Mill City Farmers Market – Live Cultures Day

Saturday, August 24, 8 am – 1 pm

Chicago Avenue between Second Street South and West River Parkway

This Saturday the market will celebrate the health benefits of live cultures. Treat yourself to a fascinating and informative kitchen demo with Chef Heather Hartman, featuring fermented delicacies from MCFM vendors Kiss My Cabbage and Singing Hills Goat Dairy. Be sure to stop by artist Ginny Sims' booth to take a look at her beautiful handcrafted fermenting crocks and take a stab at fermenting on your own. Come to the Market and stock up on kraut, yogurt and the freshest produce around. At this week’s 10 am Cooking Demo, join Market Chef Heather Hartman, with intro by Dr. Greg Plotnikoff, for two exquisite recipe demos: Cucumber Red Onion Salad in a Goat Yogurt Dressing topped with Kiss My Cabbage Sauerkraut, AND a Summer Melon Soup with Kombucha. Get recipes from this demo and every Mill City Cooks demo this season in the Market’s recipe archive at http://millcityfarmersmarket.org/category/recipes/. From 11 am to 1 pm, Mill City welcomes the delightfully adventurous Orange Mighty Trio back to the Market. The Community Booth will feature Allina Medical Clinic. The Doctors Uptown and Isles staff members invite you to Meet Your Vegetables at the Market. They'll have recipe cards for Zucchini Ribbon Salad so now you will know what to do with all that delicious zucchini. The Art Market will feature Ginny Sims, Aprilierre, Guillermo Cuellar, Chris Chookiatsirichai and Ty Aymond. Two Prospective Retrospectives: Lynn A. Gray: Chapters and Wayne E. Potratz: Fire Turtle

September 3 -- October 12 (11 am -- 7 pm, Tuesdays -- Saturdays)

Public Reception: Saturday, September 7, 6 – 8 pm

Katherine E. Nash Gallery, Regis Center for Art, University of Minnesota, 405 21st Avenue South

Like a good traveler, a good artist has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving. The career of an artist is a lifetime journey of exploration, discovery and self-expression. The Department of Art at the University of Minnesota celebrates the careers of two such artists, Lynn A. Gray and Wayne E. Potratz. Professors Gray and Potratz joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in the late 1960s. Since then they have taught and mentored countless students; both have made contributions to the Minnesota and national artistic ecology that run deep and wide. To mark their retirement from the University faculty, the Katherine E. Nash Gallery presents an in-depth look at the artistic practices of these artists with the exhibitions Lynn A. Gray: Chapters and Wayne E. Potratz: Fire Turtle. Lynn A. Gray creates two-dimensional artworks with a variety of media, from traditional drawing to oil bar, stencil and white gas. Wayne E. Potratz creates three-dimensional artworks with cast metals as the foundation and includes a variety of materials from stone and shell to animal and plant materials. Their artworks share a physicality of expression. Gray’s mixed media drawings appear to be carved out of pictorial space, and Potratz’s sculptures display a lightness of being not traditionally associated with metals cast at extremely high temperatures. Both artists draw artistic inspiration from their travels. For many years Lynn A. Gray has sought refuge in a rural Mexican outpost between the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Madre mountains. Wayne E. Potratz has travelled alone on the water in a canoe and experienced the relationship between time, movement, nature and culture. Each is a traveler-artist, intent on the journey and what it means, not where it leads. Exhibitions and related public programs are free and open to the public.
