Time: 12 Noon - 5pm

Location: Hennepin Theatre Trust, 900 Hennepin Ave

This is Our Downtown Exhibit in The Gallery at 900 Hennepin

This Is Our Downtown is a multi-media exhibition of original artwork by young people experiencing or transitioning out of homelessness. The exhibit is the result of a year-long series of artist residencies where youth collaborated with artists Wing Young Huie, John

KKC’s Executive Director Crystal Brinkman describes the exhibit, “Kulture Klub Collaborative continues to examine and uplift our youth’s relationship with downtown Minneapolis. Young people have always been an important part of the neighborhood. Their perspectives are often unheard and it’s powerful to witness them emerge through creative practice.” This Is Our Downtown captures a moment in Minneapolis’s history through the eyes of those who know it best.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Additional support generously provided by the McKnight Foundation, Target Foundation and individual donors.

November 9, 2018, Friday - Opening Reception: MCBA/Jerome Book Arts Fellowships Series XIV at MCBA

Time: 6p - 8p

Location: Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1011 Washington Ave S #100

Opening Reception: MCBA/Jerome Book Arts Fellowships Series XIV

Celebrate the newest exhibition of the MCBA/Jerome Foundation Book Arts Fellowships Series! Experience the exciting new work of this year’s recipients: printmaker and book artist Cathy Ryan; artist Ioana Stoian; paper maker and social practice artist Peng Wu; and installation artist Jammo Xu.

On view November 3 - January 27, 2019 in MCBA's Main Gallery, the Opening Reception is Friday, November 9 from 6-8PM and is free and open to the public.

With generous funding from the Jerome Foundation and technical guidance from MCBA, the Fellowship recipients developed their independent projects throughout the previous year. Since 1985 the Jerome Foundation has helped emerging artists push the boundaries of contemporary book arts by supporting the creation of new book works. Under the previous thirteen series of fellowships and six series of mentorships, Minnesota artists of diverse disciplines—including printers, papermakers, binders, painters, sculptors, poets, photographers, choreographers, filmmakers and others—have created projects ranging from exquisitely crafted fine press volumes to documented performances to one-of-a-kind installations that “break the bindings” and redefine conventional notions of book form and content.

Cathy Ryan is a book artist and printmaker based in Minneapolis, MN. For the Fellowship, she produced Connections, a mixed media printed book installed as an abstract landscape, drawing on themes of nature, perspective, and connection. She holds a bachelor’s degree in art from San Francisco State University, and a post baccalaureate certificate in Print, Paper, Book from Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Her work is included in the 2012 Quarry publication 1000 Artist Books, and, in 2014, she was an artist-in-residence at the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Red Wing, MN. She is a past recipient of the MCBA/Jerome Book Arts Fellowship in 2011-2012.

Ioana Stoian is a self-taught, British-born artist with a passion for paper. For her Fellowship project, she has created The A-Z of Motherhood, an edition of hand bound books containing 28 pages of custom-dyed handmade paper, juxtaposing specific words and colors to create an energetic harmony. Since 2006 Ioana has been experimenting with two of her main interests—paper folding and papermaking. Her works focus on the harmony between color, structure, and form. Ioana is the author of Origami for All and The Origami Garden, and she participated in the MCBA/Jerome Book Arts Mentorship program in 2014-2015.

Peng Wu and Jammo Xu’s installation, "Arriving Ashore", advocates for global awareness of the refugee crisis. The artists have been in close collaboration with UNITED for Intercultural Action—a European network against nationalism, racism, fascism and in support of migrants and refugees, which has worked in the past 15 years to document the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe. The artists use handmade paper and other sculptural materials to create an installation to commemorate the refugees who lost their lives in the forceful migration. Peng Wu is a sculptor and papermaker working in social practice and public art. Originally from China, he has been based in Minneapolis since 2011. Peng is a collaborating artist with the One World Many Papers project and has had two Northern Spark projects. He received his MFA in visual studies from Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He also has an MFA in product design and a bachelor’s degree in atmospheric physics. Minneapolis-based Jammo Xu is a visual storyteller who works with installation and public art. Also a native of China, Jammo received her MFA in visual studies from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She also has a bachelor’s degree in animation.

Since 1985, the Jerome Foundation has helped emerging artists push the boundaries of contemporary book arts by supporting the creation of new work. Through these fellowship and mentorship opportunities, Minnesota artists of diverse disciplines have created book arts projects that challenge and redefine conventional notions of book form and content.

November 8, 2018, Thursday - Big Ideas: Fairy Tales featuring Daniel Mallory Ortberg at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft Literary Center, at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Avenue S

Big Ideas: Fairy Tales featuring Daniel Mallory Ortberg

Fairy Tales were meant to function as a moral compass. But on closer inspection, are they even moral? Archetypes and stereotypes abound, and the stories are often terrifying, traumatizing, and worse. Daniel Ortberg’s latest The Merry Spinster: Tales of Everyday Horror leans into the darkness and asks: what happens when you give a classic tale a contemporary makeover? In this collection, Ortberg subverts tales like A Little Mermaid, Cinderella, and Beauty and the Beast, to ask more meaningful questions and re-calibrate the compass.

Daniel Mallory Ortberg is Slate's "Dear Prudence." He has written for The New YorkerNew York magazine, O, The Oprah Magazine, and The Atlantic. He is the co-creator of The Toast, a general-interest website geared toward women. Daniel is the author of Texts from Jane Eyreand The Merry Spinster

Big Ideas is a series from the Loft that puts literature at the center of dynamic conversations and brings together readers and writers to explore ideas relevant to our society today.

Pay-what-you-can tickets are available 30 minutes prior to the event on a first-come, first-served basis (even for sold out events). No one turned away for lack of funds.

To guarantee admission, you can purchase tickets ($15 general/$10 Loft members) in advance through the Loft's website. Doors open 30 minutes before the event. Seating is general admission (not assigned).

Time: 4:15PM – 6:30PM

Location: The Dayton's Project, 700 Nicollet Mall

2025 plan quarterly forum | the future of downtown retail

Downtown Minneapolis' retail scene continues to evolve, not only due to the changing needs of our downtown community but also due to national trends within the industry. Department stores of the past are less prevalent as smaller, boutique footprints. Downtown itself has seen incredible retail growth and prosperity in neighborhoods like the North Loop, and it is currently working to revitalize the retail core along Nicollet. What is next for the downtown retail community? The mpls downtown council's 2025 plan quarterly forum focused on "the future of retail" will dive into this topic with a distinguished panel of individuals who know downtown's retail past well and are helping shape its future.
