September 29, 2015, Tuesday - 'The War Came Home with Him: A Daughter's Memoir' Book Launch at Open Book

Time: Doors open at 6:00pm, reading at 6:30pm

Location: Open Book, 1011 Washington Ave

Local author Catherine Madison to discuss and sign copies of her new book The War Came Home with Him: A Daughter's Memoir at two upcoming Twin Cities events. Please include these events in your local events/arts calendar, or consider a review of the book. The author is available for interview and review copies are available upon request.

During his years as a POW in North Korea, “Doc” Boysen endured hardships he never intended to pass along, especially to his family. Men who refused to eat starved; his children would clean their plates. Men who were weak died; his children would develop character. They would also learn to fear their father, the hero. In a memoir at once harrowing and painfully poignant, Catherine Madison tells the stories of two survivors of one man’s war: a father who withstood a prison camp’s unspeakable inhumanity and a daughter who withstood the residual cruelty that came home with him.

Doc Boysen died fifty years after his ordeal, his POW experience concealed to the end in a hidden cache of documents. In The War Came Home with Him, Madison pieces together the horrible tale these papers told—of a young captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps captured in July 1950, beaten and forced to march without shoes or coat on icy trails through mountains to camps where North Korean and Chinese captors held him for more than three years. As the truth about her father’s past unfolds, Madison returns to a childhood troubled by his secret torment to consider, in a new light, the telling moments in their complex relationship.

Beginning at her father’s deathbed, with all her questions still unspoken, and ending with their final conversation, Madison’s dual memoir offers a powerful, intimate perspective on the suppressed grief and thwarted love that forever alter a family when a wounded soldier brings his war home.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Journalist Catherine Madison was editor-in-chief of Utne Reader, senior editor at Adweek and Creativity Magazine, founding editor of American Advertising, and editor-in-chief of Format Magazine. She has written articles for many publications, including the Chicago Tribune, Star Tribune, and Minnesota Monthly.

September 29, 2015, Tuesday - Author William D. Green "Degrees of Freedom: The Origins of Civil Rights in Minnesota, 1865-1912" Book Discussion at Central Library

Time: 7:00pm

Location: Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall

Author William D. Green will discuss his new book Degrees of Freedom: The Origins of Civil Rights in Minnesota, 1865-1912, Tuesday, September 29th at the Minneapolis Central Library.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

He had just given a rousing speech to a packed assembly in St. Paul, but Frederick Douglass, confidant to the Great Emancipator and conscience of the Republican Party, was denied a hotel room because he was black. This was Minnesota in 1873, four years after the state had approved black suffrage—a state where “freedom” meant being unshackled from slavery but not social restrictions, where “equality” meant access to the ballot but not to a restaurant downtown.

Spanning the half-century after the Civil War, Degrees of Freedom draws a rare picture of black experience in a northern state and of the nature of black discontent and action within a predominantly white, ostensibly progressive society. William D. Green reveals little-known historical characters among the black men and women who moved to Minnesota following the Fifteenth Amendment; worked as farmhands and laborers; built communities (such as Pig’s Eye Landing, later renamed St. Paul), businesses, and a newspaper (the Western Appeal); and embodied the slow but inexorable advancement of race relations in the state over time. Within this absorbing, often surprising, narrative we meet “ordinary” citizens, like former slave and early settler Jim Thompson and black barbers catering to a white clientele, but also personages of national stature, such as Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and W. E. B. Du Bois, all of whom championed civil rights in Minnesota. And we see how, in a state where racial prejudice and oppression wore a liberal mask, black settlers and entrepreneurs, politicians, and activists maneuvered within a restricted political arena to bring about real and lasting change.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

William D. Green, professor of history at Augsburg College, is the author of A Peculiar Imbalance: The Fall and Rise of Racial Equality in Minnesota.

September 27, 2015, Sunday - As Curated By: More than a Single Story at the Loft

Time: 2:30pm

Location: The Loft Literary Center, 1011 Washington Avenue S

A series of Sunday afternoon panel discussions with Black women writers from across the diaspora.

Black writers often get lumped together as though there is only one voice from which they speak. In a powerful TED talk, Nigerian novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie points out that there is never a single story. She says “It is vital to listen to the multiple stories of a person or a place, to truly engage and gain an objective and in-depth understanding of a subject being written about.”

In this series, writer Carolyn Holbrook will facilitate conversations with African American, Caribbean, and African women writers on the many voices and stories of Black women writers. Some discussion topics will include identity, the canon, and publishing.

The first panel discussion in the series will feature six African-American writers: Mary Moore Easter, Pamela Fletcher, Shannon Gibney, Andrea Jenkins, Tish Jones, and Lori Young-Williams.

September 24, 2015, Thursday - The Haunted Basement Preview Shows at The Soap Factory (4 nights)

Time: (see ticket link)

Location: The Soap Factory, 514 2nd Street SE,

Tickets

Each year, the creative minds behind the Haunted Basement gather some of the most talented visual and performance artists around to push the boundaries of terror - bringing unimaginable nightmares to life in the dark depths of The Soap Factory's raw, industrial basement.

And this year, we take it even further.

2015's Haunted Basement returns to its roots with two twisted pathways leading to artist created environments built throughout the entire 13,000 square feet of The Soap Factory's basement. But the nightmare starts before you even get there, as you are forced to wait in line through a maze of visual horror above the basement. Once its your turn, you'll separated into small groups and fed into the depths a handful at a time where you will then be given a choice: follow the signs to take the "easier" path or be brave and take the path filled with more horror and more torment than ever before.

Once a path is chosen, there's no turning back. But beware; we may decide to switch the signs at any time.

And still, be bold with your choice. You never know when bravery will be rewarded.

There is no set time. Maybe you'll find your way out. Maybe you'll be stuck in the nightmare until we decide to let you out. Be prepared. Our Basement Creeps are ready. And they've been waiting for you.

Returning with us this year will be custom smells by Art and Olfaction Award nominated St. Croix Sensory, a partnership featured in The New Yorker in 2014. Your worst fears brought to life with all five senses.

This year's Haunted Basement is Directed by Noah Bremer with Associate Directors Shannon Thorson and Christopher Barton. The 2015 Haunted Basement visual artists include: Chip Limeburner (Montreal), Kasia Wasko, Anna Johnson, Justin Sims, KJ Archer, Terri Ristow, Ryan Sanderson, Walker Friend, William Erickson - and a secret guest.

Interested in volunteering for the Haunted Basement? Email hauntedbasement@soapfactory.org! We have opportunities available for performers, makeup crew, build crew, front of house and more!

September 24, 2015, Thursday - The Bohemian Flats in Recent Fiction Author Event at the Mill City Museum

Time: 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 South 2nd Street

The Bohemian Flats in Recent Fiction Author Event

Meet three authors of recent fiction who have found inspiration from the historic Bohemian Flats, the area on low land next to the Mississippi River below the Washington Avenue Bridge that provided a home for Minnesota’s newest immigrants from the 1870s until 1931. This hidden history has been revealed in recent books in three different genres: The Bohemian Flats, a novel by Mary Relindes Ellis; A Tradition of Deceit, a historical mystery in the Chloe Ellefson Mystery series by Kathleen Ernst; and Keystones of the Stone Arch Bridge, a book for new readers by Carolyn Ruff.

Each author will read from their book and discuss how the story of Bohemian Flats informed their work. The authors will be available to sign copies of the books, which will be available for sale in the museum store. Attendees can also view the exhibit "Remembering the Bohemian Flats: One Place, Many Voices," on view in the museum's Mill Commons.

This is a free event.
