September 17, 2017, Sunday - NADIA at MacPhail Center for Music

Time: 4:00pm

Location: MacPhail Center for Music, 501 S 2nd Street

NADIA - Giving voice to the most influential music teacher of the 20th century through her words and music.

Who was Nadia Boulanger? Why did thousands of musicians flock to France to study with “the most influential teacher since Socrates”? Actress/singer Christina Baldwin of Jeune Lune/Moving Company/ Guthrie is compelling in the role of Nadia as she explores the memories and secrets behind this charismatic music teacher in a riveting one -woman tour- de -force marrying music with theater.

In this chamber music/ theatrical revue, music performed by the Bakken Trio‘s warmly expressive violinist Stephanie Arado and the brilliant pianist Michael Kim trigger Nadia’s memories of her life, the deaths of her father and lover, the complex relationship she had with “the true genius of the family”, her sister Lili, and the “crazy pleasure” she feels teaching.   Nadia Boulanger’s brilliance and magnetic personality are showcased in master classes – How Does Bach Write Mercy? – as well as in private lessons with Copland, Francaix and Piazzola.

The imaginative Stephen Epp, veteran of Jeune Lune Theater and the Moving Company, focuses on symbolism in his playful yet focussed direction of this original Bakken Trio production based on  Boulanger’s own quotes,  and  on scenes recounted by Boulanger students to scriptwriter Mina Fisher. Musical excerpts of Nadia’s teachers and from her vastly diverse students – Piazzola and Quincy Jones, Lili Boulanger and Skrowaczewski – permeate the play, even as music formed the backbone of Nadia Boulanger’s life. NADIA is the story of a woman tenaciously overcoming sexism in early twentieth century Paris to make an unparalleled impact on the musical world.

In this homage to great teachers, themes include the richness of the mentor/scholar relationship, the balance of artistic freedom with craft, truth vs. perception, and the counterpoint of emotion endured by those who live intensely.

Tickets available at the door and on http://www.bakkentrio.org/  ($30 general, $25 senior, $20 student)

Additional performance: Monday, September 18, 7:30pm

Location: East Hennepin and Main St. SE

Preserve Minneapolis presents: Historic East Hennepin Walking Tour

The bustling commercial district surrounding East Hennepin Avenue has hosted many names throughout the years, but everyone knows its unforgettable landmarks . . . Surdyk's, Kramarczuk's, Historic Main Street, and Lourdes Church.

Located across the Hennepin Bridge from Downtown, this neighborhood was originally established in 1855 as the Town of St. Anthony Falls and later merged with The City of Minneapolis in 1872. Its proximity to the Mississippi River, Downtown, the University and Northeast Minneapolis have made it an influential hub for transit, industry and commerce. The last decade has brought dramatic change, and the area around East Hennepin is now considered one of the trendiest and most exciting places in Minneapolis to eat, shop and live. Fortunately, the area has managed to maintain its old-world flavor to this day.

Join Preserve Minneapolis for a “behind-the-scenes” history of the busy streets, unique businesses and colorful people that have shaped this popular walking neighborhood. Hear amazing stories told from the perspective of individuals who have lived and worked here, through good times and bad. Come away with perspectives on what life and work here might have actually felt like throughout this neighborhood’s most defining eras.

This tour will walk approximately 1.5 miles. The tour guides are Scott Parkin and Michael Rainville.

Time: 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Location:  East Island Avenue & Merriam Street

Nicollet Island: North Tip Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

Nicollet Island developed as a microcosm of early Minneapolis, with water-powered factories, storefronts, block-long rowhouses, a mansion district, and a neighborhood that still stands as a sampler of the 19th century residential architecture. The 40-acre island just above St. Anthony Falls next to downtown Minneapolis is the site of the first bridge anywhere across the Mississippi River (where Hennepin Avenue crosses now), as well as an early railroad crossing that divides the island in two. It is said to be the only inhabited island the entire length of the Mississippi.

The North Tip Tour focuses on the the neighborhood upriver from the railroad tracks where people have lived since the 1860s. Native Americans tapped maples there, houses moved within the island and onto the island, a school went up and came down, and resident donkeys made friends with visitors into the 1980s. This tour walks about a half-mile; the tour guide is Chris Steller.
