Theatre Coup d’Etat invites you to experience the timeless tale of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, this time told with a twist. Romeo & Juliet has been heralded as “one of the greatest love stories ever told.” We have read it in our high school English classes, watched it unfold on countless stages and have seen it reshaped and splashed on to movie screens across the world. It is a timeless piece of work with a timeless message; that true love is a simple, yet pure and powerful part of life and no single individual should be persecuted in their effort to pursue it. Due to the upcoming vote on the marriage amendment, and in an effort to uphold their mission “to provoke an emotional and analytical response in [their] audiences by showing the depth of the human condition through both classical and contemporary works,” and to support Minnesotans United for All Families “Pledge to Vote No,” campaign, Theatre Coup d’Etat will be presenting William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet with Romeo played by a woman, as a woman. Tolerance Minnesota, the award-winning educational initiative of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) and Photography at the Center are proud to collaborate in bringing the photo exhibit, “When They Came to Take My Father,” to Minnesota. The exhibit, created by world renowned photographer Mark Seliger, consists of 22 black and white photographs of Holocaust survivors and accompanying testimonies. The exhibit is presented courtesy of Holocaust Museum of Houston, which is dedicated to educating people about the Holocaust, remembering the 6 million Jews and other innocent victims and honoring the survivors’ legacy. Using the lessons of the Holocaust and other genocides, the Museum teaches the dangers of hatred, prejudice and apathy. Presented in collaboration with Tolerance Minnesota, which seeks to create a more tolerant society, this exhibit is supported by The Blythe Brenden Fund of the Ted and Dr. Roberta Mann Foundation, and presented by Holocaust Museum Houston. Tolerance Minnesota is a program of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas.

The Human Condition: A Survey of Humanity

The theme of the show is both timely and universal. It allowed each artist tremendous freedom to explore everything from breaking news to self-examination; from moments captured to figure studies. The winning photograph (as selected by juror Annie Griffiths-Belt), My Father, Pensive, “glows with tenderness and exquisite light. It is indelible. I couldn’t take my eyes off it, nor will I ever forget it.” The second place photograph, Before the Bris, could have been taken 100 years ago, or yesterday. It is alive with honest emotion. And the third place photograph, Untitled, is a stunning and original depiction of innocence and horror.

Nobel Laureates: 20 Portraits by Doug Knutson

Photographer Doug Knutson specializes in the photographic illustration of people for articles, ads and annuals. A native of the Minneapolis area, Knutson received his B.A. from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, before returning to Minneapolis where he has been a photographer since 1986. Knutson also has studied with documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark and portrait photographer Arnold Newman. Knutson often photographs assignments for Time, Business Week and Information Week magazines. He has photographed many annual reports and shot ads. Among those who have sat for a Knutson portrait are Nobel laureates Elie Wiesel, Lech Walesa and Archbishop Desmond Tutu; political figures Walter Mondale, Harold Stassen, David Gergan and numerous cabinet Secretaries and Ambassadors; authors Amy Tan, Tom Clancy and Rita Dove; television news personalities Tom Brokaw and Charles Osgood; former Beirut hostages Terry Waite and Terry Anderson; photographer Gordon Parks; explorers Robert Ballard (Titanic), David Breashears (Everest) and Sylvia Earle (National Geographic Society); and actor James Earl Jones.

Society of Professional Journalists: Dramatic Details—Without Dramatic License

The Society of Professional Journalists and the Loft cosponsor an event exploring the choices writers make when writing the “truth.” "The tools of the theater are not the same as the tools of journalism." Those were the words performer Mike Daisey used last winter to defend his now infamous monologue about Apple's supply chain in China. The story was full of vivid details about Daisey's undercover observations at the factory complex and his emotional conversations with its workers—many of which turned out to be made up. After the piece aired on This American Life, Daisey admitted to taking "dramatic license" in order to tell a more compelling story. At this event, we will interview four Twin Cities journalists about how they incorporate dramatic details into their stories—without the dramatic license. How can writers hone their eyes and ears to recognize details that bring true stories to life? Panelists include Sasha Aslanian of Minnesota Public Radio, David Hanners of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Boyd Huppert of KARE 11, and Steve Marsh of Mpls St. Paul and Delta Sky magazines. Second Story Reading Series: W.H. Beck and Julie Bowe

Second Story, the Loft's reading series for authors of children's and young adult literature, presents authors W.H. Beck and Julie Bowe. W.H. Beck is an elementary school librarian by day and children's writer by night (well, actually, very early mornings). She reads and writes in northwestern Wisconsin with her husband, two boys, and a big black dog. Malcolm at Midnight is her first book. Julie Bowe is the author of the Friends for Keeps series -- My Last Best Friend, My New Best Friend, My Best Frenemy, My Forever Friends and My Extra Best Friend. My Last Best Friend was included in Kirkus Reviews '07 First Fiction Spotlight: Promising Debuts from Important New Voices, was a finalist for the 2008-09 Great Stone Face Book Award and won the 2008 Paterson Prize for Books for Young People. Second Story is curated by authors Swati Avasthi and Heather Bouwman.

