Ceramics from the Weisman Art Museum Collection | A Personal View

Through October 31, 2012

Weisman Art Museum, 333 East River Road

While the Weisman has exhibited ceramics frequently, this is the first time an entire gallery has been devoted to the ceramics collection. Internationally respected potter Warren MacKenzie and WAM director Lyndel King curated this opening exhibit. They did not approach the selection with a particular framework in mind and then find ceramics to illustrate their ideas. Instead, after a long consideration of the collection, ways to organize the exhibit suggested themselves and pieces in the collection inspired the themes of the exhibit. For more information: http://weisman.umn.edu/event/ceramics-from-the-weisman-art-museum-collection-a-personal-view.

In 2012, with new park staff, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board will lead park master planning in both our Central and our Upper riverfronts. Come hear about hot issues on our riverfront and meet the new staff: Bruce Chamberlain and Andrew Caddock. Sponsored by Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership: http://www.minneapolisriverfrontpartnership.org.

Note: The following article speaks about a forum being held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Park Board headquarters. I don’t know if this is a different event or if there has been a change of time and location from what is listed on the Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership web site:

River Life Takes a Sip of Science - from @RiverLifeUMN

A post by Patrick Nunnally, U of M faculty member, and Coordinator for the U of M's Institute on the Environment’s River Life program.

From The River Talk Blog:

Last Wednesday, I was the featured speaker at the National Center for Earth Surface Dynamic‘s “Sip of Science” program, held at the Aster Cafe in Minneapolis.  Sip of Science brings scientific insights and understandings out of the laboratory and the field test plot, into more engaging places where discussions with nonscientists can be enhanced.

The Myth of Bassettโ€™s Creek

Another great, in-depth article by David C. Smith, author of City of Parks: The Story of Minneapolis Parks.

From Minneapolis Park History:

I heard again recently the old complaint that north Minneapolis would be a different place if Bassett’s Creek had gotten the same treatment as Minnehaha Creek. Another story of neglect. Another myth.

You can find extensive information on the history of Bassett’s Creek online: a thorough account of the archeology of the area surrounding Bassett’s Creek near the Mississippi River by Scott Anfinson at From Site to Story — must reading for anyone who has even a passing interest in Mississippi River history; a more recent account of the region in a very good article by Meleah Maynard in City Pages in 2000; and, the creek’s greatest advocate, Dave Stack, provides info on the creek at the Friends of Bassett Creek , as well as updates on a Yahoo group site. Follow the links from the “Friends” site for more detailed information from the city and other sources.

What none of those provided to my satisfaction, however, was perspective on Bassett’s Creek itself after European settlement. A search of Minneapolis Tribune articles and Minneapolis City Council Proceedings, added to other sources, provides a clearer picture of the degree of degradation of Bassett’s Creek – mostly in the context of discussions of the city’s water supply. This was several years before the creation of the Minneapolis Board of Park Commissioners in 1883 — a time when Minnehaha Creek was still two miles outside of Minneapolis city limits. The region around the mouth of Bassett’s Creek was an economic powerhouse and an environmental disaster at a very early date — a mix that has never worked well for park acquisition and development.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The battle to protect Minnesota's waterways from invasive carp species will have to be a team effort, according to Gov. Mark Dayton. Mississippi River Plays Starring Role in Greater MSP Video

Friday
Nov182011

4,000 Tons of Rock are Being Dropped Into a Gouge in the Mississippi River Bottom in Downtown Minneapolis.

From the Star Tribune:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to wrap up a project near downtown Minneapolis on Friday, and only a few fish may notice the difference.

But officials say the work -- filling a 12-foot-deep, 100-foot wide "scour," or gouge, in the bottom of the Mississippi River -- will alleviate a threat to the stability of the Lower St. Anthony Lock and Dam and a hydroelectric power plant being built on it.

Art in Public Places Sound Points

Multiple locations, including Tilted Bowl Fountain and I-35W Remembrance Garden

Public art celebrates the unique identity of Minneapolis neighborhoods, contributes to the livability of downtown and enriches the experiences of visitors, residents and workers in the city. Over the last two years more than one dozen works of art have been commissioned by and donated to the city. In collaboration with Minnesota Public Radio’s SOUND POINT™ project, the City of Minneapolis presents an audio cell phone tour featuring recently completed public artworks and interviews with the artists who created them. The tour highlights a range of artworks, including an artist-designed baseball backstop, a blooming bus shelter and a memorial to the 35W bridge collapse. A map available at http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/dca/docs/soundpoints.pdf directs viewers through a self-guided tour of 13 different works across the city. Signs posted at each artwork location will direct viewers to call or text a phone number or scan a QR code with their smart phone and listen to the artist describe the artwork in detail. Viewers also will have the opportunity to leave a text or verbal message describing their own impressions of the work or share a story about their neighborhood with journalists via MPR’s community-powered Public Insight Network.

JOIN US AT THE SCIENCE MUSEUM THIS THURSDAY, NOV. 17TH FOR 'THE DIRT ON SEDIMENT' — FREE; EXHIBIT ACCESS INCLUDED

Over the last year, the issue of sediment pollution in the Mighty Mississippi has come to the fore — explored in such documentaries as "Troubled Waters" and "Big River" and by Minnesota Public Radio, the Pioneer Press, Star Tribune, Daily Planet and other media. Join FMR and the Science Museum of Minnesota for this special City of Saint Paul-sponsored presentation to learn more about this important issue.

Why is Lake Pepin filling in? And what can we do about it? A guided conversation with local water quality experts will follow. Works by FMR volunteer Artist in Residence Peter L. Johnson will also be on display.

This event is free, however capacity is limited. Sign up soon with Alyssa Johnson at the Science Museum, or view the full event listing for more information.

HATS OFF TO JOE BEATTIE AND HIS HASTINGS HIGH STUDENTS!

Hand-pulling invasive plants with stubborn roots, gently stripping sticky seed from native grasses, wading into backwaters to remove floating pop bottles and other trash — teacher Joe Beattie and his Hastings High School biology students have certainly earned their green stripes, so to speak. Recently, Joe and his students received some well-deserved recognition for their dedicated efforts. First, Joe earned the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts' Teacher of the Year award. Then, just a couple weeks later, he and his students were featured in the Pioneer Press for their work in the Hastings Sand Coulee rare prairie with FMR.

Congratulations and thank you to Joe and all of your students!

PIONEER PRESS EXAMINES EFFECTIVENESS OF CLEAN WATER LEGACY FUNDS

With no authority to compel agribusiness polluters to clean up their act, can our state be successful in doing our part to pass a clean and healthy Mississippi River on to the next generation? Reporter Dennis Lien tackles this and other essential questions in a recent Pioneer Press article on the impact of clean-water funding through the Legacy Amendment. “[W]ith the earliest Legacy spending decisions already up for scrutiny, clean-water advocates are studying the projects under a microscope. Their early reviews say government often lacks the authority, once water-cleanup plans are prepared, to require improvements or to penalize polluters.”

7-ACRE HIGH BRIDGE DOG PARK TO OPEN IN ST. PAUL

A long-awaited off-leash dog park will open in spring 2012, as reported in the October 26th Star Tribune. The park — the second in the city — will be just below the downtown side of the Smith Avenue High Bridge, just west of the Upper Landing development along the riverfront.

The 7-acre dog park will be on land formerly occupied by the Xcel Energy High Bridge Coal Plant. Xcel demolished the plant in 2008, replacing it with a much cleaner natural gas facility just west of the site.

A third dog park is being planned for a site on the opposite side of the river and upriver a half-mile in Lilydale Regional Park. Its development timeline has not yet been established.
