Local History Round Table -- Minneapolis Madams: the Lost History of Prostitution on the Riverfront
Tuesday, September 10, 7 – 8 pm
Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall, Doty Board Room
Join author Penny Petersen for an illustrated presentation on the surprising and riveting account of the Minneapolis red-light district and the powerful madams who ran it. In their heyday Minneapolis brothels were not only open for business, but constituted a substantial economic and political force in the city. Petersen brings to life this nearly forgotten chapter of Minneapolis history, tracing the story of how these “houses of ill fame” rose to prominence in the late nineteenth century and what caused their demise in the early twentieth century. Books will be available for purchase. Please register to attend online http://www.hclib.org/pub/events/ or by phone 612-543-8000.

Park(ing) Day
Friday, September 20
PARK(ing) Day is an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals (operating independently of Rebar, but following an established set of guidelines) creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world. The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!

Scholarship Benefit Concert Featuring Ralph and Albertine Votapek
Friday, September 20, 8 pm
Antonello Hall
You’re invited to a concert to benefit the Joan Miller Scholarship fund. The program will include works by Haydn, Schumann, Debussy, Piazzolla and Ravel. Born in Milwaukee, Ralph Votapek began his musical education at age nine, when he enrolled in the Wisconsin Conservatory. Continuing his studies at Northwestern University, he subsequently attended the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School. He has served as Artist-in-Residence at Michigan State University where he is currently Professor Emeritus of Piano at the College of Music. Pianist Ralph Votapek’s early triumphs — as winner of the prestigious Naumburg Award and Gold Medalist in the first Van Cliburn International Piano Competition — were an auspicious prelude to an even more remarkable career. Votapek’s compelling keyboard style embodies all that is best in twentieth-century piano traditions, combining the fire, poetry and tonal warmth of the grand-manner prewar era with the modern-day virtues of fastidious clarity and electrifying rhythmic flair. Frequently joined by his wife Albertine in two piano and four hand recitals, the Votapeks have appeared in Buenos Aires under the auspices of the Mozarteum Argentino, on the Van Cliburn series in Fort Worth, the Pabst Theatre Series in Milwaukee, and have been featured on performing arts series of numerous colleges and universities. $20 suggested donation.
