of tradition-tweaking acoustic fare eagerly anticipated that Béla and Abigail would begin making music together as a duo.

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time. This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

• The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
• "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
• The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
• The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
• Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
• Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928 and 1991
• The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

This is our chance to celebrate both the diversity in the Twin Cities restaurant community as well as its excellence. And at the same time support the good work being done by Open Arms, a nonprofit meal delivery service that prepares and delivers nutritious meals to people fighting life-threatening diseases. Proceeds from the awards program Afterparty and VIP dinner go towards Open Arms’ mission.

The formal affair's theme this year is a Masquerade Ball, and masks are strongly encouraged! The Bibliophile as Bookbinder: The Angling Bindings of S.A. Neff, Jr. Opening Reception

Bookbinder S.A. Neff, Jr. has spent over five decades growing a collection of angling books into a proper library of three thousand volumes, dating from 1554, with a focus on fly-fishing for trout and salmon. For over two decades he has focused his own binding efforts exclusively on work for his angling library. The Bibliophile as Bookbinder, his traveling exhibition and career retrospective, opens at MCBA with a reception and documentary screening from 6-9 pm on February 23. Come learn about the art of binding from a master of the craft! The exhibition runs through June 3 in the Main Gallery at MCBA.

Wine&Yoga is 60-minutes (6pm-7) of Ted-style yoga (taught by me) followed by a wine tasting (run by our resident Wine Guru and owner of Solo Vino, Chuck Kanski), accompanied by great organic fruits and berries, cheeses, chocolates and more (masterfully prepared by Sharon Picasso)(7pm-8:30). 

Yoga, food, and drink to pull you into the moment, rather than to distract you from it. Come for the yoga, stay for the bliss.
