February 25, 2016, Thursday - Rethinking the Nonpartisan League Author Event at Mill City Museum

Times: 7:00pm-8:00pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 2nd Street South

Join historian Michael J. Lansing for an illustrated presentation based on his new book, Insurgent Democracy: The Nonpartisan League in North American Politics. In 1915, Midwestern and western farmers mounted one of the most significant challenges to party politics in American history: the Nonpartisan League. The League sought to empower citizens and restrain corporate influence, especially powerful Minneapolis-based flour mills and banks. Before its collapse in the 1920s, the League counted more than 250,000 paying members and birthed new alliances between workers and agrarians, including the Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota.

Lansing, associate professor of history at Augsburg College, offers a new look at the Nonpartisan League and its rise and fall in the United States and Canada. After the talk, Professor Lansing will sign copies of the book, which can be purchased in the Mill City Museum store.

The is a free event.

Preserve Minneapolis

Breakfast With a Preservationist: Once Imperiled, Now Heralded

Preservation garners headlines when a building is threatened, but even when a building is saved, it often recedes into the background, along with the struggle to keep it. For this breakfast, we're celebrating once-threatened Minneapolis landmarks like the Hollywood Theater, the Forum Cafeteria, the Lake Street Sears, Roebuck & Co. Building, and many more.

These once-endangered buildings represent strong historic integrity in themselves, but they also significantly shaped parts of the city around them, impacting the visual landscape, economic vitality, and community fabric.

Join us as we discuss the stories of these buildings, how they were saved, and how they've helped form the city as we know it today.

As always, we'll leave plenty of time for questions and discussion from the audience. We'll also have coffee and breakfast treats (please bring a small donation to help offset costs). See you next week!

Two comedies in one night: The Critic/The Real Inspector Hound

From local comic mastermind/adaptor Jeffrey Hatcher (The Government Inspector) comes The Critic, a whirlwind comedy about bad theater, worse playwrights and – worst of all – critics. Over-the-top antics continue with Stoppard’s The Real Inspector Hound, an ingenious play-within-a-play in which two critics find themselves as unsuspecting suspects while watching a classic whodunit.
