May 16, 2017, Tuesday - Heid E. Erdrich Book Launch at The Loft

Time: 7 – 8:30 pm

Location: The Loft Literary Center, 1011 Washington Ave S

Heid E. Erdrich Book Launch: Curator of Ephemera at the New Museum for Archaic Media

Heid E. Erdrich will read from her new book, Curator of Ephemera at the New Museum for Archaic Media, and will screen "poemeos"—short films and animations collaboratively made from select works in the collection. Heid E. Erdrich writes from the present into the future where human anxiety lives. Many of her poems engage ekphrasis around the visual work of contemporary Anishinaabe artists. A central trope in this collection is the mixtape, an ephemeral form that Erdrich explores in its role of carrying the romantic angst of American couples. These poems recognize our love of technology and how extraction industries on indigenous lands (that technology requires) threaten our future and obscure the realities of indigenous peoples who know what it is to survive apocalypse. Heid E. Erdrich is Ojibwe enrolled at Turtle Mountain and the author of five poetry collections, most recently Curator of Ephemera at the New Museum for Archaic Media. Heid works as an interdisciplinary artist and scholar, a visual arts curator and an editor. Her collaborative award-winning poem videos and animations are created with an all-indigenous crew. She has won grants and honors from the Loft, Minnesota State Arts Board, First Peoples Fund and Bush Foundation among others. Heid teaches in the Augsburg College Low-residency MFA in Creative Writing program.

May 13, 2017, Saturday - Euripedes’ Medea at The Lab (thru May 27)

5/13/2017 NOTE - This show at the Lab has been cancelled.

Times: Thursday-Saturday 8pm; Sunday 4pm

Location: The Lab Theater, 700 N 1st Street

New Epic Theater presents: Euripedes’ Medea  May 13 – 27

One of world drama's most infamous characters is brought to controversial new life in this shockingly relevant take on an ancient tragedy. Medea’s marriage is breaking up. And so is everything else. The ancient Greek tragedy of a woman taking vengeance on the husband who’s left her is updated for the current era. Exploring the limits of revenge and freedom, Euripides’ play cuts to the heart of gender politics and asks: "What does it mean to be a woman and a wife?" Michelle O’Neill plays the title role with Mark Benninghofen as Jason.

You're invited to stay for a post-show discussion following every performance. General admission $32.

May 12, 2107, Friday - Charles Francis Chan Jr.’s Exotic Oriental Murder Mystery Opens at Guthrie Theater

Time: 7:30pm

Location: Guthrie Theater, Dowling Theater, 818 Second Street S

The Guthrie Theater presents a Mu Performing Arts production of
Charles Francis Chan Jr.’s Exotic Oriental Murder Mystery
by Lloyd Suh

1967: a new political identity called Asian American emerges and a young literary hippie named Frank essays an inscrutable Chinese detective. A harmless sing-song orientalist minstrel show that ends in a grotesque carnival of murder!

At once both comedic and political, Lloyd Suh’s play within a play delves into the history and politics of yellowface with a keen eye, dark humor and sharp wit. The New York Times called it, “a metatheatrical polemic about the way Asian-Americans have been characterized and caricatured in popular culture.”

Charles Francis Chan Jr.’s Exotic Oriental Murder Mystery was featured in Mu Performing Arts’ 2016 New Eyes Festival at The Playwrights Center. Mu celebrates its 25th Anniversary Season this year.

This production is recommended for age 14 and up.