The Superintendent’s Recommended 2013 Budget for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board focuses on maintaining park services and facilities, strategically addressing financial and operational challenges and improving organizational efficiency and service delivery. “The proposed operating budget reflects a zero percent property tax increase and focuses on maintaining what we have, with prioritized budget package options for Board consideration that would fund specific programs and services up to the maximum of a three percent property tax levy,” explained Superintendent Jayne Miller. The Superintendent’s Recommended 2013 Budget totals $62,794,451 for the general operating fund and $10,245,866 for the enterprise operating fund. Initiatives launched by Superintendent Miller in 2012 to align revenue and expenses to department activity areas are continued in her recommended budget. Public Meeting on Conservation Districts

Conservation districts promote sustainable neighborhoods by protecting important physical features and conserving resources in a manner that offers more protections than the zoning code, but fewer protections than historic district design guidelines. The City is exploring ways to conserve important neighborhood resources through the creation of an ordinance that permits the future designation of conservation districts. Public meetings will be held over the next four months to seek input from residents on establishing conservation districts. This first meeting will be a visioning workshop to discuss what residents like about the aesthetics of their neighborhood, the type of alterations that can be made under this ordinance, and help define regulatory roles and fees. Minnehaha Park Playgrounds Survey

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) presented preliminary concepts and play equipment options for Minnehaha Park playgrounds at an open house October 24. The MPRB now seeks additional responses to the concepts for the playground in the Wabun Picnic Area and for the playground on the North Plateau (up the hill north of the main picnic pavilion). The Wabun Picnic Area playground will be the first universal access playground in the Minneapolis park system. This means that over 70% of the play features will be accessible, a much greater percentage than required by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Concepts for the North Plateau playground honor its WPA history. Links to concepts can be found on the Minnehaha Park Playground Renovation project page on the MPRB website. Review the concepts, and weigh in on your preferences by completing the survey.

Internationally celebrated finger-style guitarist Tim Sparks is commemorating the 20th anniversary of his solo interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite by re-releasing the recording on Tone Wood Records. Sparks will perform pieces from The Nutcracker Suite, along with his world and jazz repertoire, at a concert at the Guthrie Theater in the Dowling Studio. National Park Service “Ranger on Call” Virtual Tour of the Mississippi River

Visitors and residents of the Twin Cities can now have a national park experience 24 hours a day with Ranger on Call, a new virtual tour of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. Ranger on Call is an audio guide to exploring some of the park’s most special places. The guide features a series of 20 stops designed to expand users’ knowledge of the Mississippi River and provoke exploration. Users can listen to stories from all along the 72-mile corridor of the national park, and download podcasts and maps online at http://www.rangeroncall.com. Or, for an all-encompassing park experience, users can visit the featured sites along the river in person and dial 1-877-727-1172 (toll free) for the cell phone tour. Ranger on Call features narration by Don Shelby, who brings to life the stories from diverse communities along the river. Tour stops feature the Minneapolis Riverfront, Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary and Lock and Dam #2 in Hastings. Ranger on Call was created by the National Park Service and the Mississippi River Fund. The national park’s 72-mile boundary stretches along the Mississippi River from Dayton/Ramsey, through Minneapolis and Saint Paul, to just south of Hastings. It includes a range of cultural, economic and natural resources — from historic sites like Fort Snelling to unique features including the river’s only waterfall and gorge, to public parks and wildlife refuges. MCBA/Jerome Foundation Book Arts Mentorship Series IV

Minnesota Center for Book Arts is proud to announce the recipients of the MCBA/Jerome Foundation Book Arts Mentorship Series IV:

Lisa Loudon (Minneapolis), mixed media artist
Presley Martin (Minneapolis), environmental artist
Dave Molner (Roseville), photography and historic/alternative process printer

Three jurors, reflecting diverse perspectives and considerable expertise, reviewed 55 applications to make the final selection of six recipients. Jurors included: Erik Brandt, graphic designer and Associate Professor at Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD); Sarah Fox, author, editor, educator and co-founder of the Center for Visionary Poetics; and Keith Taylor, photographer, printmaker and recipient of the MCBA/Jerome Mentorship Series III. Mentorship recipients will now embark on a year-long study of new artistic disciplines and one-on-one work with master artist mentors to develop their individual projects. The mentorship program will culminate in an exhibition in MCBA's main gallery in November 2013.

