Take action: The Minnesota Nutrient Reduction Strategy

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recently released its Minnesota Nutrient Reduction Strategy. The draft strategy has a number of serious flaws that will prevent our state from reaching our pollution reduction goals. Please take action to help us tell the MPCA to revise the strategy and make sure Minnesota does our part to clean up the nation’s waters.

New water quality standards proposed for the Mississippi River and Lake Pepin

Readers of Mississippi Messages know that cleaning up rivers begins with setting science-based pollution standards. Standards allow us to measure pollution and make science-based management decisions on how to clean it up. For decades, the state has been missing some key pollution standards. That is about to change.

Some river communities worried about their stinky reputation

River lovers may be interested to read a recent article in the Pioneer Press about the cities of South St. Paul and Newport where some neighbors and elected officials are concerned about odors emanating from several nearby industrial facilities. Others in the area say it isn’t a problem but it doesn’t take a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

Whose View? From Where?

December 2013

Each month in this section, we feature a photo from somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant, important, or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally.

This month’s photo is from the road less traveled, but the photo does include a road, that might help you identify this beautiful spot on the river.

Quote of the Month

“I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.”

Help Restore Habitat at Pine Bend Bluffs

Saturday, October 26 — 9:00 a.m.-noon
Pine Bend Bluffs near Highway 52, Flint Hills property, Rosemount

Join Friends of the Mississippi River, Flint Hills Resources and Great River Greening as we return to the Flint Hills property within the Pine Bend Bluffs Natural Area along the Mississippi River. One of the largest and most diverse native ecosystems left in the metro area, this site is only accessible to the public for special events such as this. Working with ecologists and staff, volunteers will remove invasive species — helping to stack pre-cut buckthorn brush — and assist with other restoration tasks in the oak forest area above the river. All supplies are provided, including lunch! Individuals, groups and families are welcome, but participants must be 15 and up. Learn more on the event page, or sign up now with Lindsay at lhefferan@fmr.org or 651-222-2193 x24. (Registration for this event closes October 18th.)

Bust Buckthorn in 'Tunnel Valley'

Saturday, November 2 — 9:00 a.m.-noon
Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park, Cottage Grove

Centered around one of the most impressive landscape features in southern Washington County, Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park totals nearly 600 acres. Its namesake ravine, known as "tunnel valley," was carved by a subglacial drainageway and is approximately a half-mile wide with 80- to 100-foot slopes. Historically these slopes were covered by oak woodland and savanna, but have become overgrown in with trees and invasive nonnative shrubs. Volunteers are needed to work with FMR ecologist Karen Schik to help restore this beautiful landscape by hauling away brush, which will open the canopy and make way for more beneficial native plants to return.

No experience is required and all supplies, as well as lunch, will be provided. Capacity is limited and registration required. Learn more on the event page, or sign up now with Lindsay at lhefferan@fmr.org or 651-222-2193 x24.

St. Anthony Falls Lock & Dam Getting Closer to Closure

From the Star Tribune:

– More than 50 years after the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam established Minneapolis as the head of commercial navigation on the Mississippi River, momentum is building in Congress to close the lock to protect Minnesota’s northern waters from invasive Asian carp.

Environmentalists and sportsmen are cheering a House panel’s decision Thursday to incorporate the lock closure into legislation funding ports and water projects across the nation — the first bill of its kind in six years. Despite a budget standoff that could shut down the government in two weeks, the water resources bill is widely expected to pass with rare, bipartisan consensus.

Lock Closure Within Reach in Fight Against Asian Carp

From Star Tribune:

This was no ordinary dead fish found perched atop a concrete dam abutment on the Mississippi River near Winona last month.

The 30-inch carcass was that of a voracious Asian carp, an invasive species threatening Minnesota’s waterways. More alarmingly, it was a type of Asian carp known for its spectacular leaping ability. This piscine athleticism may help the silver carp hurdle barriers on its journey up the river — the carcass on the dam abutment underscores this — but it also creates a serious hazard to boaters, who may be injured when motor-startled fish jump out of the water.
