November 4, 2018, Sunday - Bakken Trio Performance: Three B’s at MacPhail

Time: 4:00pm

Location: MacPhail Center for Music, 501 2nd Street S

Bakken Trio Performance: Three B’s

What do we hold as sacred – that which is deserving of veneration? Music has been used to identify one’s religious beliefs. But music has the power to awaken the soul outside the constraints of organized religion. The composers presented in this program represent a sacred trinity that has guided my musical journey.

November 3, 2018, Saturday - Washburn A Mill Tour at Mill City Museum

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Location: Mill City Museum704 South 2nd Street

Washburn A Mill Tour

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time. This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

  • The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
  • "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
  • The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
  • The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
  • Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928 and 1991
  • The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

13 movement song cycle for three voices and chamber orchestra by Sarah Kirkland Snider

November 2, 2018, Friday - Hot Funky Butt Jazz opens at the Guthrie

Performances:  See show link below

Location: Guthrie Theater, 818 S 2nd Street

Hot Funky Butt Jazz

At the stroke of midnight in the heart of 1900s New Orleans, Union Sons Hall would transform into the Funky Butt — a dance joint named for the throng of sweaty, soulful bodies moving to a provocative new groove called “hot music.”

Known today as Jazz, this sound revolution began with a black cornet player named Buddy Bolden who birthed an intoxicating brew of Afro/Caribbean, Latin, Native and European rhythms that became the essence of the Big Easy and set the Jazz Age in motion. Featuring an ensemble of more than 50 actors with and without disabilities, Hot Funky Butt Jazz tells the story of the creative and resilient personalities who stepped out of the shadows to defy racism and create an improvisational sound so unique, it changed music and culture forever.

October 31, 2018, Wednesday - Final Four Informational Event at Westminster Church

TIme: 2-4 PM

Location: Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1200 Marquette Avenue

Because for the first time in 18 years, the most highly anticipated college championship event in the nation returns to Minneapolis.

By now you have surely heard that the pinnacle event of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, the Final Four, will be played at U.S. Bank Stadium, April 6 and 8, 2019. We are here to help you with what to expect in this opportunity as well as provide information on the preparation needed to successfully host this major event.

The Final Four experience is unlike any other. An estimated 94,000 passionate hoops fans and college students will pour into downtown Minneapolis for a four‐day, joy‐filled celebration of college athletics. Enthusiastic fans, decked out in team colors and spontaneously chanting, will bring a buzz to the streets, local establishments and hotels. People from our region will join them as well, to enjoy what our city has to offer.

Thousands of basketball coaches from all over the country will also take in the sights and sounds of Minneapolis, while meeting with peers and colleagues at their annual convention. And, as we would expect, several thousand friendly volunteers will ensure that all visitors experience a warm Minnesota welcome. The energy will be infectious.

The Final Four is much more than three basketball games. All weekend long, everyone is invited to attend free and low‐cost events and entertainment around the city, including downtown workers. The Final Four is as much for locals as it is for visitors. Beginning Friday April 5, interactive events for all ages will offer something for everyone to ‘come downtown and stay downtown’. These events include:

 Friday, April 5: A free, open access day at U.S. Bank Stadium‐ Fun and free for the entire family and people of all ages, fans can see the stadium as it looks for the
championship games and get down close to courtside action, taking a seat anywhere in the house. The Final Four teams will have their last open practice before Saturday’s national semifinal games, followed by a college all‐star game in the afternoon.
 Friday, April 5‐Monday, April 8: A Fan Festival – Fans will enjoy interactive games, special celebrity and athlete appearances, autograph signings and much more at the Convention Center. There’s fun for all ages, and kids 12 and under get in free.
 Sunday, April 7: A Basketball Parade‐ Thousands of children will participate in The Dribble, showing their moves and parading with basketballs through the streets of Minneapolis, along a route ending at Fan Fest, where they will receive free entry.
 Friday, April 5‐Sunday April 7: A Music Series – Top, nationally known artists will perform live music in downtown Minneapolis. More details to come soon.

To learn more about what’s in store, you are invited to attend the first of a series of briefings, in which developing event plans will be shared and dialogue can occur. Our goal is to keep downtown stakeholders informed and assist in your preparations for a fantastic Final Four. The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 31 from 2‐4 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, (1200 Marquette Ave, in the Westminster Hall – enter from Nicollet). Members of the 2019 Minneapolis Final Four Local Organizing Committee will be on‐hand to provide a Final Four event overview and share what is upcoming in the planning process. Members of our organizations will also be there to provide you with resources to stay in touch and to get involved. This will include an update on the current skyway app and discussion of options to expand coverage to help visitors navigate easily throughout our city.

October 31, 2018, Wednesday - Boom Island Brewing's Half-Assed Halloween

Time: 4 – 9 pm

Date: Boom Island Brewing, 2014 Washington Ave. N.

Boom Island's Half-Assed Halloween

In the grand scheme of things, Boom Island has been around for a long time. We pride ourselves on our unique beers and special event ideas that occasionally get replicated around town. When it comes to Halloween parties, however, we have to admit, every other brewery in town tends to do a better job than us. We will go toe to toe with anyone when it comes to Christmas parties, but not Halloween. We wondered what we could possibly do to compete with all the breweries that take their Halloween parties very seriously?

There’s only one answer: throw a Half-Assed Halloween Party! That’s right, we will have half assed sound effect music from the 60’s. We will have misshapen pumpkins and lame decorations. We will have the highly unpopular candy corn and circus peanuts on hand. We have thoughts of exploring a few sugar-free options as well. A basket of Halloween gourds goes to the winner of our Lame Costume contest. Our sponsor, Park Dental, will be offering free toothbrushes while supplies last. We might even have a few apples in the room.

Join us for a Half-Assed Halloween at Boom Island. If you are planning to go to multiple rooms on Halloween, make a point to stop by. Come by early, we close at 9pm. This way you don’t have to buy candy for those thankless brats in your neighborhood. We promise to make all the other Halloween parties you attend look fantastic. We also promise to serve great beer during this event -- that will never change.
