It's Labor Day Weekend, marking the official end of summer in Minnesota and the beginning of another school year! No need to get down about it; Mill City Farmers Market will be going strong every week through October. Get recipes from this demo and every Mill City Cooks demo this season in the Market’s recipe archive at http://millcityfarmersmarket.org/category/recipes/. From 11 am to 1 pm, MCFM welcomes back Potluck and the Hot Dishes, an energetic Twin Cities band delivering a blend of urban-folk, pop and alt-country with soaring three-part harmonies. The Small Business Booth will feature Petit Organics. Stop by and learn how this all-organic baby food delivery service works. The Community Booth will feature Appetite for Change, a community-driven nonprofit organization in North Minneapolis that creates programming, products and services that are wanted, needed and owned by the community. The Art Market will feature The Ink Orchard, Christy Wetzig, Heinz Brummel and Stirsby. For more information (including what products are expected at the market this week – don’t forget your shopping list), recipes and to sign up for the market’s email newsletter: http://millcityfarmersmarket.org/.

with Georgia A. Greeley

Two Thursdays: September 12 and 19; 6 -- 9pm

Learn three simple chapbook formats, plus a few embellishing techniques to make each basic structure look more complex and lovely. Students should come to the first class with a written work they want to bind. The instructor will provide a public domain text to learn the process of prepping a manuscript. Between classes, students will size, copy and collate their text so it will fit into the chosen chapbook format, then bring that work to the second class. From Mill To Museum: The Hidden History of the Washburn Complex, 1965-2003

September 13 – December 31

Hours: Open year round Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Group tours available by reservation.

“From Mill to Museum” is an exhibit of dramatic images and words about the Washburn A Mill from the years it sat abandoned between 1965 and 2000. After General Mills shut down the mill in July 1965, this National Historic Landmark sat unused except for a few tenants, curiosity seekers and homeless people. The exhibit will uncover this little-known period in the history of the building that is the home of Mill City Museum. It will feature photos from final years of flour milling, redevelopment plans by preservation pioneer Peter Nelson Hall, depictions of the abandoned mill by local artist Mike Lynch and photographer Matt Porath, words and photographs by JobyLynn Sassily-James who took shelter in the building during a period of homelessness in the 1990s, and studies by Tom Meyer, the architect of Mill City Museum. The exhibit is located in the museum’s central Mill Commons, and is free and open to the public during regular museum hours.

Along the way find clues to the vanishing railroad landscape and learn about the future of Twin Cities rail. The tour will begin and end at Mill City Museum, where participants can visit the museum’s gallery, included in the price of the tour. For more information visit http://www.millcitymuseum.org/tours. Fee: $14 adults, $12 seniors and college students, $10 children ages 6-17 and MHS members. Includes museum admission. Reservations required; call 612-341-7555 or register online.

Saturday, September 14, 9 am – 12 noon

Clay Squared to Infinity, 34 13th Avenue NE

Make your own tiles for a mosaic project with several different techniques including Millefiore and faux effects such as silver, pearl and jade. (No kiln needed!) In this class we will NOT be putting our pieces together to make a finished piece, but rather just making a collection of tiles that you can use mixed in with other tiles on your own later. Paula Poundstone

Monday, October 14, 7:30 pm

Guthrie Theater, 818 Second Street South, Wurtele Thrust Stage

Appearing on stage with a stool, a microphone and a can of Diet Pepsi, Paula Poundstone is famous for her razor-sharp wit and spontaneity. The Boston Globe said, “Poundstone improvises with a crowd like a Jazz musician...swinging in unexpected directions without a plan, without a net.” Paula’s commentaries can be heard on NPR’s Morning Edition and read on the Huffington Post, and she is one of the most popular panelists on NPR’s hilarious weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me. It’s impossible to attend a Paula Poundstone performance without marveling at her ability to interact spontaneously with audience members, who leave her live shows often leave complaining that their cheeks hurt from laughter. Paula Poundstone recently appeared on Wits, a live public radio show from Minnesota Public Radio, and will return to the Guthrie Theater on October 14. Tickets available at the Guthrie Theater Box Office, charge by phone at 612-377-2224 and online at GuthrieTheater.org For information: http://www.suemclean.com/shows/paula-poundstone-101413-guthrie/?utm_source=Stay%2520In%2520The%2520Loop%2520by%2520SMA&utm_medium=email&utm_content=18534833&utm_campaign=SITL-PattyGriffin-TedeschiTrucks-PaulaPoundstone.
