Tonight / Mill City Times Endorses 4 Candidates for the Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Election on October 21

What: Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association (DMNA) Election & Annual Meeting

Where: The Depot, 225 3rd Ave S

When: Tuesday, October 21, 6:30PM

Early Bird Voting: 6:00PM-7:00PM

From redevelopment of the area surrounding the new Vikings Stadium, to the creation of a new Central Riverfront Master Plan, the complete makeover of Nicollet Mall, and the threat of hydropower drying up St. Anthony Falls, the next few years will reshape Downtown Minneapolis for decades to come.

Last year saw 4 new members join the DMNA Board, and they’ve made great strides revitalizing the organization.  Our endorsed candidates - 2 who would be new & 2 existing members - will complete the transformation and build on the momentum gained over the past 12 months.

A seat on the DMNA Board should not be viewed as a career enhancing networking tool or a resume builder.  It is an opportunity to roll up your sleeves and serve the community. These four Downtown residents & business owners, all extraordinarily engaged at the neighborhood level, will serve the Downtown neighborhoods well:

Nick Cichowicz is the current Board Chair on the DMNA and has served on the board for two years. His professional background includes experience in both the corporate and nonprofit spheres.  He is currently the Executive Director of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and previously worked at Target and at the Community Action Partnership of Suburban Hennepin in community outreach roles. In his most recent professional positions he has prepared grant proposals and funding requests while also implementing community outreach strategic plans targeting public, private and nonprofit organizations.

Nick has lived in Minneapolis since 2008 and has a passion for the city.  His focus on the DMNA Board has been on making Downtown MPLS vibrant, safe and livable. In the next two years Nick’s goal is for the DMNA to become, “with the help and input of residents, businesses and visitors alike” a key contributor to the strengthening of both Downtown East and Downtown West.

- Ken Searl is a businessman, entrepreneur and community leader.  He grew his first company from one office and $500,000 in sales to a 20-office, $35 million business, and most recently founded a start-up software company that attracted strong interest and support from venture capitalists. He has a long history of serving on both industry and nonprofit boards of directors.

Ken lives in Minneapolis and organized the Safety and Prevention Group of 15 condominiums in the riverfront as part of the Mill District Neighborhood Association. He devotes considerable time to volunteer work in the city, including working with grade school children at Ascension school and serving on the board of Mill City Commons.

- Carletta Sweet is a homeowner at RiverWest Condominiums in the Downtown West neighborhood of Minneapolis and an editor for a small business consultancy also located in the Downtown West neighborhood.

Carletta promotes public and private sector collaborative relationships that foster affordable housing, business development, and cultural as well as educational opportunities for the residents, businesses, employees and visitors to downtown Minneapolis.  To accomplish these goals she has been instrumental in forging relationships between DMNA and:  Aeon on whose board she served as chair; the East Downtown Council on whose board she currently serves as vice president; 2020 Partners as the DMNA representative; the Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership on whose board she currently serves as secretary/treasurer; and the Above the Falls Citizen Advisory Committee on whose board she currently serves as the downtown neighborhood representative.

Carletta joined the DMNA to assist in making the downtown neighborhood attractive, safe, economically viable, and a great place to live, work, play and visit, similar to what she experienced during the renaissance in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the South Loop (Burnham Park Neighborhood) downtown community of Chicago, Illinois. Carletta has been a DMNA board member since 1998 and brings a rich historical perspective of the issues that impact the community.

- David Tinjum grew up in North Minneapolis and now lives in the Mill District.  Seeing a need for better communication and community action among Mill District residents, he founded and publishes the Mill City Times website and weekly newsletter, which has mobilized the Mill District residents on important civic issues, such as the proposed Crown Hydro project.  He is Chair of the Mill District Neighborhood Association, he is a member of the Central Riverfront Regional Park Master Planning Citizens Advisory Committee, and he served as Campaign Chair for Jacob Frey’s successful run for the Minneapolis City Council.

David is also a businessman and community activist who would bring enormous energy and passion to the DMNA board. He is a self-made CEO, who started a software company at his kitchen table and grew it into a company with annual revenue of $9 million, employing 75 software engineers.

David will use his experience with Mill City Times and the Mill District Neighborhood Association to build real community engagement Downtown, so that everyone who lives or works Downtown has a seat at the table on the issues and projects that will shape our neighborhood for decades to come.

Call to action - we need your votes. There are four seats up for election to the DMNA Board of Directors. This means if you live or work in the Downtown East/Mill District or Downtown West neighborhoods you have 4 votes, one for each seat.

Make Sure We Have a Seat at the Table.  From redevelopment of the area surrounding the new Vikings Stadium, to the creation of a new Central Riverfront Master Plan, and the infill development already planned, you can ensure our neighborhoods have a seat at the table.  Make note of their names – Nick, Ken, Carletta & David – and use all four votes!

Crown Hydro Insults Minneapolis Park Board, Rejects Proposal as Unreasonable

The public comment portion of the Minneapolis Park Board meeting kicked off last night with the representative of Crown Hydro leading off his remarks with a scathing, indirect insult:

"When I first became involved with this project I was told it was a fools errand...that trust in the Minneapolis Park Board is trust misplaced."

He then went on to reject the Park Board's revised proposal as "not commercially viable" and "not commercially reasonable".

When it was my turn to speak I offered the following to the Board:

President Erwin, Commissioners,

My name is David Tinjum, thank you for allowing me to speak tonight on the topic of Crown Hydro.

