June 22, 2011, Wednesday - Upper Riverfront Parks Development Public Meeting at MPRB

Your favorite summer destination for getting your toes wet may not be the Upper Riverfront in Minneapolis, but visionary plans for river’s edge trails, recovered wetlands, boat landings, tributaries, kayak courses and yes, beaches, will soon put the Mississippi high on your to-experience list.

These, and other regional amenities designed to reconnect the community with the great river and National Park in our midst, are among those the public is asked to weigh in on during the June 22 public meeting. The Minneapolis Park Board is holding the public meeting as part of its Minneapolis Riverfront Development Initiative (MR|DI), a strategic project to develop within five years the first phase of multi-functional community-connecting parks along 5.5 miles of the Mississippi from the Stone Arch Bridge to the city’s northern border.

Landscape architecture and architecture design team, TLS/KVA, is charged with crafting the vision and will be the key presenters on June 22, as well as three other meetings scheduled that week with the MR|DI’s community-based Advisory, Technical and Steering committees. Also presenting will be Mary deLaittre, Project Manager of the MR|DI. The MR|DI’s June meetings are the last in a series of three monthly, multi-day visits by TLS/KVA that began in April and provided an opportunity for community and committee members to have in-person discussions with the design team.

In September, the MR|DI’s deLaittre and TLS/KVA will make the recommendation to the Park Board for the 30-year framework (a long-term vision for multifunctional parks development) and five year implementation plan for the Upper Riverfront, which will include specific parks sites and systems, as well as phasing and funding. Also in September, Park Board Commissioners and the Minneapolis City Council will be asked to vote on the plan. Community members who are unable to attend the meeting are encouraged to participate in a proposal-specific survey that will be available beginning June 22 via www.MinneapolisRiverfrontDevelopmentInitiative.com and at Minneapolis Parks recreation centers. MR|DI is also bringing the table to the community in three ways: meeting with neighborhood, community and civic organizations at their preferred locations and meeting times, implementing a summer-long Youth Ambassador outreach program at community events and hosting an Upper Riverfront photo documentary project.

Walk the Minneapolis riverfront and learn about its dramatic past and bright future. Participants will visit the historic district at St. Anthony Falls, which was once the milling center of the world and is now a growing cultural, recreational and residential neighborhood. A guide from Mill City Museum will lead visitors onto the Stone Arch Bridge for a spectacular view of the falls, the historic buildings surrounding it and downtown Minneapolis and tell stories of the people who have worked and lived in the area and how it has changed over the years. The tour begins and ends at Mill City Museum where participants can visit the museum gallery (included in the price of the tour) and enjoy refreshments at the Mill City Museum Café.

The 2nd Annual Pedal Pub Races is a creation of Northeast Minneapolis Riverfront District.

The race is a bit like a relay - Pedal Pubs will race down University from E Hennepin to 1st Ave, stop, hop off, and mount another Pedal Pub and race back the other direction.

Each team will race two races and possibly a third. The second race will be 1 1/2 to 2 hours after the first race. The third race will determine 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. (Placement based on times.)

Team must be fully registered by race day.

Team requirements include:
~ Must have 8-10 people, 4 must be female.
~ Must be 18 years or older, 21 to drink.
~ First come first serve basis.

June 17, 2011, Friday - The Science of Wheat and Flour, Demonstration & Tasting at Mill City Museum

Times: 10:30am and 11:30am

See how Minneapolis' tradition of high-quality wheat flours, begun in the 19th century, continues today as members of the Grain and Flour Quality Lab of General Mills demonstrate wheat and flour quality testing and explain how different grades of flour affect baking.

At 10:30am - Learn about the variety of ways the Grain Lab tests wheat and flour followed by a baking demonstration that will show how additives and treatments affects breads.

At 11:30am - Discover the role of the Grain Lab in the wheat and flour industry, followed by a baking demonstration featuring samples of breads made with different types of flour.

Both presentations will include time for bread sampling and questions.

The Grain and Flour Quality Lab of General Mills is based at the Riverside Technical Center in Minneapolis. It is the central testing lab for the General Mills Flour Milling Division. Presenters Thorne Seese, Jim Wigand, Kara Hobart and Dave Katzke have nearly 100 years of collective milling and grain-use experience.
