October 23, 2014, Thursday - Water Works Public Open House at Mill City Museum

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 2nd Street South

Time: 6:00pm-7:30pm

Water Works Park Vision Presentation and Public Open House

It’s been more than 50 years since the Mississippi River thundered through the 34-ft deep and 50-ft wide “great canal,” a feat of engineering that made Minneapolis the world’s milling powerhouse over 100 years ago. Now in the 21st century, the Minneapolis Parks Foundation (MPF) has underwritten the creation of a new vision for excavating and experiencing the historic canal, the prominent feature in an experiential future Water Works park.

MPF will present the Water Works design, developed through a 13-month collaborative process, to Commissioners as a study item at the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board’s regular meeting, Wednesday, October 22.

MPF and the Park Board invite the public to see the Water Works design and meet the designers on Thursday, October 23, when MPF also will officially debut a 3D flythrough animation of the future park. Water Works is a Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board-owned site located on the Mississippi River adjacent to its only true waterfall – St. Anthony Falls. It is also on the edge of downtown Minneapolis within both a growing mixed-use neighborhood and the St. Anthony Falls Heritage District. The area has long been significant to First Nations, and, because of its milling past, has several important historic features.

For more information on these presentations: http://mplsparksfoundation.org/2014/10/14/mpf-to-present-vision-for-water-works-park-to-minneapolis-park-recreation-board-october-22/.

For more on the Water Works park process and to subscribe to news about the project, please visit http://mplsparksfoundation.org/category/projects/water-works.

Major funding for the Water Works design project is provided by Pentair Foundation, St. Anthony Falls Heritage Board and General Mills Foundation. Additional support is provided by The Jay & Rose Phillips Family Foundation and many generous individuals.

October 18, 2014, Saturday - Rock the Lock! - Saint Anthony Falls Paddlefest Hosted by Above the Falls Sports - CANCELED

UPDATE VIA FACEBOOK 10/7/14:

NOTICE: Rock the Lock is regretfully being postponed.
Unfortunately, due to some permitting constraints and their associated time sensitivity we are being forced to postpone Rock the Lock. Also, being that Minnesota turns into an icy and lifeless abyss around this time of year, we have to postpone this event until the spring instead of just pushing it back a few weeks. Good news: word on the street is that the lock may not be officially closing until June, so we still have time! Also, moving it to the spring gives us a chance to celebrate the Mississippi, the Upper Saint Anthony lock, AND the end of winter! Thank you to anyone who has and will continue to support this awesome event, and we hope to see you in the spring!!!

Time:  1:00pm - 7:00pm

Location: Muse Event Center,  107 3rd Ave N

Rock the Lock! - Saint Anthony Falls Paddlefest Hosted by Above the Falls Sports

Rock the Lock is a day of fun and adventure to celebrate Minneapolis, St. Anthony Falls, and the Mississippi while raising money for youth outdoor recreation. Hoping to "Rock the Lock", EVERYONE IS WELCOME to join us in PADDLING THE UPPER ST. ANTHONY LOCK for the LAST time! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be the last paddlers through the 75-foot lock before its complete closure to ALL boat traffic. After this urban paddling adventure, it's back to Muse to kick off a concert where there will be plenty of fun, food and drink, information, and ROCK N' ROLL!!

We have a passion for outdoor recreation and believe in the importance of providing outdoor recreation opportunities for youth. To help make a difference for youth in our community, all of the proceeds from this event are being donated to local organizations dedicated to getting youth outdoors and active. Along with raising money for our community, it's also incredibly important to recognize the historic significance of the Upper St. Anthony Lock. This event is the last chance to experience first-hand, the rich history and many opportunities the Upper Lock and Mississippi have given to Minneapolis. Don't miss out on this incredible (and incredibly fun) opportunity!

October 17, 2014, Friday - "Can We Harvest Rainwater for Indoor Use?" at McKnight Foundation

Time:  8:00am – 9:30am

Location: McKnight Foundation, 710 Second Street South, Suite 400

"Can We Harvest Rainwater for Indoor Use?"

As green infrastructure receives greater attention for its potential to help communities protect water resources, so do rainwater capture and re-use opportunities. Here in Minnesota, a common perception is that state laws prohibit harvest and re-use of stormwater for indoor uses like toilet flushing—but is this just a myth? Why, truly, don’t we see more projects harvest rainwater for indoor use, especially as we deepen our understanding of the need to reduce demand on our limited water resources? The answer is part governance, part economics and part persistence. Saint Paul’s Lowertown Regional Ballpark (currently under construction and will be home to the St. Paul Saints) will harvest rainwater for indoor use—Minnesota’s first such municipal project. Come hear how this project navigated regulatory issues, why the City of Saint Paul sees it as an important opportunity to demonstrate sustainable water management and how others can apply lessons learned from this project.

The topic is particularly timely, given that the MN Plumbing Board is updating the Plumbing Code—and is considering the recommendations of an interagency Water Reuse Group on rainwater harvesting. Speaker Wes Saunders-Pearce is the City of Saint Paul’s Water Resources Coordinator and was instrumental in incorporating a rainwater harvesting program at the Lowertown Regional Ballpark. Note: Our hosts at the McKnight Foundation have a new check-in process. When you arrive, please be prepared to sign in at the front desk and get a visitor pass.

Light breakfast provided. Free. RSVP to lark_weller@nps.gov.