Mill City Times

This web site covers “life, work and play in the Historic Mill District.” It also includes an event listing that is more expansive than the Mill District and that would be a useful resource for you in between issues of the RiverCurrent (or if, as sometimes happens, you accidentally deleted it).

Mississippi River Trail

The Mississippi River Trail follows the course of the mighty Mississippi from its headwaters to the Gulf. A new MRT resource website has been launched for the Minnesota segment of the trail http://www.dot.state.mn.us/bike/mrt.html complete with interactive Google Earth based maps, and a complete series of maps printable at 8 1/2” by 11.”

‘Make and Take’ Rain Barrel Workshop

Minnesota Humanities Center (near Lake Phalen), St. Paul

Did you know that, according to the EPA, lawn and garden watering make up nearly 40% of total household water use during the summer? Or that the biggest threat to our waters today is polluted runoff — water that runs off our roofs and into our streets and alleys, carrying oil, sediment and other contaminants into our lakes, rivers and streams?

But there is one simple way to save water, save money, and help protect our watershed: use a rain barrel to collect and store rainwater for use on your lawn and gardens.

During the course of this workshop, participants will be provided with the necessary parts ($30 per kit) and guided through the process of converting these containers to rain barrels. To learn more, or sign up, please see the event listing.

On Monday, October 8, the RiverFirst Initiative debuted the new RiverFirst.com website, complete with dramatically different design that reflects the sweeping scope of the Mississippi River ... and the work we’re doing to redefine our relationship to it with 21st-century parks design.

It's a Go: Steering Committee Meets

On Thursday, October 11, the RiverFirst Steering Committee met to learn about R1 Initiative progress during our start-up phase and to provide input on the Committee’s composition. The highlights:

Jeremy Hanson Willis, of Minneapolis CPED, announced that the Above the Falls Master Plan - originally created in 2000, and now under review - will be presented by year-end. ATF review relates to the Port of Minneapolis, also known as the Upper Harbor Terminal, which is identified as the site of an R1 Priority Project called Northside Wetlands.

Tom Leader, of the R1 Design Team TLS/KVA, presented a mid-scope slideshow, outlining the Design Team’s structure and timeframe, and showcasing some fantastic images from their early work on schematic design of Scherer Park, especially.

State of the River Report release a huge statewide success

FMR and The National Park Service’s late-September release of the groundbreaking State of the River Report has been generating substantial media coverage. If you missed its well-attended launch at the Science Museum of Minnesota, you can catch up an upcoming presentation, schedule one of your own, or read the report and take the State of the River Stewardship Pledge.

Join us! FMR’s final fall outings

There’s still time to get outside to help improve wildlife habitat and water quality this season. Saturday, October 20th, October 27th or November 3rd, 9a.m.-noon, volunteers are needed to help FMR staff just off the beaten path in Hastings, Cottage Grove and Rosemount. Helping to remove invasive species and haul brush, you’ll get a real workout, and should see a real difference after just a couple hours of work. Sign up for one or all!

‘Evening Celebrating the Mississippi River’ once again a success!

‘Cleaning up at Maplewood Mall’

When pollution control officials realized that minerals were seeping into Maplewood's Kohlman Lake, it wasn't difficult to figure out why: the nearby 70-acre Maplewood Mall parking lots were laden with phosphorus and sediment. Rain would wash minerals from the impervious surfaces into storm sewers, through Kohlman Creek and into the 74-acre lake, which then turned green with algae. Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District planners not only recognized the problem, but seized it as a chance to demonstrate how a state-of-the-art retrofitting with tree trenches, raingardens, porous pavements and other kinds of low-impact storm-water management techniques could transform a commercial parking lot into an environmental asset. ‘Important change isn't spontaneous’

What do Lindsay Whalen of the Minnesota Lynx and the Redwood River have in common? The success of each can be linked to landmark legislation that turns 40 this year: Title IX and the Clean Water Act. As the fall campaign season approaches with its inevitable targeting of government regulations as obstacles to progress, Michelle Beeman, deputy commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, invites us to take a look back and recognize the importance of such monumental acts — to stop and recognize: "Wow, that was really the right thing to do."

Powderhorn Lake scrubs out pollution

Although the State is still adding many more lakes and rivers to its list of water bodies that fail to meet water quality standards, there are occasionally a few bright spots worth mentioning. Most recently Powderhorn Lake, a pond in the heart of South Minneapolis was removed from the list.

