Real Ghost Tours is not a gory haunted house experience - it's a history-packed tour during which you'll learn about (and maybe encounter the spirits of) people who shaped this area.  Visit the website and Facebook for more information.

Private tours can be arranged for groups of 15 or more.  The $25 per person fee includes parking, plus a voucher for 25% off at your choice of Pracna, Vic's or Tuggs.

During the tour you'll explore areas of the building that are otherwise off limits, using an EMF meter (a scientific instrument for measuring electromagnetic fields, and the prime sensory instrument of any ghost investigation).

July 14, 2011, Thursday - Twin Cities River Rats Show

The 2011 Twin Cities River Rats season kicked off Thursday, June 2.  Shows are scheduled for 7pm Thursday nights through August 25, and take place at 1628 West River Road (between the Plymouth and Broadway).

The Twin Cities Rivers Rats describe their show as an aquatic Broadway musical featuring multiple water ski acts choreographed to music and built around a theme.

If you haven't already enjoyed a River Rats show, their website is loaded with fun videos to give you an idea of what to expect.  These are free events.

The Twin Cities’ most explosive outdoor concert series is back for an eighth season with a slate of bands curated by music writer Jim Walsh. Featuring legendary performers from the heyday of the Minneapolis sound, these concerts will riff on American music in a gorgeous riverfront setting every Thursday from July 7 through Aug. 18. Exploring the world of backup dancers without their leading stars, Chris Yon presents ECHO PARK Dream Ballet Essay:Les Sylphides without Margot Fonteyn v. The Pips without Gladys Knight. Set to an original mashup soundscape of classical and R&B music, the six dancers traverse a kinetically quotable movement landscape based on variations of familiar ‘step-touch’ routines and other standard chorus vocabulary.

Kenna Cottman
Kenna Cottman (aka Sarge) is widely known for her West African and hip-hop fusion techniques. With Shared Language, Cottman explores the conflict in her own cultural identity, collaborating with Senegalese griot (storyteller/musician) Backa Niang to combine oral language traditions with a new movement vocabulary derived from Senegalese sabar dance, Guinee djembe dance and a more contemporary take on her own style.

Kaleena Miller
Inspired by her father’s journey into the depths of Alzheimer’s, Kaleena Miller’s Fleet explores the aural and visual interpretation of the disease as a percussive dance piece set to live music. Utilizing a more modern, urban sensibility on the traditional views of tap dance, Miller’s variance of sound and visual aesthetics creates a dense and dark percussive sound that leaves the audience affected, yet hopeful.

Mad King Thomas – Tara King, Theresa Madhaus, Monica Thomas
Bouncing between a multitude of potential titles including If We Just Put Sparkles On It, All Our Troubles Will Go Away and Glitter Tits and the Glitteration Band, movement trio Mad King Thomas presents a new piece for “more than 3, and probably less than 25” people about agency and power in a culture of spectacle. Known for their sense of humor and delight in irreverence, Mad King Thomas is invested in the possibilities of live performance opening up discussion, igniting revolution and subverting the status quo, as well as expanding what the definitions of dance, performance, or art might be. This new work draws its inspiration from a love of bicycles, sparkles, and women and finds its influence in the past 100 years of culture including suffragettes, Eleanor Roosevelt, Guy Dubord, Ziegfield Follies, and female movie stars.

Discover the richness of Minneapolis history, and slake your thirst with some fine beverages along a single road: Washington Avenue. Travel down this busy but underappreciated street to see the importance of railroads, warehousing, flour milling,, immigration, entertainment, and vice to the story of the Mill City.  A trolley will take participants through the neighborhoods along Washington from 35W to Plymouth, with stops at significant historic places and two watering holes in historic buildings. Ages 21 and up only. Drink purchases are not included in the tour price. Drink specials will be made available at participating locations.

Beginning with the arrival of Minnesota’s first rail line in 1862, Minneapolis boomed in population, flour milling, lumber production and warehousing as a rail network extended throughout the Upper Midwest. Take a guided tour to discover the impact of railroads on the Mill City, visiting railroad landmarks such as the Stone Arch Bridge, Milwaukee Road Depot and the Minneapolis Eastern Railway engine house & trestle. Along the way, find clues to the vanishing railroad landscape and learn about the new rail era that is arriving with the Hiawatha light rail and the North Star commuter rail. The tour will begin and end at Mill City Museum, where participants can visit the museum’s gallery, included in the price of the tour.

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building on a guided tour of the building. A museum interpreter will take visitors into the building’s many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time. Also covered will be how the mill ruin was converted to a museum and office building.

Although many parts of the A mill can be explored on a self-guided basis during a regular museum visit, this is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building, and the only chance to see some of its non-public spaces. The tour includes admission to the museum gallery as well as the Flour Tower show.
