May 17, 2013, Friday - Mentor Series Reading: David Small at The Loft

Tme: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft, Performance Hall, 1011 Washington Avenue South

Mentor Series Reading: David Small

The 2012-2013 Loft Mentor Series in Poetry and Creative Prose presents nonfiction mentor David Small reading along with program participants Ruby Pediangco (fiction) and Lin Salisbury (nonfiction).

Ruby Pediangco is the wife of an exceedingly supportive husband and together they have two very bright and funny children. An attorney by training, she works as the Director of Planned Giving for the Minnesota Orchestra. She began writing stories in her 1981 Judy Blume Diary and has continued writing in her spare time ever since. Her goal is to have a story published in a literary journal to share with her kids one day.

Lin Salisbury holds a BA from the University of Minnesota in Creative Writing. Her work has appeared in Snowshoemag.com, Minnesota Memories, and Fourth Genre. She is a Community Relations Manager for Barnes & Noble.

David Small was born and raised in Detroit. He earned an MFA from the Yale Graduate School of Art. He has illustrated over 40 picture books and has received the Caldecott Medal and The Christopher Medal. His graphic memoir, Stitches, was a finalist for the 2009 National Book Award. Stitches tells the story of Small's journey from sickly child to cancer patient, to the troubled teen who made a risky decision to run away from home at sixteen—with nothing more than the dream of becoming an artist. He and his wife, author Sarah Stewart, make their home in a historic manor house in southwest Michigan.

THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

May 17, 2013, Friday - Opening Reception for Directed: The Intersection of Book, Film and Visual Narrative at MCBA

Time: 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Location: Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1011 Washington Avenue South

Directed: The Intersection of Book, Film and Visual Narrative
May 17 - August 4, 2013

Opening reception: Friday, May 17; 6-9pm
Book Art Biennial and The MCBA Prize Gala: Saturday, July 27

Directed: The Intersection of Book, Film and Visual Narrative explores in depth the common territory of two engaging artistic practices: book arts and film. Historically as well as in contemporary practice, artists blur and perforate the boundaries between these two disciplines, both of which share a foundation of sequential visual narrative.

Work by over 70 artists will be featured, representing a diverse cross-section of contemporary work from across disciplines and around the world. The exhibition also includes many influential artists' books from the Walker Art Center's Rosemary Furtak Collection, including works by Ed Ruscha, Jim Goldberg, Marcel Broodthaers, John Baldessari, Andy Warhol, Christian Boltanski, Bruce Nauman, Michael Snow, Mason Douglas Williams, Gilbert & George, and Annette Messager. Directed is presented as part of Book Art Biennial 2013.

Directed is presented as part of MCBA's 2013 Book Art Biennial. Through workshops, lectures, conversations and exhibitions, MCBA’s Book Art Biennial invites artists, educators, curators and scholars to explore current issues in contemporary artists’ books. The centerpiece of the Book Art Biennial is the presentation of The MCBA Prize. This award is the first to recognize book art from across the field and around the world, celebrating the incredible diversity of this vital artform. Submission guidelines for The MCBA Prize competition will be released in early 2013. For more information, visit our Biennial or MCBA Prize webpages.

May 16, 2013, Thursday - New Exhibit Opening at Mill City Museum

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 South Second Street

Opening Exhibit:  We Are Still Here: Photographs of the American Indian Movement

Opens May 16, 2013 We Are Still Here: Photographs of the American Indian Movement The American Indian Movement, founded in 1968 in Minneapolis, burst into that turbulent time with passion, anger and radical acts of resistance. Spurred by the Civil Rights movement, Native people began to protest the decades—centuries—of corruption, racism and abuse they had endured. They argued for political, social, and cultural change and they got attention.

The photographs of activist Dick Bancroft, a key documentarian of AIM, provide a stunningly intimate view of this major piece of American history from 1970 to 1981. The unofficial photographer of AIM since 1970, Bancroft joined them for key events such as the takeovers of federal buildings, the founding of survival schools in the Twin Cities, the Wounded Knee trials, The Longest Walk of Survival and bringing American Indian voices to the United Nations. The exhibit will include photographs from the book and as well as unpublished images.

May 14, 2013, Tuesday - Washington Avenue Public Input Meeting at Mill City Museum

Time: 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 South 2nd Street

A public meeting will be held on May 14, 2013, to seek public input on urban design features including bicycle and pedestrian facilities, streetscaping, parking, and overall integration of these elements along the Washington Avenue corridor. All residents, businesses, property owners and other interested stakeholders are encouraged to attend.

A previous public meeting was held in December 2012 where input was received on existing conditions, challenges, opportunities, and preliminary alternatives. The purpose of this second public meeting is to gain public input on project recommendations and alternative urban design concepts. An on-line survey will also be conducted following the public meeting to gather additional public input on the project recommendations.

Project overview

Hennepin County, in coordination with the City of Minneapolis, is preparing for the reconstruction of Washington Avenue South (County Road 152) between Hennepin Avenue and 5th Avenue South. The project is in the early stages of the project development process and construction is anticipated in 2014.

Hennepin Avenue to 5th Avenue South will remain the limits for the proposed reconstruction project. The concept plans will be used to generate a preliminary layout on which the detailed design for the project will be based.

5th Avenue South to I-35W is not identified as a reconstruction project at this time. However, the concept plans will provide guidance as future projects are identified and as funding becomes available.

May 13, 2013, Monday - Vikings Stadium Preliminary Design Reveal at the Guthrie

Time: 7:00pm

Per Richard Meryhew's April 27 post on the StarTrib:

Excerpts from the article:

...architects plan to deliver the goods by unveiling the preliminary design for the nearly billion-dollar stadium in a 7 p.m. showing at the Guthrie Theater.

“We’ll go through all the details of the building inside and out,” said Michele Kelm-Helgen, chairwoman of the authority, which is overseeing construction of the project, to be built on the Metrodome site.

Stadium groundbreaking is still expected to take place in October, even though revenues for the state’s portion of construction financing are lagging well behind projections. The Metrodome is tentatively scheduled to be razed in early 2014 with the new stadium scheduled to open in time for the 2016 NFL season. In the meantime, Vikings home games will be at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus.
