Time:  6 PM – 9 PM

Location: Modist Brewing Co., 505 N 3rd Street

Break the Bubble @ Modist Brewing Co.

Are you ready for Halloween? We are! Break the Bubble will host an epic Halloween costume party on Tuesday, October 30 at Modist Brewing Co. We're offering prizes for the best costume so come dressed to impress!

So wait, this is a singles event right? Or a professional networking thing?

Nope. Break the Bubble is for making friends, pure and simple. You can leave the pick-up lines and elevator speeches at home. Refreshing, isn't it?

What's the format?

1. Show up

2. Put on a name tag

3. Introduce yourself to someone new

I heard these events have themes. What’s up with that?

Yep. Our events have themes because most of us need a little help kickstarting conversations with people we don't know. Our question for October has a Halloween flare: "What scares you?"

October 30, 2018, Tuesday - Demons of the Deep Blue Sea at the Twin Cities Horror Festival at Southern Theater

Time: 10pm

Demons of the Deep Blue Sea at the Twin Cities Horror Festival

Much of human civilization has always depended on the sea - and the sea has always taken its share of humans. October 29, 2018, Monday - Death Makeovers! (Embalming & Death Photos in the Lobby at TCHF) at Southern Theater

Time: 6:30p nightly

Location: The Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Ave S

Death Makeovers! (Embalming & Death Photos in the Lobby at TCHF)

Macabre pranksters and Pre-Postmortem Experts, Amica and Hekate, will fly from Portland Oregon to Minneapolis' Twin Cities Horror Festival this fall to provide one-of-a-kind embalming makeovers and death portraits in the lobby of the theater between shows.

Think of us as a creepy, silly, ambient, live performance art installation.... Or sort of like those chair massage tents that set up in parks and airports and malls.

First we'll lay you down, turn on some soothing (freaky) music, and go through the motions of "embalming" while bantering over your "dead" body. Then we give you a mini corpse-like makeover, lay you in the coffin, snap a photo, sign your death certificate, and send you on your way with your souvenirs!

Stop by our morgue between shows to see what it's like on the coroner's slab!

Appointments are flexible, lasting between 10 and 20 minutes, and can be made in advance (or just walk on up), and are performed for a sliding scale donation (Suggested $15-30).

Sign up for your Death Makeover and Casket Picture in advance by shooting us a DM or email with your preferred time! (funeralsforlifepdx@gmail.com)

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Location: Mill City Museum704 South 2nd Street

Washburn A Mill Tour

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time. This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

  • The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
  • "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
  • The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
  • The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
  • Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928 and 1991
  • The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

Halloween Bar Crawl

To start the crawl you will need to first pick one of our check in locations. Remember you only need to check in once.  During the check in you will receive two very important things. Every crawl is a little different, but the "Bar Crawl" section below you will see what venues and how many are offering free drinks.

Our crawls are often called Make Your Own Adventure Crawls. The reason for this is we have a ton of bars, drink specials, and other things going on, but we don't have a set agenda. The reason we don't have a bar 1, bar 2, bar 3 format, is because most of the time crawls are so large many of the bars are not big enough for the whole group.

BROTHERS: FREE DRINK (4PM-8PM) $6 Apppetizers
SNEAKY PETE'S: $3 Domestic Bottles, Rail Vodka, & Rail Gin | $4 Specialty Bottles & Calls | $5 Top Shelf
GLUEKS: Specials TBD
LAST CALL: Venue Pending
AFTER PARTY: 10PM-12AM
All of our After Parties have either a will DJ or a rocking band.  Remember when our after party starts, most of our deals and specials end with the other bars on the crawl. So don't be late and get to the after party! Don't forget your friends, and don't forget to get find a safe and sober way home.

Location: Courtyard by Marriott, 1500 S Washington Ave

Giant Steps 2018

Giant Steps is a day-long gathering for creative entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial creatives. It's a place to expand your network, advance your thinking, and enhance your skills. It's about exchange, collaboration, and community.

What will you get from Giant Steps?
• Inspiration and insights to push your work forward
• Connections with like-minded souls and future collaborators
• Valuable information and resources for building a sustainable creative career or business.

Why Giant Steps?
1. Because there is no blueprint for success. Instead of “experts”, we gather creative, talented, forward-thinking people together to share their experiences and lessons learned in their work building creative businesses and artistic careers.

2. Because the magic is in the mix. By bringing together a great mix of people, we create an opportunity for you to learn from folks who maybe don’t do what you do, but share similar challenges. The mix of fresh ideas from artists and entrepreneurs--and the possibility of “unlikely collaborations”--provides great opportunities to make giant steps in your own work.

3. Because there are practical things we all need to do to make our work…work. Taxes, legal topics, money, marketing. We’ll help you with some of those, too.

