Under This Roof

by Barbara Kingsley

directed by James A. Williams

May 4 - 20

The Guthrie is proud to present Full Circle Theater’s world premiere production of Under This Roof, by longtime Twin Cities actor and theater artist Barbara Kingsley. Directed by award-winning actor/director James A. Williams, Under This Roof centers on Mamie and Raymond Warren, who live in the segregated black neighborhood of central Cleveland in the late 1940s. After Raymond suffers a serious accident, Mamie hires a white woman named Bessie, whose arrival brings new challenges. Under this Roof examines issues that resonate with today’s realities: race, gender, aging, power, family, disability and love, on an ever-shifting axis, with unexpected results that are comic, painful and healing.

Bee Squad Charity Trunk Show

Join us to celebrate the launch of this partnership with a two-day Gumuchian trunk show - hosted in the iconic JB Hudson store at 901 Nicollet Ave, with complimentary valet parking.

Inspired by Dr. Marla Spivak at the University of Minnesota (UMN) Bee Lab, the Bee Squad helps beekeepers and the community foster healthy bee populations and pollinator landscapes through education and hands-onmentorship. They also communicate the latest bee research to audiences that are passionate about helping bees. They have a multitude of programs to help bees by educating people. Currently, Bee Veterans, Bee Arts, and Pollinator Ambassadors, a project that provides pollinator outreach training to diverse groups ranging from high school students to adult Spanish-speaking immigrants, are part of the Bee Squad.

Owners of Gumuchian’s “B” Collection can wear the baubles with pride, knowing they are supporting conservation efforts. The mini “B” is chic yet accessible at only $600.00 retail. The “B” diamonds by the year with a sophisticated honeycomb bezel is our most popular, suggested retail $5,200. And for those looking to make a statement, our beloved “life of the honeybee” charm bracelet is a real conversation starter. Each piece is crafted in the Gumuchian workshop in New York.

5th Annual Empty Bowls NE!

Suggested Donation: $20 (includes handmade ceramic bowl + all you can eat soup + no one turned away!)

"Empty Bowls," an international grassroots effort to address hunger, is coming again to the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District for the 5th year in a row and our second year at the Solar Arts Building event space: Solar Arts by Chowgirls!

ABOUT EMPTY BOWLS NE

Its concept is simple: Empty Bowls NE - Minneapolis asks local potters to provide handcrafted ceramic bowls and local restaurants to provide delicious soup; guests of the community event pay whatever they can, keep the bowl itself (as a good reminder of the empty bowls in the world and in our community), and 100% of proceeds raised go towards three terrific NE Minneapolis hunger causes. Similar projects have been held for years in nearby communities: St Catherine's University, Columbia Heights, Hopkins, Rogers, Northfield, Plymouth, Maple Grove, New Prague, and Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis.

Come out and show your support, and drink in the Rooted Red Ale with folks who love this park as much as you do!

Plant for the Future
Emerald Ash Borer is making its way across Minnesota and the highly-visible loss of ash trees is impacting our communities beyond our city streets. Without support, the Mississippi River will lose more than 20% of its tree canopy within the next decade, forever changing the landscape, river quality, natural areas and habitat for beloved wildlife. Please join us as we raise funds for a $1M Plant for the Future campaign - a proactive plan to protect the tree canopy for generations to come. Learn more.

April 29, 2018, Sunday - Washburn A Mill Tour at the Mill City Museum

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 South 2nd Street

Washburn A Mill Tour

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time. This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

  • The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
  • "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
  • The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
  • The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
  • Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928 and 1991
  • The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

April 28, 2018, Saturday - Skyways of Minneapolis Mobile Photography Tour

Time: 10am-1pm

Location: JB Hudson Jewelers

The Preservation Alliance of Minnesota (PAM) will host two mobile photography walking tours this spring, one through the Skyway system of downtown Minneapolis and another through St. Paul's Irvine Park neighborhood.

The tour will teach participants how to capture beautiful photos of the built environment using just a phone. The tour begins with a crash course on mobile photography from professional photographer & avid Instagrammer Eric Mueller. Then, Augsburg art and architecture professor Kristin Anderson will guide the group on a tour, highlighting the architectural, historical, and social contexts of each area.

The Skyways of Minneapolis tour will begin at J.B. Hudson Jewelers on the first floor of the historic Young Quinlan Building. The tour will use only Skyways to complete the route. This allows for a unique perspective on downtown Minneapolis' notable sights and structures like Government Plaza and IDS Center.

Registration is available online through the Preservation Alliance of MN website, www.mnpreservation.org. Sustaining Donors to PAM receive free admission to these tours. Students receive 50% off by using the coupon code “STUDENT” and bringing their ID the day of the tour.

These tour is hosted by the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota (PAM), a statewide nonprofit organization that leads and inspires people to connect to valued places in their communities. Whether it’s an old home or storefront on the corner, a rural community’s old high school, or an urban neighborhood’s long-retired factory, PAM works to preserve and protect the bond felt by community members toward these places, the memories such places represent, and the distinct characteristics they display.

This project has been financed in part with funds provided by the State of Minnesota from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the Minnesota Historical Society.

A current member of the South Dakota Symphony, he has served as principal cellist for the National Orchestra Institute, National Repertory Orchestras, Classical Symphony of Chicago, and Eastman Philharmonic Orchestra, and has played regularly with the Duluth, Syracuse, and New World Symphonies. April 28, 2018, Saturday - Soft Boundaries Opening Reception at Gamut Gallery

Opening reception at Gamut Gallery, 717 S 10th Street, Saturday, April 28 7-11pm $5

Soft Boundaries: curated by Juleana Enright

Exhibit runs April 28th - May 18th

FEATURED ARTISTS: Blair Moore, Dom Laba, Lamia Abukhadra, Laurie Borggreve, Mikki Coleman, Nadia Honary, shhhhame, Zeam Porter

In identity and expression, toughness and tenderness aren’t typically synonymous. To be soft and vulnerable is a sign of weakness, to be open is seen as an invitation to be manipulated. We place boundaries as a way to give us a sense of structure and security – emotionally, mentally, physically – but what happens when these boundaries get muddled? How does one embrace emotionality through identity? If vulnerability is the birthplace of joy, creativity, belonging and love, why is it so difficult for us to be tender and find calmness in the unknown?

For Soft Boundaries, eight artists explore how the vulnerable narrative can be used as an act of resistance, liberation and healing. Through the mediums of illustration, photography, video and audio installation, mixed media, book art, and sculpture, the artists present the distortions which keep us from wholly seeing ourselves and others, and the limitations when identity is categorized into the binaries of hyper-visible and invisible. Examining intersecting identities through art, Soft Boundariessets out to showcase the power of radical softness as a weapon and the strength and truth in allowing ourselves to be fully open.
