August 7, 2012, Tuesday - Let's Go from A to Z! with Ellen Ferrari at MCBA

Time: 10:00am-12:00pm

Location: Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1011 Washington Avenue South

Let's Go from A to Z! with Ellen Ferrari

For families with children ages 2-10

The Turn-Around, Upside-Down Alphabet Book by Lisa Campbell Ernst will introduce the sillier side of our 26 letters, and then we will all help to create our own silly 26 letter stamps to print on the printing press. Print ABC broadsides and turn them into cards, books and magnets. Plus, practice your letters with alphabet cookies!

Join Ellen Ferrari for Tuesday mornings of family book arts fun! Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity and then dives into a book arts project. Workshops accommodate a range of developmental levels so that adults and children (or adult/child teams) may choose to work together or side-by-side. Each participant receives supplies to use during the workshop, but may choose to bring one set home if working with his or her partner. Ellen will provide older children with suggestions for extending their learning.

$30 ($27 members) per adult/child pair; $15 ($14) each additional participant

Register for this workshop.

August 4, 2012, Saturday - Talking Image Connection for Hedge Magic at The Soap Factory

Time: 8:00pm

Location: Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE

Talking Image Connection for Hedge Magic brings together writers, contemporary art and new audiences in art galleries around the Twin Cities.

A group exhibition drawn from our annual artist submissions, with artists examining issues of transformation, interpretation, reclamation and the super-natural.

Participating artists: Chris Lawrence, David Hamlow, Jess Hirsch, Amy Reckley, Meredith Foster, Peter Goché, Keith Lemley.

Selected as part of The Soap Factory’s annual submissions program, the artists in Hedge Magic all look at the processes of transformation through the super-natural lens of art, with the artist as the interrogator of the secret process of nature and culture. As an industrial building, The Soap Factory acted as a nexus of transformation between the various states of matter; artists take this alchemical process further into a transformation of states of being.

Peter Goché takes the natural forms of the Mississippi ox-bow, forms made over millennia, and transforms them into sinuous sculptures of crafted wood. Meredith Foster also looks to the ageless river for her inspiration, drawing out the river and its landscape through water and ash. Keith Lemley works with wood and neon, using the ancient timber of The Soap Factory to create an illuminated arbor, while Amy Reckley gathers material from the building and its environs for an explosion of sculptural gesture. Chris Lawrence arranges objects into patterns that evoke the hidden occult geometries of the gallery space. Jess Hirsch takes abandoned and forg Talking Image Connection brings together writers, contemporary art and new audiences in art galleries around the Twin Cities. otten furniture and transforms them into sculpture, changing them beyond recognition, and then re-presents them to their original owners. David Hamlow takes the refuse and detritus of our commercial life and fashions this material as building blocks for his own interpretive structures.

Hedge Magic is magic that is practiced without regard for the mediation or the control of a higher power. This non-Hermetic practice uses intuition and inspiration, gathering and interpreting found materials. It is at once intimate and more encompassing, recognizing the importance of the chaotic detail that creates the whole.

August 4, 2012, Saturday - The Bane of Your Resistance—Around the Writer's Block at The Loft

Tme:  6:00pm

Location: The Loft, Performance Hall, 1011 Washington Avenue South

The Bane of Your Resistance—Around the Writer's Block

Join Rosanne Bane and the Loft for an evening of brain games, fun, and prizes as we investigate this thing we call “Writer’s Block.”  Rosanne’s new book Around The Writer’s Block hits bookstores in August and she is excited to engage you in the science behind writer’s resistance.

- Want to write more (more often, more freely, more effectively) but just can’t get started and keep going?
- Allow worry over criticism or rejection to keep you from writing?
- Remember ten other things that you must do whenever you get ready to write?
- Have great ideas while driving or in the shower, but go blank when you sit down at the keyboard?
- Sabotage your own best efforts with excessive self-criticism, missed deadlines, lost files, and lost opportunities?
- If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, the good news is that you can stop blaming yourself and learn what’s happening inside your brain to overcome resistance and develop a better writing habit.

Games and activities begin at 6:00pm, with a reading from the book at 7:00pm and a reception to follow.  Please RSVP.

If you don't RSVP, don't think you can't stop by—the planning committee just wants an estimate so we can be sure to have enough cake and prizes!

THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
