June 16, 2011, Thursday - Midwest Photo Safari "Minneapolis Nights in the Mill District" on the Heritage Trail

This is a seasonal tour from Photo Safari, running April 1 through October 31.

This tour runs Thursday through Sunday, and begins at the Third Avenue Bridge on Historic Main St. It begins by walking parts of the St. Anthony Heritage Trail and practicing early evening light photography. Learn the principles of low light settings on your digital SLR's or the various "scene" mode settings of your digital point and shoot.

This safari begins 45 minutes before local sunset (your tour confirmation will have an exact time).  The Safari runs between 90 minute and 2 1/2 hours.

Fred Martinez, brutally murdered at 16, was one of the youngest hate-crime victims in modern history. This film explores the life and death of a boy with a feminine nature, and the essentially spiritual nature of gender. 

Community Cinema pairs independent films with lively panel discussions featuring local experts and community leaders, and moderated by hosts from tpt. These free screenings are presented in partnership with tpt, MELSA and the Independent Television Service.

This project is funded with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Walk the Minneapolis riverfront and learn about its dramatic past and bright future. Participants will visit the historic district at St. Anthony Falls, which was once the milling center of the world and is now a growing cultural, recreational and residential neighborhood. A guide from Mill City Museum will lead visitors onto the Stone Arch Bridge for a spectacular view of the falls, the historic buildings surrounding it and downtown Minneapolis and tell stories of the people who have worked and lived in the area and how it has changed over the years. The tour begins and ends at Mill City Museum where participants can visit the museum gallery (included in the price of the tour) and enjoy refreshments at the Mill City Museum Café.

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building on a guided tour of the building. A museum interpreter will take visitors into the building’s many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time. Also covered will be how the mill ruin was converted to a museum and office building.

Although many parts of the A mill can be explored on a self-guided basis during a regular museum visit, this is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building, and the only chance to see some of its non-public spaces. The tour includes admission to the museum gallery as well as the Flour Tower show.
