April 19, 2017, Wednesday - zAmya Theater presents Portraits: Looking Forward, Looking Back at Central Library

Time: 6:30pm

Location: Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall

zAmya Theater Showcase - Portraits: Looking Forward, Looking Back

Second performance - April 23 at 3:00pm. These performances are free and open to the public.

Did you know seniors and youth ages 18-24 are the fastest growing populations experiencing homelessness in Minnesota? zAmya brings youth and seniors together from a variety of backgrounds to tell their stories and get creative in this variety showcase to generate public will to fix this problem!

Join zAmya as we share with you the fruits of the last several months of theater workshops at St. Stephen's Human Services and Ebenezer Park Apartments. Witness as 20 seniors share nuggets of incredible experience, an under-prepared camper encounters a seasoned river dweller, a baseball player learns an unexpected lesson, three bag lady...’s go into a thrift store and transform, and together we build a machine of health and wealth.

zAmya, a Sanskrit word that means, “aiming at peace”, supports St. Stephens’ mission to end homelessness by increasing awareness and understanding through community-based theater. Led by local artist, Maren Ward, zAmya has created and toured 13 original full length theater productions at numerous locations throughout Minnesota including the Guthrie Theater in September, 2016 of Home Street Home Minneapolis.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

April 15, 2017, Saturday - Here Comes Jesus: A Video Series by Joshua McGarvey at the Soap Factory

Time:  6:00pm-Midnight

Location: The Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE

Here Comes Jesus: A Video Series by Joshua McGarvey

The Soap Factory Presents: Here Comes Jesus: A Video Series by Joshua McGarvey. The artist will be releasing the video series overtime on the Soap Factory’s blog leading up to the final video which will be screened in the Soap Factory’s lower level on April 15th at 7:30PM.

Here Comes Jesus is a video series that probes the westernization of the religious figure Jesus. Absurdity ensues as narrative and metaphor are conformed to relate to my own experiences.

Jesus is a crinkled mirror. Jesus is Play-Doh. Jesus invented a table. Stemming from one scene in Mel Gibson’s film about the crucifixion of Jesus in which the Christian messiah is shown building a table for chairs, the series embraces the ambiguous identit...y of god’s only son. Here Comes Jesus is a video series that probes the westernization of the religious figure Jesus. Absurdity ensues as narrative and metaphor are conformed to relate to my own experience
