May 17, 2013, Friday - Opening Reception for Directed: The Intersection of Book, Film and Visual Narrative at MCBA

Time: 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Location: Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1011 Washington Avenue South

Directed: The Intersection of Book, Film and Visual Narrative
May 17 - August 4, 2013

Opening reception: Friday, May 17; 6-9pm
Book Art Biennial and The MCBA Prize Gala: Saturday, July 27

Directed: The Intersection of Book, Film and Visual Narrative explores in depth the common territory of two engaging artistic practices: book arts and film. Historically as well as in contemporary practice, artists blur and perforate the boundaries between these two disciplines, both of which share a foundation of sequential visual narrative.

Work by over 70 artists will be featured, representing a diverse cross-section of contemporary work from across disciplines and around the world. The exhibition also includes many influential artists' books from the Walker Art Center's Rosemary Furtak Collection, including works by Ed Ruscha, Jim Goldberg, Marcel Broodthaers, John Baldessari, Andy Warhol, Christian Boltanski, Bruce Nauman, Michael Snow, Mason Douglas Williams, Gilbert & George, and Annette Messager. Directed is presented as part of Book Art Biennial 2013.

Directed is presented as part of MCBA's 2013 Book Art Biennial. Through workshops, lectures, conversations and exhibitions, MCBA’s Book Art Biennial invites artists, educators, curators and scholars to explore current issues in contemporary artists’ books. The centerpiece of the Book Art Biennial is the presentation of The MCBA Prize. This award is the first to recognize book art from across the field and around the world, celebrating the incredible diversity of this vital artform. Submission guidelines for The MCBA Prize competition will be released in early 2013. For more information, visit our Biennial or MCBA Prize webpages.
