Join historian Michael J. Lansing for an illustrated presentation based on his new book, Insurgent Democracy: The Nonpartisan League in North American Politics. In 1915, Midwestern and western farmers mounted one of the most significant challenges to party politics in American history: the Nonpartisan League. The League sought to empower citizens and restrain corporate influence, especially powerful Minneapolis-based flour mills and banks. Before its collapse in the 1920s, the League counted more than 250,000 paying members and birthed new alliances between workers and agrarians, including the Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota.

Lansing, associate professor of history at Augsburg College, offers a new look at the Nonpartisan League and its rise and fall in the United States and Canada. After the talk, Professor Lansing will sign copies of the book, which can be purchased in the Mill City Museum store.
