May Happy Hour: The Soo Line Building

Join Preserve Minneapolis for an insider’s tour of downtown’s newest large-scale preservation and rehabilitation project: The Soo Line Building. Tickets are free but space is limited, so you MUST reserve a spot.

Some building background:The 19-story First National Bank‐Soo Line Building once stood as the tallest building in Minneapolis. The classically detailed Second Renaissance Revival building was a collaboration between two Minneapolis companies: The First National Bank and the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Sault Ste. Marie Railway (the Soo Line) and wasbuilt for their corporate offices. Originally designed by architect Robert Gibson, and completed in 1915, the building was stately and grand, incorporating a 3-story open banking hall at the base with ornate detailing and a grand stair at its center oriented toward the main entrance fronting bustling 5th street.

Over the years the building’s interiors underwent numerous modifications, ultimately destroying much of its pristine elegance of the ornate interior plaster cornices and coffered ceilings, infilling the original 3-story lobby to a modest 2-story space, eliminating much of the historic fabric and replacing and reorienting the grand stair.

May 18, 2014, Sunday - Dandelion Day at Ard Godfrey House

Location: Ard Godfrey House, Chute Park (across from Lund's)

Dandelion Day

The annual Dandelion Day celebration features face painting, dandelion necklaces, tours of the historic house with costumed guides, free recipe booklets and Godfrey House buttons for the kids.

The Ard Godfrey House is the oldest wood frame house existing in Minneapolis. This Greek Revival-style home was built by millwright Ard Godfrey in 1848, near the corner of Main Street and Second Avenue SE. The house was moved several times before arriving in Chute Square Park in 1909. Ard Godfrey helped build the first dam and sawmill which put the waterfall of St. Anthony to use in 1848. He was also the first Postmaster in the village of St. Anthony. His wife is credited with bringing dandelions to Minnesota, as she did import dandelion seeds from Maine, which would be useful in her recipes for such things as Dandelion Bread and Dandelion Tea.

The house will be open Saturdays and Sundays in June, July and August, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Visit http://www.ardgodfreyhouse.org/ or call 612-813-5300 for more information.

An interview-based artist project by Minnesota artist Jan Estep

An experiment in presence and connection, Conversation Portraits: For the One Who… is a relational performance piece in which the artist interviews participants and writes impromptu text poems about their lives using a 1960s Royal manual typewriter. There are eight events scheduled during the Soap Factory’s 2014 season, staggered between April and October. A collection of the texts based on the interviews will be published at the end of the series.
