May 12, 2017, Friday - We Watch the Stream: Impressions from River Journey Opening Reception at MWMO

Time: 4:00pm - 6:00pm

Location: Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, 2522 Marshall Street NE

We Watch the Stream: Impressions from River Journey

On exhibit to June 29

Join the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization as they celebrate the opening of We Watch the Stream: Impressions from River Journey, a new art exhibit by artist and educator Jonee Kulman Brigham. During the 2014-15 school year, high school students from River’s Edge Academy worked with Brigham to explore the ways that they and their school are connected with the Mississippi River. Brigham and her students documented their experience through reflective writing, photographs, maps, poetry and more. In the exhibit, these pieces are stitched together to give visitors the opportunity to appreciate the connections revealed, people encountered and value of water discovered as the students traced the path of water as it flowed into and out of the sink at their school. Light refreshments will be provided.

To celebrate, Day Block will donate $1/RyBock purchase to The Minneapolis Foundation in support of their Fourth Generation program. Join us for happy hour, drink a RyBock, and help us change the world!

-----

What’s this Fourth Generation Program?

The Fourth Generation engages emerging philanthropists to learn the skills of smart giving and pool their resources to make a greater impact in the comm...unity than they could alone. Every year, Fourth Generation members vote to choose a local issue, research it together, and make grants to nonprofits.

In the past six years, Fourth Generation has granted nearly $225,000 to local nonprofits that are making positive change on issues such as mental health, youth homelessness, food justice, and services for aging Minnesotans. Learn more about the program: http://www.fourthgenfund.org/

Meet the Maple Syrup Suppliers

Doo Little Syrup, LLC. is a family owned and operated maple syrup farm. They operate on 120 acres of land in northern Wisconsin. Each year, 1,500 maple trees are tapped in order to provide fresh maple syrup. A reverse osmosis system is used to remove water from the sap to create this special, local product.

Times: 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 2nd Street South

"Confluence: Geography, History & Culture at the Intersection of the Mississippi & Minnesota Rivers" Exhibit Opening

A public reception will open a new exhibit featuring photographs by Luke Erickson, with remarks at 7 pm. The photographs highlight the historical, economic and social importance of two rivers, the Mississippi and Minnesota, and serves as a call to observe, preserve and protect our watersheds. These photographs are also an argument about the importance of landscape photography and a meditation on the mythology of the American West, the effects of suburban expansion, the American Dream and the exploitation of natural resources.

A cash bar will be available at the opening reception. This exhibit will be located in the museum's central Mill Commons, and is free and open to the public during regular museum hours through Sept. 24, 2017.

Erickson's work is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
