Mills is an adventurer and award-winning journalist and author, who grew up exploring the outdoors with his family. He writes about outdoor recreation, the environment, charitable giving and sustainable living, and minority issues. He’s worked in and written about the outdoor industry since 1989. He lives in Wisconsin with his family. Mills observes that minority populations are much less likely to seek recreation, adventure and solace in our wilderness spaces. September 6, 2017, Wednesday - "Art, Wayfinding, and the Creation of Place" with Artist Owen Brown at Mill City Quarter

Time: 5:30pm to 7:30pm, artist talk at 6:00pm

Location: Mill City Quarter (MCQ), 322 S 2nd Street

"Art, Wayfinding, and the Creation of Place"

During this event, artist Owen Brown will discuss paintings he created for MCQ, and the understanding and conscious investment of "place" in "space," that is, how can we seek to create more human environments.

We have the choice to make our places:

Intimate vs. Impersonal
Informal vs. Formal
Private vs. Public
Attentive vs. Dismissive/Indifferent

...which correspondingly affect people by making them feel:

Safe vs. Imperilled
Certain vs. Confused
Encouraged vs. Discouraged
Found vs. Lost!

Per Owen, "Of course, this has been considered by thousands of architectural theorists and psychologists (to say nothing of interior designers), but it's always worth thinking about these issues. We "humanize" the spaces in which we move and live whether or not we consider such, from the mere fact of being human."

September 6, 2017, Wednesday - Public Hearing on Sheridan Memorial Park Improvements at MPRB

Time: 6:30 pm

Location: Minneapolis Park and Rec Board, 2117 W River Road N

Public Hearing on Sheridan Memorial Park Improvements

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is holding a public hearing on proposed improvements for Sheridan Memorial Park. Sheridan Memorial Park will receive more than $1 million in park improvements in 2018. After evaluating feedback from three public meetings and an online survey, a preferred concept for the park improvements has been created. Click the link below to view a detailed depiction of the proposed improvements, which include new playgrounds, paths, public art, picnic shelter, restrooms, a basketball court and volleyball court.

During the hearing, interested members of the public will have a chance to weigh in the proposed improvements before the Board of Commissioners. After the hearing is closed, commissioners will consider its approval. If approved, construction bids will be awarded over winter 2017-2018 and the park improvements will be built during spring-summer 2018. In 2015 the MPRB was awarded a $500,000 grant  from the National Park Service Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership project. The federal grant is matched by $1 million in Minnesota Parks and Trails Legacy Funding (administered by Met Council).
