May 1, 2014, Thursday - THE THREEPENNY OPERA at the Southern Theater (4 nights)

Show Dates and Times:
Thursday, May 1 @ 8pm
Friday, May 2 @ 8pm
Saturday, May 3 @ 8pm
Sunday, May 4 @ 2pm

Location: Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Avenue South

Frank Theatre presents THE THREEPENNY OPERA, the groundbreaking 1928 musical theatre piece by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill that paved the way for the modern musical theatre. Featuring a score that includes one of the most widely recorded songs of the 20th century, "Mack The Knife." Set just before the coronation of the Queen, the plot centers on the escapades of the scoundrel Macheath who has swagger, a silver tongue and a way with the ladies. When Macheath marries the respectable and virginal Polly Peachum, the daughter of the merchant J.J. Peachum, a battle ensues, threatening to disrupt the underground economy fueled by Mr. and Mrs. Peachum. A series of betrayals and briberies lead to Macheath's public hanging, interrupted at the last minute by an over-the-top reprieval from the Queen. This satire of the decadence of 1928 Wiemar Germany and capitalist society about to collapse on itself is just as timely, horrifying and outrageously funny as it was upon its premiere.

THREEPENNY features a stellar cast, with Bradley Greenwald as Macheath, Gary Briggle as Mr. Peachum, Janis Hardy as Mrs. Peachum, Vern Sutton as the Street Singer, Molly Sue McDonald as Jenny, Suzie Juul as Polly Peachum, Kira Lace Kawkins as Lucy Brown, Jim Ramlet as Tiger Brown, and Laura Adams, Marisa Asp, Joe Botten, Adara Bryan, Tessa Flynn, Zach Garcia, Shavunda Horsley, Jen Maren, Elisa Pluhar, James Rodriguez and Grant Sorenson in a delightful assemblage of whores, gang members and other salacious characters. THREEPENNY is directed by Wendy Knox, with Musical Direction by Sonja Thompson, Choreography by Wynn Fricke, Set Design by Joe Stanley, Costume Design by Kathy Kohl, Lighting Design by Karin Olson, Sound Design by Sean Healey, Dramaturgy by Steve Matuszak and Stage Managed by Spency Putney.

May 1, 2014, Thursday - Milwaukee Avenue: Community Building in Minneapolis, with author Robert Roscoe at Mill City Museum

Time: 7:00pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 2nd Street South

Milwaukee Avenue: Community Building in Minneapolis, with author Robert Roscoe

Fee: Free

Join author Robert Roscoe for an illustrated presentation based on his new book "Milwaukee Avenue: Community Building in Minneapolis." In the 1970s, a politically savvy and hardworking neighborhood organization, the Seward West Project Area Committee, stopped a proposed plan which would have demolished all of the houses on Milwaukee Avenue, houses that are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in the 1880s, many of these houses were the very first homes in Minneapolis. Milwaukee Avenue offers a unique look at how determined citizens saved their neighborhood in a decade that changed history. After his talk Roscoe will sign copies of his book which can be purchased in the Mill City Museum store.

Robert Roscoe has been involved in historic preservation activism and architectural planning for the Seward West neighborhood. He owns Design for Preservation, a residential design practice.

April 30, 2014, Wednesday - Reading and Discussion with Patrick Hicks and Jack El-Hai at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave S

Reading and Discussion with Patrick Hicks and Jack El-Hai

Join us for a reading with Patrick Hicks and Jack El-Hai in honor of National Holocaust Awareness Month. The aim of the event is not only to spotlight these authors, but to think about the role of literature in shaping our understanding of the Holocaust and the responsibilities writers assume when choosing to write and explore such emotionally-charged histories.

Patrick Hicks, author of the novel The Commandant of Lubizec
After the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939, they quickly began persecuting anyone who was Jewish. Millions were shoved into ghettos and forced to live under the swastika. Death camps were built and something called "Operation Reinhard" was set into motion. Its goal? To murder all the Jews of Poland. The Commandant of Lubizec is a harrowing account of a death camp that never actually existed but easily could have in the Nazi state. It is a sensitive, accurate retelling of a place that went about the business of genocide. Told as a historical account in a documentary style, it explores the atmosphere of a death camp. It describes what it was like to watch the trains roll in, and it probes into the mind of its commandant, Hans-Peter Guth. How could he murder thousands of people each day and then go home to laugh with his children? This is not only an unflinching portrayal of the machinery of the gas chambers, it is also the story of how prisoners burned the camp to the ground and fled into the woods. It is a story of rebellion and survival. It is a story of life amid death. With a strong eye towards the history of the Holocaust, The Commandant of Lubizec compels us to look at these extermination centers anew. It disquiets us with the knowledge that similar events actually took place in camps like Belzec, Sobibor, and Treblinka. The history of Lubizec, although a work of fiction, is a chillingly blunt distillation of real life events. It asks that we look again at "Operation Reinhard." It brings voice to the silenced. It demands that we bear witness.

Jack El-Hai, author of the novel The Nazi and the Psychiatrist
The Nazi and the Psychiatrist explores the complex relationship between the American psychiatrist Douglas M. Kelley and his 22 Nazi patients awaiting trial as war criminals in the 1945-46 International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. As Kelley develops an especially close relationship with the former Reichsmarshal Hermann Göring, he launches an investigation of the essence of evil that eventually proves to be the physician’s undoing. Set amid the post-war ruins of Europe, The Nazi and the Psychiatrist is the first book to tap Kelley’s vast collection of personal and professional papers and artifacts from Nuremberg—including medical records of the Nazi defendants—which have been hidden for decades.
