Location: The Lab Theater, 700 North 1st Street

Minnesota Opera presents: Odyssey

February 9 – 11

Will Odysseus ever make it home? When he began his journey at the end of the Trojan War, he expected the trip to last a few weeks, or a couple of months at most—he had good boats and a top-notch crew, and he was one of the smartest captains around. He was also very handsome, and a good storyteller, so people were eager to offer him hospitality along the way. Odysseus was almost perfect, except for one thing—he was full of himself, and that kept getting him into trouble.

“One of the most innovative minds in modern British music: she wears her obvious theoretical grounding lightly and never lets it obstruct her ecstatic quest for new ideas and deranged stimuli. And Varmints is a knockout, the kind that makes you see cartoon stars.” —Pitchfork

Visionary maximalist composer Anna Meredith makes her Twin Cities debut with an evening of her “striking and smart” (The Guardian) electro-acoustic music performed by her band featuring clarinet, cello, electric guitar, tuba, drums and electronics, a live show National Public Radio called “incredible.” Meredith’s debut album Varmints (2016) mixes contemporary classical, art pop, electronica and experimental rock into compositional experiments like few before her. Morning Forum with Preserve Minneapolis: How (Not) to Build a Sports Facility

Preserve Minneapolis is thrilled to welcome Kristin Anderson as our February Morning Forum speaker! Kristin is an educator of arts and history with a particular interest in sports facilities.

How (Not) to Build a Sports Facility: The 1884 Minneapolis Ballpark

In recent weeks, the Minneapolis and St. Paul have been in the throes of Super Bowl planning and events, with the signature event being the big game in the big new stadium. The USBank Stadium project has generated significant controversy over the years, and it is certainly not the first sports facility to create conflict in the community. Leaving Super Bowl LII behind, we will travel back to 1884 to learn about another ambitious and controversial project, an architect-designed sports facility on the edge of downtown Minneapolis.

This is a *free* event - all are welcome! Coffee and light refreshments will be provided. Donations are welcome!

February 3, 2018, Saturday - Seeing Voices: A Solo Exhibition from Jane Wunrow Exhibit Opening at Gamut Gallery

Time:  7-11pm, Performance at 8pm  $5 admission

Location: Gamut Gallery, 717 South 10th Street

Seeing Voices: A Solo Exhibition from Jane Wunrow

Featuring a noise set along with visual projections by Michael Masaru Flora & guest.

Jane Wunrow describes her migraines as a “waking dream,” where her fogginess, pain, and visual aura come together and force her to view the world in a different way, with perceptions of reality wholly altered. Migraines and dreams remain central to Wunrow’s artistic inspiration, not only due to their visual effects but also because of her interest in the science behind them. For the last several months Wunrow has immersed herself in a more clinical-based self-study of psychology’s discourse around dreams and neurology’s discussion of migraines in an effort to understand what causes them. Her artistic output on the subject culminates in the collection “Seeing Voices,” on display at Gamut Gallery February 3rd through March 3rd, 2018. The opening reception on Saturday, February 3rd, 7-11pm, will feature a live noise set accompanied with visual projections from Michael Masaru Flora & guest.

Wunrow’s works are directly influenced by specific dreams or migraine aura she experiences, particularly those that surface subconscious fears, pains, or perceptions. While creating, Wunrow puts herself back into that mental headspace and taps into the emotions that she felt in that dream state, imbuing her works with raw feeling. The artist believes that viewers are perceptive to these contributions, and that the work would be ingenuine without this process, which she also cites as a method of working through the myriad of sensations that dreams create.

While a familiar face in the Twin Cities art community, this is Wunrow’s first solo exhibition. As a full-time mother of three, the artist originally did not have a designated studio space, forced to work out of coffee shops. While limiting the scale and materials of her works, this allowed Wunrow to hone her craft and find her signature style. After receiving a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, Wunrow made the move to an artist studio space allowing for the scale of her work to increase dramatically, creating new challenges and navigations of materials. “Seeing Voices” …...places Jane Wunrow’s dreams and visual perceptions into the physical realm.

February 1, 2018, Thursday - New portraits by Kristie Bretzke at Traffic Zone

Time: 6 PM - 7:30 PM

Location: Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art, 250 3rd Ave N

New portraits by Kristie Bretzke

Traffic Zone Gallery presents Kristie Bretzke: Coal Room, an exhibition of new psychological portraits by this Minneapolis-based artist. Kristie Bretzke’s portraits are simple, quiet and introspective. Her focus is specific and personal. Her current exhibition, Coal Room, features portraits inspired by the moody, cool light of the basement coal room at an artist retreat on the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland. This exhibition is a culmination of many years of intense study and obsessive observation. Bretzke’s work has been described as strikingly straightforward and classical, but her slightly voyeuristic perspective lends a modern edge.

January 8 - February 16, 2018

Gallery hours:
Monday-Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and by appointment
Free and open to the public
