The Myth of Bassett’s Creek

Another great, in-depth article by David C. Smith, author of City of Parks: The Story of Minneapolis Parks.

From Minneapolis Park History:

I heard again recently the old complaint that north Minneapolis would be a different place if Bassett’s Creek had gotten the same treatment as Minnehaha Creek. Another story of neglect. Another myth.

You can find extensive information on the history of Bassett’s Creek online: a thorough account of the archeology of the area surrounding Bassett’s Creek near the Mississippi River by Scott Anfinson at From Site to Story — must reading for anyone who has even a passing interest in Mississippi River history; a more recent account of the region in a very good article by Meleah Maynard in City Pages in 2000; and, the creek’s greatest advocate, Dave Stack, provides info on the creek at the Friends of Bassett Creek , as well as updates on a Yahoo group site. Follow the links from the “Friends” site for more detailed information from the city and other sources.

What none of those provided to my satisfaction, however, was perspective on Bassett’s Creek itself after European settlement. A search of Minneapolis Tribune articles and Minneapolis City Council Proceedings, added to other sources, provides a clearer picture of the degree of degradation of Bassett’s Creek – mostly in the context of discussions of the city’s water supply. This was several years before the creation of the Minneapolis Board of Park Commissioners in 1883 — a time when Minnehaha Creek was still two miles outside of Minneapolis city limits. The region around the mouth of Bassett’s Creek was an economic powerhouse and an environmental disaster at a very early date — a mix that has never worked well for park acquisition and development.

More on the War Against Asian Carp - The Asian Carp Summit [Video]

From KARE 11:

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The battle to protect Minnesota's waterways from invasive carp species will have to be a team effort, according to Gov. Mark Dayton. That's why he summoned the state's top aquatic life experts to the Capitol Friday for what he dubbed an Asian Carp Summit. The future of the state's $2 billion fishing industry is at stake, as well as the survival of some native species.

Student Design Forum: Reuses for 10 Endangered Minnesota Properties

Tuesday, November 29, 6:30 pm

Landmark Center, 75 West Fifth Street, Weyerhauser Auditorium, Saint Paul

Join the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota (PAM) on November 29 as undergraduate architecture students from the University of Minnesota course – “Saving Minnesota: 10 Buildings at a Time” -- present their adaptive reuse proposals for 10 of Minnesota’s endangered buildings. The subject properties have been selected from PAM’s 2011 10 Most Endangered Historic Places list and include the Pillsbury “A” Mill in Minneapolis, Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center in Fergus Falls and the Mayowood Historic District in Rochester. The students are part of the Bachelor of Design in Architecture program at the University of Minnesota’s College of Design. The heritage preservation workshop is taught by adjunct instructor Michael Bjornberg, AIA, of HGA. When students selected sites, they were asked to consider the local community and its needs to ensure that their design proposals had a real-world application. To encourage the next generation of preservation-minded designers and citizens, PAM is offering a free one-year membership to any registered college students in the audience who show a student ID. This night is envisioned as an opportunity for both students and design professionals to network, explore creative reuse concepts and discuss career opportunities. The 8:45 p.m. networking event will follow the presentations (held at Landmark Center from 6:30-8:30 p.m.) at the new Amsterdam Bar & Hall in St. Paul for light hors d’oeuvres and beverages for purchase. This is a free event and is generously sponsored by Target. For more information, visit www.mnpreservation.org. All attendees are encouraged to RSVP online at www.mnpreservation.org/rsvp or by calling Will O’Keefe at 651-293-9047.

Holy Cow! Press Reading: Anthony Bukoski, Ann Iverson and Catherine Holm

Thursday, December 8, 7 pm

In his fourth collection, Anthony Bukoski brings to life once again the working-class town of Superior, Wisconsin, telling linked tales of its Polish inhabitants in 13 poignant, well-crafted stories. Anthony Bukoski has published five story collections, including Twelve Below Zero: New and Expanded Edition (Holy Cow! Press, 2008). National Public Radio’s Selected Shorts program has aired readings of Bukoski’s work. A Christopher Isherwood Foundation fellowship winner, the author resides with his wife Elaine in a rural area outside of Superior, Wisconsin. Art Lessons by Ann Iverson explores the connections between visual art and the written word. By incorporating the words and details from Vincent Van Gogh's life, and by referring to his famous sunflower paintings, Ann Iverson's poetry reveals her keen insights into the mysterious interplay between art and poetry, happiness and sadness, God and nature. Ann Iverson is the author of Definite Space (Holy Cow! Press, 2007). Her poems have appeared on The Writer’s Almanac. She is a dean of learning at Dunwoody College in Minneapolis and lives in East Bethel, Minnesota, with her husband. My Heart is a Mountain: Tales of Magic and the Land by Catherine Holm is a collection of 11 fiction stories and one memoir piece. From northern Minnesota to Alaska, from the Dustbowl to Appalachia, from swamps to mountains to the afterlife, these tales blend the magic and the mundane as characters discover themselves, their limitations and their greatness. Catherine Holm is an award-winning writer who lives with her husband Chris in rural Cook, Minnesota, on ten acres of boreal forest. Her short stories have been published in several anthologies and chapbooks. She writes about human yearning and how it is shaped by land and place.