4. Best value for professional development, with a personal side, too.

  • Full day of conversations on the topics that hold us back, but are rarely discussed so openly.
  • Choice of workshops on practical topics like legal, tax, marketing, more.
  • One-on-One sessions with past Giant Steps speakers
  • Network-building opportunities throughout the day
  • Professional portrait included
  • Drawings for services, products, and art from other Giant Steps fam, valued $50 and up.
  • Lunch, snacks, and a drink at happy hour all included in the price.

Throughout the day, you'll have the chance to link with some of the brightest and most interesting artists and entreprenuers in Minnesota and beyond.

October 25, 2018, Thursday - Gamut Gallery's Annual Call for Work Curated by Tara LaPlante

Time: 7:00pm - 11:00pm  $5 or free with Gallery Membership

Location: Gamut Gallery, 717 South 10th Street

ARTISTS // Aaron Brand, Annie Hejny, Benjamin Wuest, Carla Rodriguez, Christopher E. Harrison, Christopher Palbicki , CL Martin, Derek Dwyer, Desi Moore, Elissa Cedarleaf Dahl, Eric Mueller, Erik Farseth, Grace Sippy, Jacob Docksey, James Schenck, Julia Wilson, Lisa Pemrick, Maggie Dimmick, Maxwell Mateikis, Meranda Turbak, Mic Stowell, Natalia Berglund, Nicholas Kovatch, Phaedra Odelle, Philip Noyed, Polly Norman, Roger Johnson, Terry Barczak, & Toni Gallo.

From political statements to traditional expression, delicate intricacies to abstracted geometries, human intimacy to surreal landscapes - C4W: 2018 curated by Tara LaPlante presents a kaleidoscopic range of styles, mediums, and artists' points of view. More than 120 artists participated in Gamut Gallery’s “C4W: Call for Work” this year, submitting up to 5 pieces each of a wide range of visual media, including: video, installation art, sculpture, experimental technology, photography, fiber, drawing, painting, and collage.

While there is no predetermined theme for the C4W exhibitions, the guest curator brings their unique perspective and interpretation to the submitted works. LaPlante was particularly fascinated by the diversity of the submissions - a characteristic that embodies Gamut’s approach to programming, where we strive to run the gamut of various styles, content and media - and made her selections based on their high standard of work and distinct quality. “My vision is to immerse the viewer within the broad and bold strokes of these art forms together, saturated in the idea that diversity in itself can create strength, set intrigue, and act as the spark for conversation and humanity,” said LaPlante.

New this year, there will be two “Best in Show” awards. One will be selected by the guest curator and the other by opening night attendees. Both winners will be awarded $100 cash and Platinum Memberships to Gamut Gallery ($250 value). In addition to the opening reception, there will be other special events during the course of the exhibit: the 2nd annual Members Gala will be held on Saturday, November 10th; and, a screening of locally-produced short dramas will serve as the exhibit finale on Saturday, November 17th. Stay tuned to gamutgallerympls.com and our various social media channels for more information and special announcements leading up to the exhibit, plus more event details listed below.

ABOUT THE CURATOR

Tara LaPlante is a visual artist, founder of the multimedia events brand Futra, and business manager for the motion graphics studio Immanent. Originally from Wisconsin, she graduated from Montana State with a BFA in Painting in 2000, and studied Art History abroad at Maastricht University in The Netherlands. After school she moved back to the Midwest to continue her creative endeavors. In Minneapolis, she co-founded the art collective Offbeat Gallery and record label Timefog, which was home to many international techno artists.

Tara’s relocation to Los Angeles in 2009 formed a change in her vision. The fusion of dance music culture and visual arts became the source of inspiration for Futra. Founded in 2012, this multimedia experience brand features DJ’s, producers, designers, performers, and visual artists through releases, podcasts, club events, and art spaces. Since 2015, the focus of Futra has altered to generating large-scale, concept-driven, multimedia gallery shows. Her personal art is colorful, abstract, and ranges from expressionistic to minimal in style. She currently works in painting, paper collage, and textile arts.

October 25, 2018, Thursday - Theater Underground presents "12 Angry Jurors"

Time: 7pm

Location: Whitney Fine Arts Center MCTC

Theater Underground presents "12 Angry Jurors"

In a hot, claustrophobic jury room, twelve jurors must decide the fate of a young man accused of killing his abusive father. The differences of opinion between the jurists could not be starker and the stakes—life or death—could not be higher. As the time moves inexorably on, and the need to reach a decision looms ever more immanent, the jurists’ deliberations veer from reason to blinding emotion and rampant prejudice. They sweat, swear, stalk and threaten. Can they ever reach a verdict? The answer to this question charges the action of one of the most challenging dramas ever to electrify the American stage.

Admission is free. Audiences are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the food shelf. Parking is available in the Hennepin Avenue ramp for $5 or at no cost with a Metropolitan State University parking card.

Hosted by Theater Underground, Metropolitan State University and Minneapolis Community and Technical College.
