MN Legislature Greenlights Hall's Island

As the clock was ticking down on the spring 2013 session of the Minnesota Legislature, the Minnesota House approved the restoration or re-creation of "Hall's Island or such similar island," the defining feature of the future park on the Scherer site. The island must be restored within six years and "shall remain in public ownership in perpetuity and shall be maintained as a natural habitat island for birds and other wildlife."

The House authorization passed as part of the omnibus environment finance bill (H.F. 976, Section 98). Credit for this important achievement goes to many, especially the following elected officials: State Representatives Joe Mullery, Raymond Dehn, Diane Loeffler, and Phyllis Kahn; State Senators Bobby Joe Champion and Kari Dziedzic; Minneapolis City Council Members Kevin Reich and Diane Hofstede.

Water Works Design Team Announced

Across the river and downstream a bit, Water Works is seeing a lot more action, too. The Minneapolis Parks Foundation and the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board announced this month that the four-firm team of SCAPE, Rogers Marvel, James Lima Planning + Design and SRF Consulting will be the team designing the proposed park on the Central Riverfront.

Water Works is a part of RiverFirst and on a Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board-owned site located on the Central Riverfront. Water Works schematic design is concurrent with the Minneapolis Park Board’s revision of the Central Mississippi Riverfront Regional Park Master Plan; designers on these projects will work collaboratively.

Free movie Mondays in August

Our first RiverFirst movie series premieres Monday, August 5, with Chinatown. Fans of film noir and urban river enthusiasts (and the rest of us) are in for a rare big-screen viewing of the 1974 classic. Youngsters and hipsters are also in for a treat, with the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Mon, Aug 12) and Desperately Seeking Susan (Mon, Aug 19) rounding out the line-up.

Come at 7PM to enjoy dinner from one of the two on-site food trucks - or bring a picnic. Then roll out a blanket and enjoy the Minneapolis cityscape in the setting sun. Movies start 15 mins. after sunset.

RiverFirst movie events are produced the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board's Music & Movies in the Parks team, and presented by the Minneapolis Parks Foundation with support from the McKnight Foundation.

Riverfront Festival to Celebrate RiverFirst Development Site

The public and all Mississippi River enthusiasts are invited to the Riverfront Festival Friday, July 26, 2013 from 6 p.m. to sunset at “No Name” Park, the former Scherer site, located at Sibley Street and the Plymouth Avenue Bridge in Northeast Minneapolis.

The evening will include a variety of Minneapolis’ renowned food trucks, local beer, music and a suggestion box for naming the park. View the event invite here.

“We are very excited that the RiverFirst initiative is moving forward,” said Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership Interim Executive Director Kathleen Boe. “Without the enthusiastic input and support from the surrounding communities the RiverFirst initiative wouldn’t be where it is today.”

The property, purchased by the MPRB in 2010, is one of the first sites planned for development under the RiverFirst initiative. People will have the opportunity to learn about the Park’s future layout, beach, channel and the planned reconstruction of historic Hall’s Island.

“It is time to start enjoying this park and bring enthusiasm to its redevelopment. It's all about working together,” said Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Vice-President and First District Commissioner Liz Wielinski. “I am proud of the support we’ve received from the public – and especially would like thank the Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership and the East Minneapolis Exchange Club for all the hard work they have put in to this event.”

RiverFirst is a 20-year vision for Mississippi riverfront parks that builds on our community's rich river heritage and passion for parks, nature and wildlife to create places on "America’s fourth coast" where neighborhoods and businesses can grow and people from near and far can experience one of the four great rivers of the world through world-class recreational and cultural activities. The RiverFirst project area spans from the Stone Arch Bridge to the northern City of Minneapolis limit. For more information about the RiverFirst Initiative go to www.riverfirst.com.

Book Arts Roundtable: Sofa and Love $499

Friday, July 19, 7pm

Visiting artist Shana Agid uses books and printmaking as a means for homing in on physical and social landscapes, political and built environments, through explorations of space and time. In this artist talk, Shana will discuss aspects of this work with a specific focus on developing content and ideas from a range of sources (theory, visual culture, and found and made images and texts) and will discuss the ways that making the work changes the ideas at its core, so that the process of making becomes one, also, of theorizing and re-imagining both what is found and what is made. Shana Agid is a Brooklyn-based artist, writer and Assistant Professor at Parsons the New School for Design in New York, where he teaches artists’ books, service design and collaborative design. During her Spring 2012 residency at MCBA, Shana used the Vandercook SP-25 to print Call a Wrecking Ball to Make a Window, a map-fold book with original text that explores routes taken and spaces made by queer people in New York City from the 1970s through the 2000s. Agid's work focuses on relationships of power and difference, particularly regarding sexuality, race and gender in visual and political cultures. Free and open to the public.

