October 17, 2018, Wednesday - Quilt, Not Quilt: The Afterlife

Quilt Not Quilt by Tari "TJ" Goerlitz

Time: 6 PM – 8 PM

Location: Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1011 Washington Ave S

Quilt, Not Quilt: The Afterlife is a new exhibition at Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA), on view from October 12th - December 2nd in the Open Book Cowles Literary Commons. This exhibition features artwork that repurposes old, tattered quilts into new forms while still preserving the quilts’ heritage, craftsmanship, and legacy. The opening reception for Quilt, Not Quilt will take place on Wednesday, October 17 from 6-8pm. The reception includes an artist talk and poetry reading from 7-8pm in the Target Performance Hall on the second floor of Open Book, as well as a meet and greet with the artists and poets. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Twelve participating artists created paper, poetry, broadsides, and other works from quilts, drawing inspiration from the textiles themselves as well as from the stories they tell. The artists explored the political, economic, and social contexts surrounding the creation of the quilts, making connections between the makers’ history and their work. The artwork created for the exhibition touches on themes of craftsmanship and labor, scarcity and wealth, and stories both recalled and forgotten.

Quilt, Not Quilt showcases artists from the MCBA community and beyond. Participating artists include Zoë Bird, Katy Collier, Tari “TJ” Goerlitz, Georgia A. Greeley, Darius Homayounpour, Karen Kinoshita, Dana LeMoine, Rosa Maria de la Cueva Peterson, Jerry McClelland, Cathy Ryan, Patty Wheeler Andrews, and Morgan Grayce Willow. Each artist transformed their chosen quilt in unexpected and thought-provoking ways, and the resulting exhibition both honors the practice of quilting and expands established notions about what it means to craft and make art.

As the largest and most comprehensive center of its kind in the nation, Minnesota Center for Book Arts celebrates the book as a vibrant contemporary art form that takes many shapes. From the traditional crafts of papermaking, letterpress printing, and hand bookbinding to experimental artmaking and self-publishing techniques, MCBA supports the limitless creative evolution of book arts through book arts workshops and programming for adults, youth, families, K-12 students, and teachers. MCBA is located in the Open Book building in downtown Minneapolis, alongside partner organizations The Loft Literary Center and Milkweed Editions.

October 17, 2018, Wednesday - This Is Our Downtown Exhibition Opening

Time: 5p - 7p

Location:Hennepin Theatre Trust, 900 Hennepin Avenue

This Is Our Downtown Exhibition Opening

Kulture Klub Collaborative celebrates the opening of "This is our Downtown", a multi-media exhibition of original artwork by young people experiencing or transitioning out of homelessness. The exhibit is the result of a year-long series of artist residencies, and offers each participant’s unique perspectives of downtown Minneapolis.

Participants, young people between the ages of 16 and 24, collaborated with photographer Wing Young Huie, photographer Nancy Musinguzi, filmmaker John Marks, and videographers Ryan Stopera and Adja Gildersleve of Free Truth Media to create film, photographs, posters, and videos that capture their views of a rapidly changing downtown where they spend much of their lives.

KKC youth documented and recorded their experiences of Downtown Minneapolis, including the spaces that have particular meaning to them such as the Minneapolis Central Library, Hennepin Avenue, the skyway system, and Loring Park. "This Is Our Downtown" captures a moment in Minneapolis’s history through the eyes of those who know it best.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Additional funding generously provided by the McKnight Foundation, Target Foundation, and individual donors.

October 15, 2018, Monday - National Theatre Live: King Lear at St. Anthony Main Theatre

Time: 7:00pm

Location: St. Anthony Main Theatre, 115 Main Street SE

National Theatre Live: King Lear

Broadcast live from London’s West End, see Ian McKellen’s ‘extraordinarily moving portrayal’ (Independent) of King Lear in cinemas.

Chichester Festival Theatre’s production received five-star reviews for its sell-out run, and transfers to the West End for a limited season. Jonathan Munby directs this contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, moving and shocking play.

Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, King Lear sees two ageing fathers – one a King, one his courtier – reject the children who truly love them. Their blindness unleashes a tornado of pitiless ambition and treachery, as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends.
