MacPhail Center for Music today announced that it has appointed Kyle Carpenter as its new chief executive officer, effective September 1, 2011. Carpenter brings 35 years of business and nonprofit board experience to the organization. He will lead MacPhail’s plans to become the nation’s premier center for music education.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Kyle to the MacPhail family. He brings strong leadership capabilities, a proven ability to grow organizations and an unwavering commitment to excellence and service,” said MacPhail board chair, Andrea Kmetz-Sheehy. “Moreover, Kyle’s enthusiasm about music and our mission, give us great confidence in his ability to lead MacPhail into new territory.”
Carpenter previously served as senior vice president for strategy and business development for Capella Education Company. In this role he established the company’s first-ever growth venture, Sophia Learning LLC, a social media teaching and learning website.
Said Carpenter, “I’m honored to join such a well-regarded and vibrant organization. MacPhail has the opportunity to expand its role as the nation’s premier center for music education. I look forward to working with the MacPhail team to spearhead the board’s vision, grow current programs and create new ones – while remaining true to the organization’s core mission.”
Carpenter’s past experiences include serving as president and CEO for Electrosonic Group, a large international digital media company, and three vice president positions with Honeywell.
In the community, he is a former board chair and trustee for Twin Cities Public Television, and a former board member of the Greater Twin Cities United Way. Carpenter also serves as a director for the Harlem Globetrotters and CompView Systems, an audio visual systems and service company.
Carpenter is an accomplished guitarist. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Management Science from Duke University. As a Honeywell employee he attended the company’s Advanced Program for Directors at Harvard University before attending the Aspen Institute (Switzerland) for International Management Development.
Carpenter replaces interim CEO Tom Moss, a former two-time MacPhail Center board member.

Only 3 1/2 weeks left to vote for the Mill City Farmers Market in the America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest. You can do so by Clicking here. Currently the St. Paul and Eagan Markets are in the lead for Minnesota, but all three are behind the national leaders. It appears Southern and Eastern Market patrons are much more involved in voting for their Markets. What gives?

Vandals removed several letters from the just dedicated 35W Bridge Remembrance Garden sometime between 8:00 AM yesterday and this morning. I received a call this morning from Star Tribune reporter Matt McKinney inquiring about a photo shoot I did early yesterday morning to see if I caught the lettering still intact. I directed Matt to a site we just launched for the memorial - http://35Wbridge.org - so he could verify.
According to McKinney, the project manager had been there earlier this morning to removed the remaining letters out of respect for survivors of the tragedy. Matt let me know that Mayor Rybak was on his way to give a statement, so I headed over to the memorial.
Yesterday morning with the letters intact:
This morning, letters removed:
