February 19, 2015, Thursday - EDC Business Forum at Aloft Hotel

Time: 11:30am to 1:00pm

Location: Aloft Hotel – 900 Washington Avenue South

The title of this month’s forum is “Access and Equality: The Convergences of Economic Vitality and Human Flourishing.”  This will be a panel discussion featuring City and business leaders.

Registration, lunch and networking starts at 11:30 a.m., with the EDC Update and guest presenters starting at Noon. The cost to attend the forum is just $20. You can pay by cash or check at the door. Please RSVP by sending an email to info@edcmpls.org by no later than Monday, February 16, at Noon.

Forum Description

In Mayor Betsy Hodges’ 2014 Inaugural and State of the City addresses she set three priorities for Minneapolis: grow the city to 500,000 residents, continue to run it with efficiency, and eliminate the gaps that hold us back.

Regarding the elimination of gaps she said:  “There are and will be many detailed policy prescriptions to come about ending these gaps — about housing and transportation, employment and health, kids before they’re born and kids while they’re in school….

…A recent Met Council study shows that…if Minneapolis–Saint Paul were to eliminate our disparities, we could have 274,000 fewer people in poverty, 171,000 more high school diplomas, and 124,000 more people with jobs. And in terms of economic growth? We would pick up 31.8 billion dollars of personal income that we are otherwise leaving on the table.”

This business forum will feature seasoned voices discussing public policy, education, housing, and equity labor as key means to transform the economic potential of our city. Key questions addressed will be:
•“In what ways do the City of Minneapolis’ economic policies shape the landscape of business opportunities?
•“How can quality schools and well-prepared youth create a strong commuinity?”
•“What is equity labor and why is it needed in this moment of Minneapolis’ history?”
•“What are the various kinds of affordable housing development options in Minneapolis and how does a diverse housing inventory assist in creating a more stable social fabric?”

Forum Agenda
•Welcome and Introductions, Paul Mellblom, President EDC, Dan Collison, Executive Director EDC (10 Minutes)
•Ryan Companies/Wells Fargo Update, Tony Barranco, Ryan Construction (5 Minutes)
•Panel Discussion (25 Minutes)
•Q & A Moderated by Dan Collison (5 Minutes)
•Preview of the March EDC Forum (5 Minutes)

February 18, 2015, Wednesday - Work Redux | Mentorship at Red Stag Supperclub

Time: 7:30am to 10:00am

Location: Red Stag Supperclub, 509 1st Avenue Northeast

Work Redux brings individuals across diverse areas of thought leadership to discuss how the workforce, which was historically designed around a male breadwinner, needs to be reexamined to support a new era of increasingly female leadership. We know the future of leadership must look gender-equal. But what microactions can we take to build and redesign the workplace to better support new points of view?

Work Redux inspires questions, sparks discussion, and drives action to challenge cultural assumptions behind the current, dominate work culture. Together we will better understand how we can design the future of work.

For February’s event, we’ll dissect the online featured conversation we started with Kate Barr, Executive Director of Nonprofits Assistance Fund, and build a lively in-person discussion around the role of mentorship in creating and supporting more female leaders. Kate knows first-hand the importance of having a good mentor to guide you as your career develops and she has since stepped up to pay it forward and support other local sector leaders in their journeys. Join us as we welcome Kate along with her mentor, Julia Classen, and mentees, DeAnna Cummings and Dana Nelson, to explore these tricky, messy, and fabulous aspects of mentorship.

We encourage attenedees to also invite a guest—one of their mentors or mentees. Let's make this breakfast more than just a discussion, but also an opportunity to deepen relationships and renew momentum around mentorship in our own lives.

Location: The Loft Literary Center, at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave

Buddhism in Daily Life

How can 2,500 year old teachings on mind be useful for busy and productive Westerners in modern times? What benefit does a 20 minute meditation session have for people too distracted by the overwhelming and never-ending inbox?

Though Buddhism, evokes images of peaceful monks, and serene retreats, the Buddha's practical and relevant advice, can be used in the here and now, without exotic pretenses, and with massive benefits to those who wish to bring benefit to themselves and the world around them.
--
Presented by the Diamond Way Buddhist Center of Minneapolis, "Buddhism in Daily Life," is an introduction to Buddhism and provides context, and a working basis, for using Buddha's teaching, the dharma, in our every day modern lives.  The lecture by, international traveling teacher, Macarena Gonzalez Costa, will be about an hour in length, and will provide the prospective of a lay-Buddhist practicing Tibetan Buddhism (Karma Kagyü Lineage), in daily life.

Following the lecture, we will provide time for questions, and we will conclude the evening with a short, (10-15 minute) guided, and formed meditation, on a Buddha aspect.  No experience necessary and all are welcome to attend.

We are very pleased to host, lay Buddhist teacher, Macarena Gonzalez Costa of Argentina, for a night of teachings, questions, and meditation.  Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1981, Macarena, took refuge in 2003 with Lama Ole Nydahl of the Karma Kagyü lineage and became his student. In 2012 Lama Ole asked her to teach and to share her experience as a buddhist. She lives in Buenos Aires where she works as a freelance graphic designer.
--
The Diamond Way Buddhist Center of Minneapolis, belongs to an international non-profit network of over 600 lay Diamond Way Buddhist centers of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, founded by Lama Ole Nydahl and under the spiritual guidance of H.H. the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, Trinley Thaye Dorje.

Diamond Way Buddhism offers practical and effective methods to realize mind's inherent richness for the benefit of all. With an accessible and modern style, it works with people's confidence and desire, using every situation in life to develop fearlessness and joy. We always present a basic introduction for newcomers, and the meditations are guided in English.

Here we will get to sample a variety of their famous cask-conditioned ales and a sampling of two of their most famous dishes. Once we’ve had our fill, we will head back to Minneapolis to the recently expanded Town Hall Brewery. At this iconic staple we will enjoy two unique dishes served up by their very talented head chef and wash them down with four of their delightful brews. Finally, we will head to Day Block Brewing Company, which is the Twin Cities only pizza-based brewpub.