Hastings Bridge placement time-lapse video

Watch the entire process of moving the 6.5 million pound Highway 61 bridge down the river and lifting it into place. The process took about 60 hours from start to finish, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Hastings Scientific and Natural Area Brush Haul

Hastings SNA is a small but diverse, high-quality natural area adjacent to the Vermillion River bottoms. Floodplain forest and marshland cover the low-lying areas, while oak forest and sugar-maple basswood forest cover the steep, 170-foot limestone bluffs. The site has a wonderful array of woodland wildflowers, but exotic brush like buckthorn is creeping in from the edges.

Volunteers will work to begin the restoration of some of the blufftop areas by hauling cut brush. Professional crews will have already cut the brush prior to the event, and by hauling it out volunteers will help open the canopy, making way for more beneficial native plants to return.

’Attack of the Asian carp’

We’ve all heard the horror stories or seen the YouTube videos; giant fish leap from otherwise placid waters to attack unsuspecting boaters. But other than a few bumps to the head, what danger do Asian carp really pose to Minnesota’s waters? Is it even possible to halt their invasion? What secret weapons are scientists cooking up to combat these silvery villains?

The Theater of Public Policy uses live improvisational theater to bring public policy issues and debates to life. This show features Jon Anfinson of the National Park Service (and an FMR board member) and is hosted by StopCarp.org ally Clean Water Action. 'Tunnel Valley' Restoration

Saturday, October 27 — 9:00 am-noon
Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park, Cottage Grove

Centered around one of the most impressive landscape features in southern Washington County, Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park totals nearly 600 acres. Its namesake ravine, known as "tunnel valley," was carved by a subglacial drainageway and is approximately a half-mile wide with 80- to 100-foot slopes.

Historically, the slopes were covered by oak woodland and savanna, however they've grown in with trees and invasive nonnative shrubs. Volunteers are need to work with FMR ecologist Karen Schik to begin the restoration of this beautiful landscape by hauling away pre-cut brush. Professional crews will cut down the brush prior to the event; by hauling it out, volunteers will help open the canopy, making way for more beneficial native plants to return and clearing the way for further restoration efforts.

No experience is required and all supplies, as well as lunch, will be provided.

Help restore habitat at Pine Bend Bluffs

Saturday, November 3 — 9:00 a.m.-noon
Pine Bend Bluffs near Highway 52, Flint Hills property, Rosemount

Join Friends of the Mississippi River, Flint Hills Resources and Great River Greening as we return to the Flint Hills property within the Pine Bend Bluffs Natural Area along the Mississippi River — one of the largest and most diverse native ecosystems left in the metro area. The site is owned by Flint Hills Resources and is only accessible to the public for special events such as this. This award-winning restoration project includes sand-gravel prairie, oak savanna, and oak forest plant communities. We'll be working in a black ash seepage swamp (which will be dry at this time of year), an uncommon type of habitat along the edge of Spring Lake where skunk cabbage and marsh marigold bloom in the spring.

Working with FMR and Great River Greening ecologists and staff, volunteers will remove invasive species — helping to stack pre-cut buckthorn brush — and assist with other restoration tasks. After clearing the buckthorn, we may get glimpses of the large marsh beyond. All tools and supplies will be provided, as well as lunch at the conclusion of the event. The location is roughly 25 minutes south of Minneapolis/St. Paul and 15 minutes west of Hastings. All registrants will be emailed directions to the meeting spot along with all other event basics.

Piotr Szyhalski is a world-renowned interactive designer working in interactive, installation, sound and visual media. His work has been exhibited at the Walker Art Center, the New School, New York; the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; and the Museum of Modern Art in Rijeka, Croatia. Exhibit: Guy Tillim: Avenue Patrice Lumumba

October 13 – January 5

Guy Tillim: Avenue Patrice Lumumba is an examination of modern history in Africa against the backdrop of its colonial and post-colonial architectural heritage by South African photographer Guy Tillim. Originally a photojournalist, Tillim records the architecture and infrastructure of colonial and postcolonial Africa. Tillim’s photographs use architecture, landscape and people to present the repercussion of social conflict in Africa without showing the action itself. His pictures portray the crumbling institutional buildings—post offices, schools, hotels, and offices—that were built by colonial governments in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar and Mozambique. The exhibition Guy Tillim: Avenue Patrice Lumumba has been organized by the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago.