"Tracking Minnesota’s Clean Water Legacy Effectiveness"

Friday, December 16, 8 -- 9:30 am

McKnight Foundation, 710 Second Street South, Suite 400

Minnesotans want to know if our water is getting cleaner and how Clean Water Funds are being spent. These questions and many others are being addressed by a multi-agency team whose goal is to develop a clean water tracking framework that will help clarify the connections between funds invested, actions taken and clean water outcomes achieved. The heart of the Framework is a suite of 36 quantifiable performance measures that tell a cohesive, meaningful story about Minnesota's water bodies, watershed and groundwater health and the actions of agencies and partners working to restore and protect Minnesota's waters. This presentation by Andy Holdsworth (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources) and Suzanne Hanson (Minnesota Pollution Control Agency) will describe the Framework and the related “Clean Water Performance Report,” to be released in February 2012. Transit and parking information are available at http://www.mcknight.org/about/offices.aspx. Light breakfast provided. Free. A National Theatre Live FILMED PRESENTATION of

Collaborators

A new play by John Hodge

Monday, January 9, 7:30 pm

Guthrie Theater, 818 Second Street South, McGuire Proscenium Stage

Moscow, 1938. A dangerous place to have a sense of humor; even more so a sense of freedom. Mikhail Bulgakov, living among dissidents, stalked by secret police, has both. And then he's offered a poisoned chalice: a commission to write a play about Stalin to celebrate his 60th birthday. Inspired by historical fact, Collaborators embarks on surreal journey into the fevered imagination of the writer as he loses himself in a macabre and disturbingly funny relationship with the omnipotent subject of his drama.  For information and tickets: http://www.guthrietheater.org/whats_happening/events/2011/nt_live_collaborators

Minnesota Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit Report

Revitalizing communities, stimulating job growth and increasing the tax base are the goals of the Minnesota Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit, which was signed into law in April 2010. A report to the State Legislature about the economic impact of projects leveraged by the first year of the tax credit is now ready, and it shows a bright spot in an otherwise challenging economic landscape. The report describes job creation benefits, particularly within the construction industry, as well as educational and community-building aspects of preserving our historic past. The report is available online at http://www.mnhs.org/shpo/grants/docs_pdfs/Economic_Impact-Historic_Tax_Credit_2011.pdf. The Minnesota Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit allows for eligible property owners to receive a state income tax credit of up to 20% of qualifying expenses or a grant in lieu of the credit. The state tax credit works in combination with a federal 20% tax credit. In the first year of the credit, which ended June 30, 2011, 14 projects received approval. (Additional projects outside the scope of the report are underway.) The report was prepared by the University of Minnesota Extension Center for Community Vitality.

Mississippi River Plays Starring Role in Greater MSP Video

Friday
Nov182011

4,000 Tons of Rock are Being Dropped Into a Gouge in the Mississippi River Bottom in Downtown Minneapolis.

From the Star Tribune:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to wrap up a project near downtown Minneapolis on Friday, and only a few fish may notice the difference.

But officials say the work -- filling a 12-foot-deep, 100-foot wide "scour," or gouge, in the bottom of the Mississippi River -- will alleviate a threat to the stability of the Lower St. Anthony Lock and Dam and a hydroelectric power plant being built on it.

Art in Public Places Sound Points

Multiple locations, including Tilted Bowl Fountain and I-35W Remembrance Garden

Public art celebrates the unique identity of Minneapolis neighborhoods, contributes to the livability of downtown and enriches the experiences of visitors, residents and workers in the city. Over the last two years more than one dozen works of art have been commissioned by and donated to the city. In collaboration with Minnesota Public Radio’s SOUND POINT™ project, the City of Minneapolis presents an audio cell phone tour featuring recently completed public artworks and interviews with the artists who created them. The tour highlights a range of artworks, including an artist-designed baseball backstop, a blooming bus shelter and a memorial to the 35W bridge collapse. A map available at http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/dca/docs/soundpoints.pdf directs viewers through a self-guided tour of 13 different works across the city. Signs posted at each artwork location will direct viewers to call or text a phone number or scan a QR code with their smart phone and listen to the artist describe the artwork in detail. Viewers also will have the opportunity to leave a text or verbal message describing their own impressions of the work or share a story about their neighborhood with journalists via MPR’s community-powered Public Insight Network.

PIONEER PRESS EXAMINES EFFECTIVENESS OF CLEAN WATER LEGACY FUNDS

With no authority to compel agribusiness polluters to clean up their act, can our state be successful in doing our part to pass a clean and healthy Mississippi River on to the next generation? Reporter Dennis Lien tackles this and other essential questions in a recent Pioneer Press article on the impact of clean-water funding through the Legacy Amendment. “[W]ith the earliest Legacy spending decisions already up for scrutiny, clean-water advocates are studying the projects under a microscope. Their early reviews say government often lacks the authority, once water-cleanup plans are prepared, to require improvements or to penalize polluters.”

7-ACRE HIGH BRIDGE DOG PARK TO OPEN IN ST. PAUL

A long-awaited off-leash dog park will open in spring 2012, as reported in the October 26th Star Tribune. The park — the second in the city — will be just below the downtown side of the Smith Avenue High Bridge, just west of the Upper Landing development along the riverfront.

The 7-acre dog park will be on land formerly occupied by the Xcel Energy High Bridge Coal Plant. Xcel demolished the plant in 2008, replacing it with a much cleaner natural gas facility just west of the site.

A third dog park is being planned for a site on the opposite side of the river and upriver a half-mile in Lilydale Regional Park. Its development timeline has not yet been established.

Slideshow / Great River Outing: Gems Along the Mississippi River Trail with the Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership

A walk with park historian David Smith, Commissioner Liz Wielinski, and Marshall Terrace resident and AFCAC co-facilitator Mary Jamin Maguire visited three riverfront park gems: Marshall Terrace, Edgewater, and Gluek Riverside.

We followed Marshall Street, formerly the Red River Oxcart Trail, and now the multi-state Mississippi River Trail. We discussed the Above the Falls and the MRDI River First plans to complete a continuous riverfront park with walking/biking trails, connecting these riverfront parks. On the route were the Lowry Bridge and the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization headquarters - both currently under construction. We concluded with a visit to the Sample Room for a treat and conversation.