The Nature of Dogs by Mary Ludington

July 19 – August 19

Opening reception: Friday, July 19, 6:30 – 9:30 pm

The most social and loyal of all animals, dogs are much more than simply pets. Each breed has its own beauty, grace and purpose. Plus, as the people who love them know, every dog possesses captivating elements of mystery. Mary Ludington has devoted her work over the last 15 years to discovering and capturing “the essence” of man’s and woman’s best friend. In The Nature of Dogs exhibit and accompanying book published by Simon & Schuster, Ludington presents her favorite photos of dogs, covering the full spectrum of breeds. Each photograph stands alone and speaks volumes about its subject’s unique character and behavior. Grouped together by broad canine categories (Hounds, Non-Sporting, Terriers, Herding, Sporting, Working, Toys), the photographs spotlight a striking diversity of individual dogs. To complement the portraits, evocative commentaries shed light on the origins, history and hallmarks of each featured breed. For information: http://www.mplsphotocenter.com/exhibits/upcoming-exhibits.php.

Jack Mader: Reading Material

July 19 – August 19

Opening reception: Friday, July 19, 6:30 – 9:30 pm

The books gathered for this series have been obtained from areas that were once inhabited by transients and homeless people. The books were found in carrying bags, suitcases and out in the open in and around abandoned campsites. Many of the books have spent years out in the elements of sun, rain and snow. I carefully remove the books from where I found them and bring them into my studio. There I photograph them as though they were ancient relics. These books have stories of their own to tell. Ultimately this series is a narrative about the effects of time and the elements, the essence of books, an exploration of what it is that makes a book and how someone might use a book for something other than its intended purpose. Occasionally in this series the title of the book and/or the author's name may appear in the image. This is merely a coincidence and has no effect on the narration, as the images of the books in this series are not about the story line in the text or the author.

As old bridge comes down, ArtSpace considers relocating to Hastings

“Big Blue” — the half-century old Hastings river bridge on US61 — was memorialized, bagpipes and all, at a ceremony in early June. A replacement bridge has been under construction, and is slated to be completed by the end of 2013.

A few feet upriver from the site of the memorial ceremony, the former Hudson Manufacturing Plant lies in the shadows of the US61 bridge. The older brick plant is one of a few sites being considered for a new Arts and Cultural Center in Hastings. The City of Hastings joined with non-profit developer ArtSpace to look at the potential market for such a center.

Minneapolis parks ranked #1 in the U.S.

Many of us know that the parks and parkways in Minneapolis are second to none, but now a national group has made it official, as reported recently by KARE 11. Minneapolis was chosen because of the close proximity to parks for all Minneapolis residents, but also for the tremendous regional parks that line the lakes, creeks and river. In spite of this top ranking, there is still more to do, especially along the river in north and northeast Minneapolis.

State of the River Report, a special Vermillion Stewards showing

Thursday, July 16 — 6:00-8:00 pm
Hayes Community and Senior Center, Apple Valley

How is the health of the Mississippi River? Can I safely swim in it? Is water pollution improving? Can I eat the fish I catch? What can we do about Asian carp? Do I need to be concerned about bacteria in the river? How are bald eagles faring? At FMR we hear questions like these all the time. That's why we partnered with the National Park Service's Mississippi National River and Recreation Area unit (MNRRA) to develop the "State of the River Report." The report provides a clear, concise snapshot of the health of the Mississippi River, distilling a broad range of data to zoom in on 13 key river-health indicators. It highlights the swimming, fishing, aquatic life and emerging contamination issues facing the river as well as priority solutions for each. Since its release last fall, the report has served as a framework for addressing state water issues; several problems and solutions addressed in the report (such as issues with the common hand sanitizer triclosan) have received heightened media and legislative attention.

Capacity is limited and registration required. Learn more on the event page, or sign up now with Lindsay at lhefferan@fmr.org or 651-222-2193 x24.

Quote of the Month

“With so many trees in the city, you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. This was the only truly sad time in Paris because it was unnatural. You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintry light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason.

In those days, though, the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.”

        - Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast
