April 18, 2014, Friday - Live Music at Aster Cafe

Time: 9:00pm $7

Location: Aster Cafe, 125 Main Stree SE

Tonight:  Molly Maher & her Disbelievers

Molly Maher has consistently found salvation in music. Whether through listening to her dad play guitar in a church band back in the ’70s or during her victorious battle with breast cancer a few years ago, Maher has found solace and drawn inspiration from songs and the endless worlds found within them. The seasoned St. Paul-based singer/songwriter has crafted a modest but impressive back catalog of soulful, countrified folk music while entertaining live audiences around the Twin Cities for over a decade now—most notably during her celebrated five-year residency at Nye’s with Her Disbelievers, and the adventurous Real-Phonic Radio Hour at the James J. Hill Library.

April 17, 2014, Thursday - THE THREEPENNY OPERA at the Southern Theater (4 nights)

Time: See schedule below

Location: Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Avenue South

Frank Theatre presents THE THREEPENNY OPERA, the groundbreaking 1928 musical theatre piece by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill that paved the way for the modern musical theatre. Featuring a score that includes one of the most widely recorded songs of the 20th century, "Mack The Knife." Set just before the coronation of the Queen, the plot centers on the escapades of the scoundrel Macheath who has swagger, a silver tongue and a way with the ladies. When Macheath marries the respectable and virginal Polly Peachum, the daughter of the merchant J.J. Peachum, a battle ensues, threatening to disrupt the underground economy fueled by Mr. and Mrs. Peachum. A series of betrayals and briberies lead to Macheath's public hanging, interrupted at the last minute by an over-the-top reprieval from the Queen. This satire of the decadence of 1928 Wiemar Germany and capitalist society about to collapse on itself is just as timely, horrifying and outrageously funny as it was upon its premiere.

THREEPENNY features a stellar cast, with Bradley Greenwald as Macheath, Gary Briggle as Mr. Peachum, Janis Hardy as Mrs. Peachum, Vern Sutton as the Street Singer, Molly Sue McDonald as Jenny, Suzie Juul as Polly Peachum, Kira Lace Kawkins as Lucy Brown, Jim Ramlet as Tiger Brown, and Laura Adams, Marisa Asp, Joe Botten, Adara Bryan, Tessa Flynn, Zach Garcia, Shavunda Horsley, Jen Maren, Elisa Pluhar, James Rodriguez and Grant Sorenson in a delightful assemblage of whores, gang members and other salacious characters. THREEPENNY is directed by Wendy Knox, with Musical Direction by Sonja Thompson, Choreography by Wynn Fricke, Set Design by Joe Stanley, Costume Design by Kathy Kohl, Lighting Design by Karin Olson, Sound Design by Sean Healey, Dramaturgy by Steve Matuszak and Stage Managed by Spency Putney.

Time: 5:30pm

Location: Aster Cafe (River Room) 125 SE Main Street

April Sip of Science: Antarctica - the Last Continental Frontier with Dr. John Goodge,  University of Minnesota Duluth

NEW: RSVP for Sip of Science

Antarctica. The coldest, windiest, and driest place in the world. It's one of the world's seven continents, but has no permanent human residents due to its hostile environment. Yet, Antarctica has a wealth of information that continues to inform us about our world and how it works. The continental geology of Antarctica is linked to supercontinent formation, resource distribution, stability of the ice sheets, and climate science. Researchers continue to embrace novel technologies that promise to reveal new secrets from the deep ice - to help us learn about Earth changes on a variety of timescales.

Join us as Dr. John Goodge from the University of Minnesota-Duluth takes us on a tour of this last frontier.  He has led scientific expeditions to Antarctica 11 times, and is currently funded by the National Science Foundation to help design a new drilling platform capable of boring through ice and reaching the deepest buried bedrock below.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Professor Goodge received his BA from Carleton College; MS from the University of Montana; and PhD from UCLA. He was on the faculty at Southern Methodist University from 1988-2001, and has been a faculty member at UMD since 2002. His research interests are in the areas of continental tectonics and the formation of continental crust, and development of collisional and subduction-zone mountain belts. He has active research in the Transantarctic Mountains of Antarctica and the subglacial geology of East Antarctica, including 11 extended field seasons in Antarctica. At UMD, Professor Goodge has been awarded over 2.6 million dollars in research grants from the National Science Foundation, and has successfully secured external funding of more than $700,000 for new laboratory instrumentation and equipment for teaching and research. Dr. Goodge has published numerous peer-reviewed works in international earth science journals and edited books, including over 30 first-authored papers. John was recognized with the Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Research in 2013-14.

Time: 11:00am - 1:00pm, Free

Location: Aster Cafe, 125 Main Stree SE

Today: The Roe Family Singers

The Roe Family Singers are a Good-Time, Old-Time Hillbilly band from the Mississippi-headwaters community of Kirkwood Hollow, MN. Led by wife & husband Kim Roe (Best Female Vocalist, City Pages/Village Voice) and Quillan Roe (Accident Clearinghouse), the band blends characteristic old-time sound with rock & roll urgency and influence.

Joined by as many as seven musicians, and featuring banjo, autoharp, guitar, and washboard, the band and family of fans have been regularly filling Minneapolis’ 331 Club every Monday night since 2005. In 2010 the band opened for both Doc Watson and Del McCoury, each playing at the Cedar Cultural Center; the Grascals at the MBOTMA Winter Bluegrass Weekend; and Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur at the National Jug Band Jubilee in Louisville, KY. In 2011 the band was awarded the prestigious McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians, and has previously won the title of “World’s Best” at the 29th annual Battle of the Jug Bands.

With a mix of original music and contemporary takes on old-time, traditional, and gospel tunes, every performance raises a ruckus.

April 11, 2014, Friday - Live Music at Aster Cafe

Time: 9:00pm $7

Location: Aster Cafe, 125 Main Stree SE

Tonight: Symbol & Surface + Almighty American + We Are The Willows (Pete Miller)

Symbol & Surface Brothers Brian and David Bauernfeind began their songwriting partnership sharing a childhood together, but it did not blossom until they both found themselves leaving home for the Twin Cities to attend college. It was here that their craft matured along with their personal lives, sped up through the addition of Stefan Kuhl (Bass), Matt Decker (drums) and John Nielsen (guitar, vocals/harmonies). Mixing their acoustic roots with a full-band sound and stature, it’s not hard to feel a sense of familiarity with Symbol & Surface. From their all-in-the-family beginnings, to their eventual expansion into a band of best friends, everything about the quintet makes you feel comfortable in all the right ways, yet anticipatory of what may come next.
