Beginning with the arrival of Minnesota’s first rail line in 1862, Minneapolis boomed in population. Flour milling, lumber production and warehousing took off as a rail network extended throughout the Upper Midwest. Take a guided tour to discover the impact of railroads on the Mill City, visiting railroad landmarks such as the Stone Arch Bridge, Milwaukee Road Depot and the Minneapolis Eastern Railway engine house and trestle. Along the way find clues to the vanishing railroad landscape and learn about the future of Twin Cities rail.

The tour includes 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility. The tour will begin and end at Mill City Museum, where participants can visit the museum’s gallery, included in the price of the tour. Tours are held rain or shine.

Second Story is the Loft’s reading series for young adult and middle-grade authors. Perfect for families and readers of all ages, Second Story pairs a first-time author with a more established voice in children’s literature.

Christine Heppermann is the author of Poisoned Apples: Poems for You, My Pretty, which was selected as a Best Book for Young Adults, 2014, by Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, The Boston Globe, and the Chicago Public Library. She also writes fiction and nonfiction for children, including City Chickens (2012) and, with Ron Koertge, Backyard Witch: Sadie’s Story (2015). A long-time book reviewer for a variety of publications, she currently reviews young adult literature for The Chicago Tribune.

Laura Ruby writes fiction for adults, teens, and children. She is the author of the newly-released YA novel Bone Gap, as well as the Edgar-nominated children's mystery Lily's Ghosts, the ALA Quick Pick for teens Good Girls (2006), a collection of interconnected short stories about blended families for adults, I'm Not Julia Roberts (2007), and the forthcoming middle-grade trilogy York. She is on the faculty of Hamline University's Masters in Writing for Children Program. She makes her home in the Chicago area.

There is a $5-$10 suggested admission fee associated with this event.

Located across the Hennepin Bridge from Downtown, this neighborhood was originally established in 1855 as the Town of St. Anthony Falls and later merged with The City of Minneapolis in 1872. September 10, 2015, Thursday - Sheridan Memorial Park Raingarden Tending

Sheridan Memorial Park Raingarden Tending

In addition to being the city's newest park, Sheridan Memorial is the first to be named for the local Sheridan community and was the result of a long-term effort to declare a local veterans park. Located near the Grain Belt brewery complex along the river, the park and the memorial are the inspiring result of a year-long planning process between Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board, Sheridan Neighborhood Organization, Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, elected officials, the Above the Falls Citizens Advisory Committee (which includes FMR), neighborhood residents and veterans. 

Last spring, FMR volunteers installed a large raingarden to beautify the park, provide bee, butterfly and bird habitat, and reduce the amount of polluted runoff flowing from the nearby parking lot and local streets into the Mississippi River. Volunteers are now needed to work with FMR ecologist Alex Roth and stewardship coordinator Adam Flett to help maintain the relatively young planting by weeding out invasive species — such as birdsfoot trefoil, sweet clover, burdock and dandelions (which aren't alwys something we pull, but will push out the native species in the raingarden if left unattended) — and assisting with other tending tasks, including replanting, as needed. 

This restoration is part of the larger Above the Falls Master Plan and part of FMR's Above the Falls program, providing opportunities for education, access and hands-on restoration along the banks of the Mississippi River north of St. Anthony Falls.
