The Guthrie Theater presents
A Freestyle Theatre production of
U/G/L/Y
created and performed by Shá Cage
directed by E.G. Bailey
A new performance work by celebrated theater artist and activist Shá Cage, U/G/L/Y examines cultural, generational and personal definitions of beauty. Through lyrical storytelling framed by personal and pop culture lenses, Cage seamlessly inhabits multiple characters as she incorporates movement, video, and music by violinist Kate Pehrson. The second piece in a trilogy about identity, developed with director E.G. Bailey, U/G/L/Y is an energetic, emotional and impactful 80-minute examination of image.
Cage’s performances have captivated audiences and garnered her the title of Best Solo Performer of 2014 by City Pages. Following performances in the Guthrie’s productions of Appomattox, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Clybourne Park, this is Cage’s first performance of her own work at the Guthrie. Cage performs this work with violinist Kate Pehrson; other collaborators include Mike Wangen (lighting), Seitu Jones (set), Trevor Bowen (costumes).
