April 17, 2016, Sunday - Tanaka Scholarship Benefit Concert at MacPhail

Time: 3:30 PM

Location: MacPhail Center for Music, Antonello Hall, 501 S 2nd Street

Tanaka Scholarship Benefit Concert

No tickets required.  Free and open to the public.

Throughout his life, Shin Tanaka was an avid supporter of the arts and held friendships with many of the Twin Cities’ finest musicians. In 1980 he married Susan Hellerud, a beloved alumna of MacPhail College and member of its piano faculty since 1966. In 1996, Susan Hellerud established the need-based scholarship fund in his memory.

Shin Tanaka’s love for music lives on through MacPhail piano students, and through scholarship benefit concerts performed in his honor. This scholarship has been awarded for 19 years to a young dedicated pianist with financial need.

Performers in this year’s benefit concert include:
MacPhail piano faculty members, Susan Hellerud and Susan Genaw.
Minnesota Orchestra members, Catherine Schubilske and Sachiya Isomura,
University of Northwestern Pianist, Richard Lange.
and prize winning author Sara De Luca (who just happens to be Susan Hellerud’s twin sister!)

ABOUT MILL CITY EMANUEL SINGERS
The Mill City Emanuel Singers is a community choir made up of of Downtown Minneapolis neighbors and workers who rehearse on Saturday afternoons, often at the Guthrie Theater, sometimes at the American Academy of Neurology in the Mill District of Downtown Minneapolis. We are directed by JD Steele whose skill as a conductor is remarkable. No singing talent is needed, JD will find it!

The idea for the singers began on a run with a group of neighbors, brainstorming about ways to bring more music into the neighborhood. We sang at the 2015 Holidazzle, and will be singing at the MacPhail Music Matters Luncheon on May 3rd. Come sing with us - the only requirement is a desire to make music with your neighbors.

In the words of Lizz Winstead, "This book is a love letter to Minneapolis and it tells the riveting story of what you must tackle to make and keep a city great." Rybak takes his readers into the highs and lows and the daily drama of a life inextricably linked with the city. Pothole Confidential is that rare document from a politician: one more concerned with the people he served and the issues of his time than with burnishing his own credentials.