This project has changed dramatically subsequent to the last board meeting on May 4, 2011.

In some regards you have made great strides to clarify and mitigate troubling aspects of this project - I commended you for your work.

However, more work remains, not the least of which is creating an up-to-date financial analysis of the proposed joint venture.

I'm here to ask you to table this resolution until such time you have performed due diligence commensurate with the scale, complexity and risk this project represents.

Thank you

The Board, which was scheduled to vote on the proposal, instead passed a motion removing the issue from the agenda.

What does this mean for the project?  At this point it's too early to tell.  Crown Hydro could just go away, but given the history of this project, that seems unlikely.  They could take legal action against the Board.  or, they could continue their efforts at the State House and Senate to pass a bill forcing the park Board to give them Nationally Historic Parkland under threat of having their funding cut off.

Stay tuned.  On Monday we'll publish an in-depth breakdown of the project and the "unreasonable" proposal from the Park Board.

May 11, 1858 - Minnesota Joins the Union

On this day in 1858, Minnesota became the 32nd state admitted into the Union. Then-President James Buchanan had received Minnesota’s application for statehood in January, but it became temporarily entangled with the issue of statehood for Kansas, a political hot potato because of the expansion of slavery.

Known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” Minnesota is the northern terminus of traffic on the Mississippi River and the westernmost point of an inland waterway, flowing through the Great Lakes and, with the Saint Lawrence Seaway, to the Atlantic. The state’s name comes from a Dakota word for “sky-tinted water.”

The French claimed the region from the mid-1600s to the mid-1700s, developing a fur trade, but they ceded the lands east of the Mississippi to Britain. The United States acquired part of the area from the British under the Treaty of Paris in 1783 and the rest from the French under the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

U.S. administration of the region began with passage of the Northwest Ordinance by the Continental Congress in 1787. The ordinance sets out the requirements for a territory to become a state.

Congress split the Minnesota Territory from the Iowa Territory in 1849. Between 1850 and 1857, Minnesota’s population rose from about 6,000 to more than 150,000, facilitating its successful application for statehood. As a state with much land suitable for homesteading, Minnesota proved particularly attractive to immigrants from Norway, Sweden and Finland.

From the 1820s on, Fort Snelling, where the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers meet, has protected the Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul.

During World War II, the War Department’s Military Intelligence Service Language School was at the fort. Some 300,000 soldiers were taught Japanese there.

It is now a national historic landmark.

Vikings Stadium Opinion from Steve Berg

From Steve Berg of MinnPost:

Recycling the Metrodome location is a better fit for the trends of the next half-century. The site leverages infrastructure investments already made, including two light rail lines, a connection to commuter rail, the state's two busiest freeways, thousands of parking spots, a grid of streets for easy traffic dispersal, a network of hotels and restaurants, and a tie-in to convention facilities.

And...

In other words, the Dome site offers customers more options and carries greater potential for non-football events, both local and national. Its location delivers more efficiency with less impact on the environment. And it adds to a concentration of other assets that makes the metro region more competitive nationally. From a competitiveness standpoint, putting an NFL stadium in Arden Hills is a little like mixing a weak drink. When assets spread out they lose their collective punch.

Vikings Stadium Update - Minneapolis to Announce Proposal for the Metrodome Site

From the Star Tribune:

City officials have scheduled a midafternoon news conference at the State Capitol to outline details of the proposal, which comes two weeks before the Legislature is scheduled to adjourn. The city is competing with Ramsey County, which wants to lure the Vikings to suburban Arden Hills, to partner with the team and the state on a new stadium.

The city plan, according to the source, would use sales taxes from the city's convention center for the project and also would provide money for renovation of Target Center, the home of the Minnesota Timberwolves in downtown Minneapolis. The proposal would also change the debt structure for Target Center.

No city property taxes would be used for the Vikings stadium, the source said.

Crown Hydro Update for Friday May 6 - NoCrownHydro.org

The intensity ratcheted up this week when an unexpected Letter of Intent with Crown Hydro was delivered to the Minneapolis Park Board just 2 hours before they were expected to vote on it.  Several Commissioners had not even had the chance to read it prior to the expected vote.  Commissioner Young made a motion to table the matter until the May 18 meeting so they could give the matter the consideration it deserves.  Sanity prevailed and the motion was approved.  Here's the vote:

Vikings Stadium Update - Down to Metrodome Site & Arden Hills

From the Star Tribune:

Hennepin County took itself out of the running on Thursday as a potential funding partner for a new Vikings stadium, a decision that appears to narrow the list of possible locations to Minneapolis' Metrodome and the former munitions plant site in Arden Hills.

Give & You Shall Receive, The Sanctuary Motto it Seems @SanctuaryRest

The Sanctuary has the most passionate, engaged fans I can think of.  Every time Naomi tweets or makes a Facebook post mentioning Mill City Times, the article she links to becomes the most popular on our site. Seriously, every time.

I think I know why - she and her restaurant are always giving.  Seems she is holding a charity event every week.  She is constantly promoting other neighborhood businesses on social networks without expecting anything in return.  When Kim and I stopped by 2 weeks ago for a drink and appetizers, she took the time to sit and chat in the middle of dinner hour.  And energy?  Wow, I don't know where it comes from.  Well, some of her energy must come from totally loving what she does, because it's obvious.

Thanks for everything you do for our neighborhood, and Mill City Times Naomi.  If there's such a thing as Karma, you have a lot of good things coming your way!
