Moreechika: Season of Mirage
Choreogrpaher Ananya Chatterjea recently named "Favorite Minnesota Role Model for Women in the Arts" by the Minnessota Women's Press, and her company, Ananya Dance Theatre (ADT), will present the United States premiere of Moreechika: Season of Mirage. The work will receive its world premiere in July at the "New Waves! 2012" festival in Port of Spain, Trinidad, presented by the New Waves! Commission Project for the international Choregorpahers, Commission Program (ICCP).
The theme of Moreechika, an evening-length piece, is oil and the environmental, cultural and human costs of oil extraction around the world, particularly on women in global communities of color.
Moreechika is the third work in a four-part investigation into violence, trauma, resistance and empowerment experienced by communities of color, using the elements of mud (Kshoy!/Decay!, 2010), gold (Tushaanal: Fires of Dry Grass, 2011), oil (Moreechika: Season of Mirage, 2012) and water (Mohona: Estuaries of Desire, 2013) as themes.
