February 22, 2018, Thursday - Arts & Ales: Leather Working - Combo Class (Belt or Clutch) at Indeed Brewing

Time: 5:30p - 9:00p

Location: Indeed Brewing Company, 711 15th Ave NE

Arts & Ales: Leather Working - Combo Class (Belt or Clutch)

Inspired by the art of beer and local artisans, we’ve created a brand-new installment in our Arts & Ales Event Series: Leather Working. For this event, we are proud to join forces with Indeed Brewing Company and Blue Door Pub – who will begin each evening by serving up a pint of beer and a locally-crafted meal in Indeed’s private event space – “The Ox”. After enjoying the artful beer and food, we are sure to be inspired for our next “craft” – Leather Working.

The time-honored tradition of manipulating and sewing leather into usable forms creates not only beautiful keepsakes, but functional statement pieces that can be used for generations. We are proud to partner up with custom leather worker, Merchant Leather, to bring you not one, but TWO different leather working projects that you can choose from to create and enjoy for years to come.

Leather Clutch Purse Making

Clutch Purse Making allows you to create a truly unique leather clutch that is sure to make you the talk of the town. You will learn how to use classic techniques to construct a useful and beautiful hand-crafted masterpiece. Learn the basics of working with leather including selecting hides from several materials and colors, pattern making, hardware selection, cutting, punching and piercing leather, and saddle stitching – as well as finishing and care.  Choosing from several different colors of leather, as well as styles of clasps.

Leather Belt Making

Belt Making invites you to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake belt that will take your style to the next level. Learn the basics of working with leather including selecting hides from several materials and colors, pattern making, hardware selection, cutting, punching and piercing leather, and saddle stitching – as well as finishing and care. Choosing from several different widths and colors of leather, as well as styles of buckle, will allow you to fashion a belt that will be uniquely you.

For these classes, we will learn how to fold, sew, and punch the leather to fashion each design. Learning from the pros at Merchant Leather, you are sure to leave with not only a new self-crafted product, but new skills, knowledge, and appreciation that you can put to use in the future!

Built to last, these Clutches and Belts are “classically styled and crafted by hand – and designed for everyday use for generations to come”. Not just an art class, we invite you to join us to make something for yourself or as a gift that will certainly be treasured and well used. Join us for one of these special Arts & Ales events to tap into your creative side, release your inner artist, and create a unique heirloom that is sure to be a truly prized possession.

February 22, 2018, Thursday - Annette Peters of Domaines and Appellations - European Wine Masterclass at Aloft

Time: 6:30p-8:30p

Location: Aloft, 900 Washington Avenue S

Annette Peters of Domaines and Appellations - European Wine Masterclass

Hosted by 1010 Wine & Spirits

Annette Peters is the President of Domaines and Appellations, a local importer. Domaines and Appellations seeks out small producers and family farms making wines that reflect their place of origin  as purely and naturally possible. The goal is to deliver wines with a high pleasure factor, precisely made, easy to drink wines that are affordable, made more for the glass and less for the pedestal, but inspiring  intellectual exercise if you should so chose. They also are conscientiously geared to serve a legacy of family, environment, tradition, and culture.

We look forward to many exciting tastings in the new year. We are starting with the best one. Nobody has had a greater impact on the vibrancy and progressiveness of the wine culture in the twin cities than Annette Peters. I encourage the wine novice to the serious oenophile to attend this tasting of some of Annette's favorite selections.  Ask the people who attended Annette's Class last year, it will be memorable.

This is the line up:

Lenoble Intense Brut (Champagne, France)
Gerard Boulay Sancerre (Loire, France)
Bott-Geyl Points Cardinaux (Alsace, France)
Jean Fournier Cuvee Saint Urbain (Burgundy, France)
Burlotto Pelaverga (Piedmont, Italy)
Chenu Savigny Vieilles Vignes Rouge (Burgundy, France)
Ampeleia Kepos (Maremma, Italy)
3 Cellier Chateauneuf du Pape (Rhone, France)

For reservations, call 1010 Wine & Spirits at 612-339-4040, or send an email at info@1010wws.com. The cost of the event is $25, which can be used toward the purchase of anything that night.

February 22, 2018, Thursday - SPCO at Icehouse

Time: 7:30pm

Location: Icehouse, 2528 Nicollet Ave

SPCO at Icehouse

Program:
“Ljova” Zhurbin: Raisins and Almonds and Budget Bulgar for Violin and Viola
Kodály: Serenade for Two Violins and Viola
Beethoven: Serenade in D Major, Op. 8

Francisco Fullana and Maureen Nelson, violin

Brooklyn-based composer Ljova goes back to his Klezmer roots as the opener to this chamber music performance at Icehouse, and the Kodály Serenade captures the folk music of his native Hungary. Beethoven’s Serenade in D Major for violin, viola and cello, gives each member of the group a fair share of beautiful melodies and virtuosic passagework. The viola takes on an especially important role in this program, functioning not only as an inner voice in the Beethoven, but in the first half as the bass line and anchor of the group.

Tickets:

$20 and includes a drink of your choice (tap beers, house wines, rail drinks and rocks cocktails or non-alcoholic house-made beverage). Icehouse's gourmet American cuisine (appetizers, dinner and desserts) will be available for purchase during the performance.

Renowned for its artistic excellence, remarkable versatility of musical styles and adventurous programming, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra is widely regarded as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world. Now in its 59th season, the SPCO has recently undergone transformational change with the opening of its new home, the Ordway Concert Hall, the addition of a new generation of players, and significant changes in its artistic vision. The SPCO is primarily an unconducted ensemble that performs a broad range of repertoire from Baroque to new music and works in close collaboration with a diverse series of artistic partners, including British Baroque specialist Jonathan Cohen, American pianist Jeremy Denk, Swedish clarinetist Martin Fröst, Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto. Past Artistic Partners include Roberto Abbado, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Joshua Bell, Douglas Boyd, Nicholas McGegan, Stephen Prutsman, Dawn Upshaw, Christian Zacharias and Thomas Zehetmair.

The SPCO is nationally recognized for its commitment to broad community accessibility, its innovative audience outreach efforts, and its educational and family programming. Regular subscription series are performed in a variety of different venues across the Twin Cities metropolitan area each season, a unique commitment to geographic accessibility for a major orchestra. The SPCO offers the most affordable tickets of any major orchestra in the United States, with over 50 percent of tickets available for $12 or less, and has expanded accessibility even further by offering free tickets for children and students starting in the 2016-17 season as a part of the New Generation Initiative. The orchestra also offers an innovative ticket membership model in which members pay $7 per month to attend unlimited concerts. The SPCO’s award-winning CONNECT education program reaches over 5,000 students and teachers annually in 12 Minneapolis and Saint Paul public schools, and its Target® Free Family Music program provides engaging and educational experiences for thousands of Twin Cities children and families each year. The SPCO’s Liquid Music Series (named “Best of Classical” by The New York Times) develops innovative new projects with iconoclastic artists in unique presentation formats and invites adventurous audiences to discover the new and the fascinating within the flourishing landscape of contemporary chamber music.
