4,000 Tons of Rock are Being Dropped Into a Gouge in the Mississippi River Bottom in Downtown Minneapolis.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to wrap up a project near downtown Minneapolis on Friday, and only a few fish may notice the difference.

But officials say the work -- filling a 12-foot-deep, 100-foot wide "scour," or gouge, in the bottom of the Mississippi River -- will alleviate a threat to the stability of the Lower St. Anthony Lock and Dam and a hydroelectric power plant being built on it.
