September 22, 2015, Tuesday - Faith Sullivan: Book Launch for GOOD NIGHT, MR. WODEHOUSE at Open Book

Time: 7:00pm

Location: Open Book, 1011 Washington Ave S

Milkweed Editions hosts Faith Sullivan: Book Launch for GOOD NIGHT, MR. WODEHOUSE

Come join us in Target Performance Hall on the second floor of Open Book to celebrate the release of Faith Sullivan's latest novel, GOOD NIGHT, MR. WODEHOUSE.

In GOOD NIGHT, MR. WODEHOUSE, Faith Sullivan returns to Harvester, Minnesota—the setting of her bestseller, THE CAPE ANN—to tell the story of Nell Stillman, an ordinary school teacher who has lived an extraordinary life. GOOD NIGHT, MR. WODEHOUSE celebrates the strength and resourcefulness of independent women, the importance of community, and the transformative power of reading.

Sullivan writes, "Life could toss your sanity about like a glass ball; books were a cushion. How on Earth did non-readers cope when they had nowhere to turn?”

FAITH SULLIVAN is the author of seven award-winning novels. A “demon gardener, flea marketer, and feeder of birds,” Sullivan was born and raised in southern Minnesota. An indefatigable champion of literary culture and her fellow writers, she has visited well over 1,000 book clubs. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband.

September 19, 2015, Saturday - Elliot Park Athletic Field Grand Opening

Time: Short ceremony begins at 10:30 am, followed by a youth soccer game

Location: Between the Hennepin County Medical Center and North Central University (NCU).

Celebrate Elliot Park's new athletic field at grand opening September 19

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is proud to host a grand opening ceremony commemorating the completion of the new Elliot Park athletic field on Saturday, September 19 at 10:30 am.

The new synthetic turf field replaces a battered grass field that had fallen into disrepair. Its high-quality, resilient playing surface has larger dimensions (70 x 115 yards) that give youth and adults competing in MPRB leagues an opportunity to compete on an NCAA-level facility.

“This field adds a durable, first-class amenity right in the heart of Minneapolis,” said MPRB Commissioner Anita Tabb. “I’m thrilled to see all of the hard work on this project come to fruition and am sincerely grateful for our many partners who helped make it happen.”

The grand opening ceremony – scheduled almost one year to-the-date after a ceremonial groundbreaking was held – features light refreshments and face painting and temporary tattoos for children. MPRB Commissioner Tabb and Hennepin County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin will give short speeches followed by a ceremonial goal kick and MPRB youth soccer game.

Location:  N. 2nd Ave from Washington to 1st Street

Street Pub Twin Cities

We are so excited to bring our pop-up pub of epic proportions to the Twin Cities on Saturday, September 19. Our 402-foot custom bar will be pouring beers from 40 taps in downtown Minneapolis and will donate 100 percent of proceeds from Street Pub beer sales to local nonprofits. In Minneapolis, we have teamed up with Second Harvest Heartland, one of the nation’s largest and most innovative food banks.

Not only will there be a huge selection of beers flowing from the Street Pub’s multitude of taps, but there will be great food to pair with it. Our corporate executive chef, Jeff Usinowicz, will be teaming up with local Twin Cities chefs from Red Cow and Republic to create some dishes that complement the many be...ers being served (think everything from the easy-drinking Mirror Pond Pale Ale all the way to the big and bold flavors of The Abyss). Other food vendors at the event will include The Happy Gnome and Stanley’s.

This family-friendly event will also feature bar games for prizes, special samplings and a simply amazing live, local music lineup that includes Big Wu, Solid Gold, Step Rockets and BBGUN.

September 18, 2015, Friday - Alma Lights Hand-In-Glove Reception and Performance

Time:  9:00pm - 12:00am (performance will begin at 9:45pm)

Location: 530 University Ave SE (next to Restaurant Alma)

Alma Lights Hand-In-Glove Reception and Performance

This Alma Lights reception will feature a special performance by the Labor Camp Orchestra for Hand-in-Glove, a national convening for the field of alternative art spaces, artist-led projects and artists’ organizations. All are welcome.

