Family Riverfront Quest Tour at Mill City Museum

Try out questing with a family-focused tour of the Minneapolis riverfront outside Mill City Museum. A Quest is a community treasure hunt that guides people through, and teaches them to see, a unique part of their community. This quest includes solving rhyming riddles and searching for hidden boxes with pictures to place in a quest journal that participants can make before the tour. Journal materials and admission to Mill City Museum are included in the tour cost. The tour is designed for ages 6–11, but can be enjoyed by all ages. Adults and seniors must be accompanying a child.

Fee: $11 adults, $9 seniors, $10 ages 6-17, $7 MHS Members ages 6-17, Free for Adult and Senior MHS members

The 2012 Twin Cities River Rats shows are scheduled for 7pm Thursday nights through August 30, and take place at 1628 West River Road (between the Plymouth and Broadway).

The Twin Cities Rivers Rats describe their show as an aquatic Broadway musical featuring multiple water ski acts choreographed to music and built around a theme.

An evening of local forces in jazz and rhythm-driven dance exploring improvisation.

Now in its fourth year, the Rhythmically Speaking production has become an anticipated annual staple of the Twin Cities dance scene, bringing the community a taste of the area's best jazz and rhythm-driven choregoraphers. Rhythmically Speaking 2012 employs a key element of both music and dance - improvisation - as a catalyst to bring together the individual creative works in the show.

The production will feature voice-over vignettes of choreographers discussing how they utilize improvisation within their creation processes, giving viewers a peek into how they work. From Hip Hop to 60's-influenced jazz to Afro-funk, the 2012 choreographers each bring their own unique style-standpoint on how improvisation can inform the creation of dance.

August 16 - 18, all performances 8:00pm.

Set in the museum's dramatic open air Ruin Courtyard, Mill City Live features four evenings of outdoor music every Wednesday night from August 8 through 29.

The Melismatics have been winning fans with their live shows since they released their debut album "Postmodern Rock" nearly a decade ago. Their 2012 release "MANIA!" was produced by Jon Auer of The Posies and Big Star, along with Ed Ackerson (Motion City Soundtrack, Golden Smog, The Replacements) and was mixed by John Fields (Jimmy Eat World, Rooney, Har Mar Superstar, etc). Grammy-winning songwriter Dan Wilson co-wrote one of the tracks.Visit Mill City Museum before or after the show, the $5 concert fee includes admission to the museum from 4 to 9 p.m. Food and drink is available for purchase by D’Amico Catering.

Important Native American sites are spread throughout Minneapolis. Richard LaFortune will present a survey of ancestral domains including traditional settlements, burial grounds, treaty sites, trails and other places of Native American significance. In its traditional sense, historic preservation is based on the physical permanence of the architecture signifying the European immigrant-based culture. Richard will share how the architecture of native people arises from the earth.

This free event is part of Preserve Minneapolis' Breakfast With a Preservationist series.

For families with children ages 2-10

Come and meet two artists in When Pigasso met Mootisse by Nina Laden. Learn to make paper with white cotton pulp, then "paint" your masterpieces with paper pulp in a rainbow of colors. Use colorful yarn and eye droppers for added artistic effects. "Art Opening" snacks will be served! Water-safe shoes are suggested.

Join Ellen Ferrari for Tuesday mornings of family book arts fun! Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity and then dives into a book arts project. Workshops accommodate a range of developmental levels so that adults and children (or adult/child teams) may choose to work together or side-by-side. Each participant receives supplies to use during the workshop, but may choose to bring one set home if working with his or her partner. Ellen will provide older children with suggestions for extending their learning.

$30 ($27 members) per adult/child pair; $15 ($14) each additional participant.

August 12, 2012, Sunday - Railroad History Tour at Mill City Museum

Location:  Mill City Museum, 704 South 2nd Street

Beginning with the arrival of Minnesota’s first rail line in 1862, Minneapolis boomed in population, flour milling, lumber production and warehousing as a rail network extended throughout the Upper Midwest. Take a guided tour to discover the impact of railroads on the Mill City, visiting railroad landmarks such as the Stone Arch Bridge, Milwaukee Road Depot and the Minneapolis Eastern Railway engine house and trestle. Along the way find clues to the vanishing railroad landscape and learn about the future of Twin Cities rail. The tour will begin and end at Mill City Museum, where participants can visit the museum’s gallery, included in the price of the tour.

Fee: $14 adults, $12 seniors and college students, $10 children ages 6-17 and MHS members. Includes museum admission.