Out of the Box and into Your Head: A Look at Television Writing, Then and Now

Television writing, from the sublime to the ridiculous, has shaped our experience of America. In the course of its nearly 60 year history, the "cool" medium has acted as both social commentary and comic relief for one of the most heterogeneous societies in history, and this presentation will attempt to come to general terms with its specific effects. From the first Golden Age of Chayefsky, Vidal and Foote to the New Golden Age of Chase and Simon and Milch, TV writers have used the intimacy of this homebound medium to do what Zola and Dickens once did, provoke empathy for "the Other." The medium's great clowns, Kovacs and Berle, Simon and Gelbart kept us laughing, even through the tears of the post-war era, and all of these scribes have taught us more than we might imagine about democracy's heart, mind, body and soul. Stephen Molton is a professor of television writing and producing at Long Island University's TV Writers Studio MFA program in Brooklyn. An author, screenwriter, producer and former HBO and Showtime executive, Molton has written books (Brave Talk, Brothers in Arms: The Kennedys, the Castros and the Politics of Murder), created mini-series and movies (Live by the Sword, Weaveworld, Stealth) and produced documentaries (L.A. Twin Cities Horror Festival

For ten days this fall, seven different groups present an exploration of the genres of horror through a multitude of performance disciplines at the 2012 Twin Cities Horror Festival at the Southern Theater. Paul Thorn Band

Paul Thorn has been pleasing crowds for years with his muscular brand of roots music -- bluesy, rocking and thoroughly Southern, yet also speaking universal truths. The Tupelo, Mississippi, native has drawn comparisons to John Hiatt and John Prine and is hailed as the ‘Mark Twain of Americana.’ Thorn was a professional boxer before sharing his experiences with the world as a singer-songwriter. His 2010 release Pimps and Preachers, which topped the Americana charts for three weeks and broke into the Billboard Top 100, perfectly exemplified the vivid scope of his songwriting and illuminated his family background. His father is a Church of God Pentecostal Minister and his uncle spent time as a pimp. Both men influenced Thorn in his formative years, and their inspiration is evident in his songwriting. On his recent release What The Hell Is Going On?, Thorn gives us his versions of songs by some of his favorite writers including Rick Danko of The Band, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Allen Toussaint, Elvin Bishop and Lindsey Buckingham. Anya Achtenberg will read from her new book Blue Earth and then Christine Stark and Gretchen Brown Wright will present essays from The Chalk Circle: International Prize Winning Essays. Blue Earth is a novel set in Minnesota where Carver Heinz loses both farm and family in the farm crisis of the 1980s. Displaced into urban Minneapolis, he becomes obsessed with Angie, a beautiful child he rescues from a tornado in an encounter he insists they keep silent. Her close friendship with a Dakota Indian boy fuels Carver’s rage and unleashes a series of events that reveal the haunting power of each character’s past and of their intertwined histories. Anya Achtenberg is an award-winning fiction writer and poet. Her publications include Blue Earth, with an excerpt in the Harvard Review, the autobiographical novella The Stories of Devil-Girl, both with Modern History Press, and The Stone of Language (poetry), published by West End Press. Award-winning editor Tara L. Masih put out a call in 2007 for Intercultural Essays dealing with the subjects of “culture, race, and a sense of place.” The prizewinners are gathered for the first time in a ground-breaking anthology, The Chalk Circle, which explores many facets of culture not previously found under one cover. The powerful, honest, thoughtful voices—Native American, African American, Asian, European, Jewish, White—speak daringly on topics not often discussed in the open, on subjects such as racism, anti-Semitism, war, self-identity, gender, societal expectations. Their words will entertain, illuminate, take you to distant lands and spark important discussions about our humanity, our culture and our place within society and the natural world. Christine Stark is an author and artist of American Indian and European heritage. Her writing has appeared in numerous publications and anthologies, including The Chalk Circle: Intercultural Prize-Winning Essays, University of Pennsylvania Law Review, Poetry Motel and When We Become Weavers: Queer Female Poets on the Midwest Experience. Get a jump on literacy in interactive preschool book arts classes with Ellen Ferrari. Children and adults work together to make paper; print patterns, shapes and letters; and construct colorful books in a fun environment. Each class begins by reading a story and continues by investigating examples produced by working artists. Vocabulary, tools and processes also will be introduced. These workshops emphasize visual decision-making, improving manual dexterity and instilling a love of books -- and can be repeated over and over again as projects change each session. Dress for mess with water-safe shoes. Register for a single class, or an entire session at a discounted rate. For children ages 3-5. NOTE: Registration for Preschool Book Arts classes closes on the Tuesday prior to each class, to give the instructor time to prepare workshop materials beforehand. Peter Campion, author of two poetry collections with the University of Chicago, The Lions and Other People, is the winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Wallace Stegner Fellowship in Poetry. Washburn A Mill Tour

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building.
