April 26, 2017, Wednesday - 4th Annual Dandelion Honey Pastry Chef Challenge at Solar Arts by Chowgirls

Time: 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Location: Solar Arts by Chowgirls, 711 NE 15th Avenue

The Beez Kneez is proud to present it's 2nd Annual Dandelion Honey Pastry Chef Challenge.

Tickets

The 4th Annual Dandelion Honey Pastry Chef Challenge is the annual celebration of our pollinator advocacy campaign Healthy Bees, Healthy Lives. This campaign was instrumental in passing 2 pieces of important pollinator legislation in 2014. We are still actively working to educate the public about the issues facing honey bees and other pollinators. Much progress has been made for pollinators since, due to grassroots efforts by the many groups and citizens spreading awareness and taking individual actions. However, as we enter a different administration, there has never been a more challenging time for our precious pollinators. As beekeepers, business owners and people concerned about where our food comes from, we know from experience that we must advocate for the honey bee and all pollinators struggling to live in our modern systems of agriculture, eco-systems and urban landscapes.

To show love for pollinators, we invite talented pastry chefs from the Twin Cities to compete in a fun challenge using dandelion honey as their only sweetener. Dandelions are one of the first flowers in the spring where bees find food. For this reason, the French sometimes call it “Love Honey”. The public, for the most part, does not show dandelions love. There is a pervasive thought that dandelions should be sprayed, removed and taken out of our landscapes, especially in lawns. Pesticides play a huge role in the way we grow food and treat our landscapes and they are hurting the very pollinators responsible for our food. We need to start loving our bees and therefore our flowers and food. Symbolically dandelions speak to this idea. Plus, the honey is delicious.

April 26, 2017, Wednesday - Lesley Arimah Book Launch of What It Means When A Man Falls From at The Loft

Time: 6:30pm

Location: The Loft Literary Center, at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave

Lesley Nneka Arimah - What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky

Lesley Nneka Arimah's first story in the New Yorker—about a doll woven from hair who comes to life—was a finalist for a National Magazine Award. Her story in Granta about a father grappling with how to best raise his daughter won the 2015 African Commonwealth Prize. And a story about a young woman who has the ability to see people’s sadness was a finalist for the 2016 Caine Prize. Whimsically beautiful and delightfully strange, Arimah’s inventive and sharply observed stories have amassed a devoted following of readers. So it is a great pleasure to introduce you to this singular and exuberant voice i...n Arimah’s dazzling debut collection.

Lesley Arimah emigrated from Nigeria to Louisiana at the age of thirteen, a disorienting transition that left her keenly attuned to the shockwaves set in motion by displacement. The powerful twelve stories in this collection embrace magical realism while deploying a deeply empathetic understanding of character and place. With her intimate yet universal portrayals of homeland and exile, of mothers molding daughters and young women trying to steer their own course, Arimah explores the struggle to navigate conflicting cultures and to reconcile conflicting desires and needs. At once playfully subversive and resonant with loss, this collection presents a prodigious talent with a remarkable career ahead of her.

Lesley Arimah describes her collection as “a book that interrogates the Nigerian experience, exploring the past, present and future.” What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky joins a proud and essential Riverhead publishing tradition of bringing attention to voices from around the world. It also continues, in company with Junot Diaz’s Drown and Helen Oyeyemi’s What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours, among others, our long and stellar tradition of break-out short fiction.

Advanced tickets guarantee a general admission seat and help cover the Loft's costs to host the event. Pay-what-you-can tickets are available at the door 30 minutes prior to the event on a first-come, first-served basis. No one turned away for lack of funds. Doors open 30 minutes before the event. Seating is general admission (not assigned).

These conversations will lead to recommendations to the City Council on the direction of future funding and programming for neighborhood organizations beyond 2020.

What is the purpose of these conversations?
To host respectful community conversations about the role of neighborhood organizations, leading to the development of recommendations for City Council in early 2018.

In addition to this main goal, additional goals include:
1. To provide an opportunity for neighborhood organization members, residents and stakeholders to gather and talk about the future of their work.
2. To ensure inclusive and representative conversations by reaching out to cultural community organizations and leaders as well City leaders to hear other perspectives.
3. Experience and learn more about Art of Hosting and provide training on how to use this tool

What are the key questions to be covered?
• What are the unique services provided by neighborhood organizations to residents and the City?
• What is the role of neighborhood organizations with the City government?
• What are the major challenges or barriers neighborhood organizations face in serving their communities or partnering with the City?
• How do we measure the impact of neighborhood work?
• Do we have the right neighborhood infrastructure (number of neighborhoods, programming, changing demographics, resource availability, etc.)?
• What resources are needed (funding, policy changes, training and support, etc.) to help support the goal of supporting inclusive, vibrant and effective neighborhood organizations?

How will the feedback be used and how will outcomes be reported?

Data from the conversations will be posted online NCR staff will do an initial review of data and develop draft findings from the data, and will review these findings with our planning partners and the Neighborhoods 2020 committee for accuracy and integrity. After this review process, a Summary of Findings report will be provided to the Neighborhoods 2020 Committee and then the Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission by June, 2017.
