Location: Surly Brewing Company, 520 Malcolm Avenue SE (Take the Green Line to the Prospect Park station.)

SurlyFest 2017

The 10th Annual SurlyFest takes over the entire brewery (Beer Hall, Beer Garden, Festival Field, Scheid Hall, the deck, the parking lot…everywhere but the roof, to be honest) on Saturday, September 23 starting at 11 AM. Think of it as the ultimate beer amusement park, no disrespect to Duff Gardens. There will be live music all day, a variety of food options, games and activities, SurlyFest merch, plus all the MNUFC prematch party activities and the march to the game for United fans.

As with last year’s celebration: SurlyFest is open to all folks, all ages – no tickets for entry required, and there’s no cover charge. That said – if and when we hit capacity on event day, only those who pre-purchased advance SurlyFest packages have GUARANTEED access to the brewery for the day. Those without a ticket can still grab the 2017 commemorative glassware, they’ll be available for purchase in The Company Store.

September 23, 2017, Saturday - Nicollet Island: South Tip Walking Tour

Time: 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Location:  East Island Avenue & Merriam Street

Nicollet Island: South Tip Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

Nicollet Island developed as a microcosm of early Minneapolis, with water-powered factories, storefronts, block-long rowhouses, a mansion district, and a neighborhood that still stands as a sampler of the 19th century residential architecture. The 40-acre island just above St. Anthony Falls next to downtown Minneapolis is the site of the first bridge anywhere across the Mississippi River (where Hennepin Avenue crosses now), as well as an early railroad crossing that divides the island in two. It is said to be the only inhabited island the entire length of the Mississippi.

The South Tip Tour focuses on the falls and the industry it attracted; the Hennepin crossing and the commerce that lined it; and the movers and shakers who populated Grove Street and built grand homes downriver from the railroad tracks. This tour walks about a half mile; the tour guide is Chris Steller.

The celebration will feature performances by Palabristas, Danez Smith, Hieu Minh Nguyen, Tanaya Winder, and DJ Nak.

This event is part of our thematic programming, Vigilance.

VIGILANCE
Much like how an art museum might present a special exhibit, the Loft is introducing seasonal thematic programming. Our themes will help connect you across many of the Loft program offerings. We believe that poems and stories can be an important lens through which to view the world, and these themes will compel us all to look at the words we write and authors we read in new ways.

This fall..., our theme will be Vigilance: How can poems and stories help us to maintain attention over long periods of time? How does language bear witness? Through the theme of Vigilance, the Loft will explore the ways in which words help us hold light in the darkness.

We invite you to explore our fall theme of Vigilance in as many ways as interest you. The video and listings below highlight the ideas and opportunities to participate throughout the fall.

TICKETS
Advanced tickets guarantee a general admission seat and help cover the Loft's costs to host the event. Pay-what-you-can tickets are available at the door 30 minutes prior to the event on a first-come, first-served basis. No one turned away for lack of funds. Doors open 30 minutes before the event. Seating is general admission (not assigned).