The performance of “Malignum Aditum Puncti” is an audio elaboration on the structural ideas introduced in the physical installation by Piotr Szyhalski. A sonic intervention in the two adjacent rooms sharing a wall creates a disjointed, yet cohesive musical experience. While the intense, immaterial presence of sound commands attention, and transcends the physical limitations of objects and spaces, the audiences are able to move freely between the two environments, effectively manipulating their own experience of the work.

This new, live musical material is constructed and performed by the Labor Camp Orchestra specifically for the “Malignum Aditum Puncti” event using analogue modular synthesis system.

About Alma Lights: http://northern.lights.mn/projects/alma-lights

Northern Lights.mn is excited to team up with Restaurant Alma this summer to present Alma Lights, a temporary arts hub that will support a range of artist installations at the Alma building (528-530 University Ave SE, Minneapolis) prior to Alma’s upcoming expansion.

As Restaurant Alma plans with James Dayton Design how to reconfigure the space with expanded facilities, Northern Lights.mn is inviting 10-20 artists, including:

These artists will create interventions, installations, and experiences throughout the building between July 16 and September 15. The interventions are intended to alter one’s perceptions of the mundane aspects of almost any space - the stairways, the moldings, the doors, the hallways, the storage areas, the flooring, the windows - to release the collective imagination of what an activated space might be for residents, workers, and even the surrounding community.

Spectacular and subtle artist interventions in the details of 528-530 University Avenue reflect Northern Lights.mn’s mission to support artists who help us see the world in a new light and Restaurant Alma’s drive to “to turn the extraordinary into the ordinary every day.”

September 17, 2015, Thursday - Creative City Road Map Open House

Time: 4:00pm – 6:00pm

Location: Public Functionary, 1400 12th Avenue NE

The Creative City Road Map is the City of Minneapolis’ planning process to think more strategically about how its arts and creative assets can best contribute to the local and regional economy and improve Minneapolis’ quality of life. The role of arts and culture in the City of Minneapolis, and the way the City chooses to support these industries and activities, are changing.

The planning process is guided by an interest in how arts, culture and the creative economy make Minneapolis a more welcoming and desirable place to live and gives underserved Minneapolitans access to economic and social returns. The Creative City Road Map’s vision is that arts and cultural activities have the capacity to expand the economic ‘pie’ and help more people reap benefits. At this open house, come take in music by local artists, mingle with the Artist Engagement Teams, talk to City staff and learn about the vision and data behind the planning process, and provide feedback on key parts of the draft Road Map. Your comments will help inform the final Road Map document and guide Road Map implementation.

Location: Capri Theater, 2027 West Broadway Avenue

Next Generation Parks Lecture: Cities for All: The Role of Parks and Open Spaces

Through the Minneapolis Parks Foundation’s Next Generation of Parks™ Lecture Series, global design innovators and local thought-leaders showcase the most exciting new parks destinations and delve into important issues affecting our vibrant city and region.

The 2015 series features impressive talent and dynamic speakers from across the county and around the world – including our own backyard. This event will feature Gil Penalosa, Executive Director of 8-80 Cities. How can we create vibrant and healthy cities for everyone, regardless of age or social status? How can parks and open spaces improve the quality of life that attracts and retains people to their communities? How can we meaningfully engage citizens in the process of place making? Gil answers these questions in a dynamic and inspiring presentation about creating more livable cities that put people and nature at their center. Drawing on his experience as Commissioner of Parks and Recreation in Bogota, Gil presents some of the now widely celebrated approaches to urban regeneration through investments in parks and public spaces. Gil also draws upon examples in cities at the forefront of innovation in public space reclamation that demonstrate the many benefits parks and public spaces have on health, social inclusivity and city vitality. A reception and walk-up work stations will immediately follow the presentation. Proudly presented in collaboration with: City of Skate, Juxtaposition Arts, Major Taylor Bicycling Club of Minnesota, Minneapolis Bike Coalition, Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership and The Loppet. General admission tickets are $5 + fees ($6.27 total).
